To think he should sing the anthem...

Watching the start of the rugby and all players are singing their little hearts out, apart from Toby Faletau.

I appreciate hes not Welsh but has lived there from age 7 and does play for a Welsh club side as well as the National team

So, AIBU to think that if u choose to play for a Country other than ur own then u should learn the Anthem

or should I shut up and enjoy the game?

I agree!

lumpymash · 10/03/2012 14:59

I've always noticed quite a few don't seem to sing it. But Warren Gatland doesn't know it either which really annoys me.

RuleBritannia · 10/03/2012 14:59

Yes, whatever country you play for (and it should be your own) you should learn the national anthem and show it by singing it at an event.

ConferencePear · 10/03/2012 15:01

Who pays his wages ?

vodkanredbull · 10/03/2012 15:07

I think it should go back to the old rule, none of this 'you can play if you've lived here for 5 years'

There's always been players that don't sing.

If he has lived in wales since the age of 7 then he will probably know the anthem. IME its sung quite a lot in schools (Eisteddfod etc).

Birdsgottafly · 10/03/2012 15:17

I don't agree, different sport, but knowing a few footballers personally, i can understand why they don't sing the National Anthem.

They owe nothing to the Queen and if they hadn't of been able to play football then they would be rotting on a council estate having been let down by the education system, with little employment to look forward to.

TheFallenMadonna · 10/03/2012 15:20

I am British, but republican. I struggle with our national anthem. I would prefer to just year the music, rather than sung the words.

EdithWeston · 10/03/2012 15:20

If you accept an offer to represent your country, then I think you should be ready to participate properly in the full public role which includes anthems.

TheFallenMadonna · 10/03/2012 15:20

Sing.

finnbarr · 10/03/2012 15:21

Should sing the anthem!!! YADNBU!!!

finnbarr · 10/03/2012 15:22

Mind you, I also think that England should sing Jerusalem...

TheFallenMadonna · 10/03/2012 15:22

Which isn't relevant here of course!

lumpymash · 10/03/2012 15:39

The Welsh national anthem has no mention of the Queen/royalty.
It's much more warriors/beautiful land of our Fathers/blood etc.

AND ON THAT NOTE ROBERTS GETS A TRY!!!!

Tricycletops · 10/03/2012 15:40

Maybe he just can't sing? Andy Powell never sings either and I'm sure there are others...

lumpymash · 10/03/2012 15:41

Sorry! Blush

[Over excited Welsh woman smiley]

TheFallenMadonna · 10/03/2012 15:58

I know. That's why I said my objection to singing the British national anthem was irrelevant.

TheFallenMadonna · 10/03/2012 15:59

Perhaps it is indeed that it isn't the land of his fathers?

lumpymash · 10/03/2012 16:13

Sorry Madonna that was to Birsdgottafly comment.

MummytoKatie · 10/03/2012 17:05

My husband doesn't know the Welsh national anthem and he lived in Wales from birth until he went to university. And he represented Wales at a sport at a junior level. We have the Inlaws staying who have between them live in Wales for 130 years and between them they managed to cobble the first 3 lines together and then got stuck.

I din't know the words to Jeruselem either.

TidyDancer · 10/03/2012 17:21

YABU. I don't think you need to learn an anthem to be proud of your country.

SuchProspects · 10/03/2012 18:19

I think it's quite rude for someone to sing an anthem that isn't their own country"s. I don't think countries should have players who aren't citizens on their national teams though. So Y and Wales ABU. Grin

thegreylady · 10/03/2012 18:22

I thought everyone knew the words to Jerusalem!

ZZZenAgain · 10/03/2012 18:25

well he is a rugby player not a singer in the end so maybe he is self-conscious, knows he is tone deaf and hates singing anything in public. Doesn't have to be a direct rebuff of the Welsh national anthem
