That sort of "vanilla-rap" thing. Tuneless, boring and dubious 'attitude'. My son likes it alot. He's 10. How can I avoid it? Perhaps its a phase ??

tell him you love it , learn the words and do an embarrassing mum rap when his friends come round!

AgentZigzag · 11/03/2012 11:19

Turn your own music up enough to drown it out?

That'll educate him at the same time by exposing him to some decent music Smile

ImperialBlether · 11/03/2012 11:21

Buy him some headphones.

Would you really expect to like the same music as a ten year old? Lovely if you share similar tastes, but not the end of the world if you don't!

AlbertoFrog · 11/03/2012 11:21

My mum said much the same about my love for Whitesnake Blush

catgirl1976 · 11/03/2012 11:30

Could be worse. Could be Justin Bieber

I don't think you are meant to like the same music as your children though

Draw up a bingo sheet for when you start saying "It's just noise" and "They won't be around in 20 years time like xxx" etc Grin

YANBU
It is your duty as a parent to hate adolescent music, clothes and speech. Your role is to ensure sufficient differences for hm to kick off into independence without actually becoming a thug.

uruculager · 11/03/2012 11:37

Can you give us some examples of what you mean by vanilla rap?

I heard a song called "Rack City" yesterday that is apparently quite popular. It was appalling.

Kennyp · 11/03/2012 11:41

I hate music which is just noise and not proper lyrics/musical ability of some sort. Dd loves that earthquake song. I still like billy joel.

Mandy2003 · 11/03/2012 11:57

Just be grateful that it is not DubStep. That is truly vile IMO.

My Dad hated the Rolling Stones and the Beatles back in 'my' day. I, on the other hand, loved it when my son plays Darude, especially Sandstorm. Jigs around to it I does!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/03/2012 14:48

That's the way it's meant to be, surely? There's no point in listening to music that your parents like.

Not quite sure how mine are going to rebel, as their dad already listens to music that is "just noise". Justin Bieber would be the ultimate rebellion, I suppose.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 11/03/2012 14:53

My mother loathed my Status Quo albums played at full volume (looking back now she probably had a point :). My Dad on the other handonce borrowed one though to play at a school assembly....

When a teengager my son liked awful stuff lke Marilyn Manson and other incomprensible rubbish from filthy unwashed louts you could smell through the radio/MTV/cd. Move on a few years and I hear Pink Floyd coming from his rooom....

bobbledunk · 11/03/2012 15:52

How embarrassing to have a wannabe Ali G in the house and have to endure the noise torture of bad music on top of that.

Buy him some headphones while you consider whether to put him up for adoption...Grin

MardyBra · 11/03/2012 15:54

Yes but you're a young mother Stranded. You're still the younger generation.

GavisconJunkie · 11/03/2012 16:14

Mandy what's wrong with dubstep!?

There's a family up the road from me (I live in Somerset btw) who treat Glastonbury festivL as an annual pilgrimage. The whole tribe goes, they've got 4 kids. The mother is in pieces because the 13 year old is a bieber fan!

Nagoo · 11/03/2012 16:34

The only thing you can do is expose him to the good stuff at every opportunity.

What is your preferred genre OP? :)

blonderthanred · 11/03/2012 16:37

I loves the dubstep and I ain't no young'un.

Vanilla rap sounds a bit dubious though.

janelikesjam · 11/03/2012 16:43

"How embarrassing to have a wannabe Ali G in the house and have to endure the noise torture of bad music on top of that. Buy him some headphones while you consider whether to put him up for adoption..." Yes, Bobbledunk that is exactly how I felt ... mind you I had just woken up on Sunday morning, that silly sound and video set me off a bit Shock.

Nagoo I like everything really - rock, folk, disco, easy listening Smile, some old punk, 60s, 70s, 90s, soul, house, dance, reggae, even the odd bit of decent rap and Justin Bieber I can cope with. But the silly-rap-posturing Ali-G sytle really gets on my nerves.

But I will survive (Gloria Gaynor, disco heyday).
