To think "fuck off Eco lunch box"?

I mean the standard lunch box food police is bad enough. Not allowed xyz in pack up.

But for the next two weeks we have to have no packaging waste in the lunch box either. So nothing in individual wrappers, sandwich bags, etc. Ater the two weeks experiment is up apparently it's fine to using as many cheap plastic bags, bits of cling film as you can cram in the box. Hmm

Do the school really thing I'm going to bung sandwiches, cucumber, pepper strips, satay and illegal cake in one Tupperware box with no method of wrapping them?

Dd came home today with no empty sandwich bags which is unusual. Apparently the kids with rubbish at the end of lunch have to put their rubbish in a big bag so at the end of the trial they can see how much they're damaging the world.

Can you not just opt for school dinners?

southeastastra · 09/03/2012 23:35

you could argue that you re use the packaging and miss them being bought home

Anniegetyourgun · 09/03/2012 23:36

Is that the same bin bag in which they put all the broken bits of food and the bits they couldn't eat because they were all squashed together with quite different bits of food, or a different one? And does this wasted food count as world damage?

VivaLeBeaver · 09/03/2012 23:37

She fi ishes primary school in July and will be having school dinners at secondary. Thank the lord. So I'm not buying new lunch boxes now, that would be even more environmentally unfriendly. Ditto those reusable sandwich wrap things.

Anyway there was no notice. So no time to plan.

WorraLiberty · 09/03/2012 23:37

What southeast said

That's taking the piss

I normally support these things as much as possible but that's just daft to take your wrapping away so you have to use more the next day.

Anyway, what's wrong with the school asking the food be wrapped in paper bags?

Sandalwood · 09/03/2012 23:38

What about wrapping you can reuse/recycle like tin foil?
Or those wrap-n-mat things.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/03/2012 23:39

They usually have to bring uneaten food home, mainly to save the schools rubbish collection bill but also so parents know what kids are eating.

But this week, there are three bags. One for waste rubbish, one for recylable stuff and one or food.

Hope they've ordered an extra bin lorry!

See, I'd argue that nude lunchboxes are JUST as damaging as wrapped food as they cause food waste age

Our school went nude lunches and my kids dutifully unwrapped all their food and placed it in 100,000 different containers. The fodd that didn't get eaten was brought home, and within a day or so was spoiled - whereas I can send the same wrappered museli bar to school for a week until it get eaten. Then there was the cost of buying and supplying said 100,000 containers, and washing them and replacing them several times over as they invariably get lost/stolen or cracked.

I now send wrappered food if it comes wrapped, I put food in containers if it doesn't come wrapped and simply instruct my kids to bring all their rubbish home.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/03/2012 23:40

My mum used to wash and recycle plastic sandwich bags. Would be reused for the next days sandwich.

PrisonerOfWaugh · 09/03/2012 23:41

Can't you even use recyclable (or compostable at a push) packaging - small tubs, foil, greaseproof or kitchen towels etc?

Anniegetyourgun · 09/03/2012 23:41

Oh god, I was joking about the food. That's quite depressing.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/03/2012 23:43

I'd have to Sellotape paper towels round the sandwich. Plus cucumber and pepper would make it soggy.

We can't recycle foil here.

Maybe greaseproof paper would work. If I had any in the house.

I'm a teacher, do these headcases have nothing better to worry about, like actually teaching the kids!!!

DamnBamboo · 09/03/2012 23:48

What is the problem?

I'm not sure what you're complaining about?

Do you not have little tupperware things for leftovers that you would otherwise be using at home?

Here is an example of my sons lunchbox:

-sandwich in recyclable plastic box; can reuse many times, cheaper than clingfilm

-crudites in a tiny reusalb recyclable box, can buy about 6 in major supermarkets for but a few pounds; again has saved loads in clingfilm.

-piece of fruit

-juice box (tetrapak so separate issue) but if this is not alllowed, and it seems like it may not be, then perhaps refillable plastic drinks container

-biscuit or some other baked good in the sandwich box.

This is not hard to do.

It's what I do every day.

No, haven't got any little Tupperware boxes at all.

And to be honest sticking them all in the dishwasher every night would probably be worse for the environment than bags. Plus I don't get in from work till 10pm at night so don't want to be setting the dishwasher at that time.

OP posts:
DamnBamboo · 09/03/2012 23:57

You don't always have to stick them in the dishwasher though viva.
If you've just had cherry toms in it, or even sliced peppers, a tiny drop of washig up liquid with a small squirt of water will do.

It's really not hard to do, I couldn't imagine using clingfilm anymore because of my tubs. I've saved a bit of cash and there is so much less waste.

I'm not being a preachy green (as opposed to peachy keen Grin) but it does help and it really doesn't require any extra effort.

Give it a go!

A pedant writes: 10pm means 10 at night. You wouldn't say 10am at night, or 10pm in the morning, would you? At least I hope you wouldn't.

DamnBamboo · 09/03/2012 23:58

And Rhinos method is good too

VivaLeBeaver · 10/03/2012 00:01

Sorry Annie, you're right. I'm tired after eight hours on my feet with no break today.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 10/03/2012 00:03

Still not convinced about little boxes. Currently use one big Tupperware box which goes in lunch bag. Box and water bottle just fit in the lunch bag. There wouldn't be space for little boxes in the big box. There's no space in the bag for more boxes.

tethersend · 10/03/2012 00:04

It's time to send in soup.

Poured straight into the lunchbox.

Within 24 hours, they'll be handing sandwich bags out at the gates.

TheCrackFox · 10/03/2012 00:05

YANBU

Schools should concentrate on teaching and leave the parenting to the parents. Unless one of the teachers actually want to make my DC's packed lunch they can keep their beak out.
