I sent a message to a seller asking why their postage is so high?
The item they are selling starts at 99p but postage 2nd class is a ridiculous £7.50 and i know for a fact that even if they sent it recorded it would only be £3.

They mailed me bavk saying 'well item is very cheap dont you think?'

Well yes item is very cheap but i wont bid on it because postage is ridiculous (unless i get it for 99p).

Is this nirmal for People to completely take the piss over postage?

£7.50 is unreasonable but as you know this in advance then don't bid. Alternatively you could make her an offer which includes postage.

Ebay sellers often do this to avoid fees or cover the cost of fees.

I've fallen out big time with ebay anyway, bunch of theiving two faced tossers. Angry Some of their policies leave a lot to be desired.

SleepyFergus · 10/03/2012 18:27

YANBU - this what ruins eBay, and to be honest if someone was blatantly taking the piss with the p&p charges, I would doubt their credentials as a decent and honest seller full stop. They are avoiding fees yet taking advantage of the Market place that eBay provides.

mosschops30 · 10/03/2012 18:48

Yes i know its not just the actual postage but i sent a pair of mens trainers this week, in box, paid for postage bag, sent recorded, cost £6.66.

Seller is in London so i imagine they have a post office within 10 miles Hmm

i just find it a bit dishonest.

All her items are with exhorbitant postage £5+ so i suspect she starts everything at 99p thereby avoiding list fees but secures price she wants with postage

Fee avoidance is against ebay's rules.

If they break one rule so blatantly I wonder what other rules they are happy to break. If something goes wrong with the transaction are they likely deal with it professionally?

TotemPole · 10/03/2012 18:57

Oops, SleepyFergus' didn't see your post. Yes, what you said. Grin

GavisconJunkie · 10/03/2012 19:21

Well, if it's worth it (the total value) then how does it affect you? eBay do charge increasingly extortionate fees for final value and this is a seller's way of avoiding it. I think it's a bit cheeky, but all buyers can and will take this into account.

It works the other way too. As a way of combating this, eBay have introduced maz P&P in some categories, like DVDs. £1 I think. Bit of a pain in the arse when you're selling a massive boxed set I have to say.

If this is a big enough worry in your life that it made you start a MN thread, you are a very, very lucky woman. Congratulations.

Jeez Gaviscon, take a Gaviscon.....! That was a bit harsh. Firstly, the OP was just asking for an opinion. Secondly, I personally don't think eBay fees are that bad. You make money on things that ordinarily you would have chucked out or sent to the charity shops. And in some cases, people make a decent whack on items that might have been difficult to sell in other areas. The market place that eBay provides is massive, and that's why people choose to sell here. You can make some savings by choosing to start bids at 99p (therefore no listing fee) or by waiting and listing on a free listing weekend.

What some sellers take offence to is sellers that take the mick charging ridiculous p&p charges when others are being honest and playing by the rules.

mosschops30 · 10/03/2012 20:29

gaviscon

If every post on MN was 'the main worry in their life' then it would be a very depressing forum.
Sure there are lots of sad, life changing threads on here but AIBU is not the place For those which is why i posted my very minor annoyance. HTH!

YANBU at all.

It annoys me too.

One lady whose listings I looked at was charging £4 p&p for each individual t-shirt.

Used t-shirts that would end up costing a minimum of £4.99!

Greedy, greedy woman.

DamnBamboo · 10/03/2012 20:34

Gaviscons you need to calm down.

OP just having a moan, it's allowed.

sarahtigh · 10/03/2012 20:35

max charge for second class is £3.15 so add on a bit for packing max £4 does not say recorded

sells for 99p cost 0 to insert if had listed at 4.99 would have cost 15p to insert well worth the 15p to get 4.99

yes ebay take 10% and paypal 3.4 %

but unless you sell no gum tree everywhere else charges auction houses generally charge 18% plus VAT

OP yes their postal charges are outrageous and its perfectly in order to leave low DSR and negative in such a case; ebay does not ask did you pay what they quoted for postage it asks was the postage reasonably, often buyer does not know weight so difficult to know if reasonable until arrives with £1.72 on label and £4 on your bill then you know its unreasonable if it cost £3.15 on label £4 is perfectly ok

you may sell elsewhere for free but unlikely to get such high price,

I run ebay business and fees are ok ( i do pay tax for the suspicious) and for business sellers it costs 10p to list at 99p

overcharging for postage is silly as will get you low DSR then restrictions in selling all for sake of saving 15p to list at right price

GavisconJunkie · 10/03/2012 20:49

Meh

Nevertooearlyforcake · 10/03/2012 22:18

I do a little bit of selling on EBay and quite a lot of buying. I think you have to take so much on trust (description etc) and when I see postage charges like that it makes me feel less comfortable about the seller so I don't bid even through my base line is obviously the total cost. I'm currently bidding for a top with postage £3.99, if it were any more than that I wouldn't bother.
