bobscratchit · 09/03/2012 12:07

Im needing some help or info, for the last few weeks/months i have been having crazy dreams, wake up every hour or so, fall back asleep and either go back to the same dream or a totally different one. I wake up either upset or angry by what ever has happened and generally babble about it to DP. I Just want to sleep without constant dreams, i really cant cope with it.

Anybody have any experience with something similar??

I had bonkers dreams the first few weeks on sertraline - are you on any meds?

bobscratchit · 09/03/2012 12:10

not on any meds, I have always dreamed all the time and been able to remember them, but its not really effected my sleep since i was a kid and had lots of nightmares.

Yes, all my life. My mother and sister are the same. I havent been able to stop it but relaxing bedtime routines (like lavender baths, a tidy bedroom painted in soft colours and clean sheets) does help.

If it continues, see your doc. Might be anxiety.

AllTheSevens · 09/03/2012 12:12

I have this too. I am on AD's at the moment but I have always been a vivid dreamer. It's bloody exhausting!

Afraid I don't have any solutions but just wanted to say you're not alone.

AllTheSevens · 09/03/2012 12:13

Also I wake up and have lingering feelings from the dreams which is strange.

I can remember vividly dreams I had aged 4/5 yo too.

bobscratchit · 09/03/2012 12:15

interesting

I do find it hard to wind down, and i have to have noise to sleep with, thinking about getting a white noise machine as i generally fall asleep with the tv on, and DP turns it off, sometimes he forgets and i weave what ever is on into my dream

But i cant sleep in silence. Its really effecting me know, have always dreamed but it seems to have stepped up a gear in the last few months.

I have lingering feelings from the dreams and cant shake them off for hours, if i was on meds at least that may explain it, :(

I am a big dreamer and have been all my life. My day totally depends on how well I slept and what I dreamed the night before. I often have dreams that linger along with the feelings too which can be horrible to shake off. And YY to remember dreams from childhood. I spoke to my sister about it and apparently she is the same.

I tried not watching telly a few years back to see if that helped but I got worse! Grin

sassymcnassy · 09/03/2012 12:19

if you sleep without dreams you don't feel rested when you wake up. REM sleep and dreaming is an essential part of sleep.

CreamolaFoamless · 09/03/2012 12:20

your dreams are trying to tell/show you something

take 10 mins tomorrow and write down everything you remember from the dream..then close it at don't look at for at least 24 hours

Whatever has been bothering you will be acknowleged and your sleep/dreams will become calmer

AllTheSevens · 09/03/2012 12:20

Sassy, but surely most people don't dream constantly all night?

I read somewhere that if you dream lots you miss the deeper, restful periods of the sleep cycle.

PoultryInMotion · 09/03/2012 12:23

Are you stressed at the minute? I tend to have very vivid dreams when I'm worried about something. It's awful, I sympathise.

sassymcnassy · 09/03/2012 12:29

the deeper restful periods of sleep are the dreaming parts. But they are interspersed with periods of non-rem sleep. OP won't actually be constantly in REM sleep, even though it may feel that way.

I was answering OP's point of wanting sleep with no dreams at all...you don't want that, since it will feel like you haven't slept at all!
Its the vividness of the dreams thats the issue, that can be affected by lots of things .

bobscratchit · 09/03/2012 12:29

Well at the moment, i am about to put my house on the market, Once my tenants are out of it and i am getting married at the end of the year. But not really stressed about all of that.......well i didnt think i was.

I dream all the time too. I have nightmares at the mo but that's the meds.

I find I dream more vivid and anxious dreams if I am too warm. Try and turn the heating down, open a window, remove a duvet etc.
Good luck. I feel for you.

ArtVandelay · 09/03/2012 12:42

I have insane dreams and I know what you mean - sometimes I feel like I've been awake all night and not got my rest properly. I'm having a psychotherapy session every couple of weeks at the moment and the Dr has made big inroads by analysing my dreams. I am convinced they mean something and are evidence of maybe not even stress, but yearnings / urges / things that your subconsious are dealing with. I've learned to not panic about the content because the 'face' dream/story is not the actual meaning anyway. I was a bit cynical when he started with it but I feel more secure now - less worried about why my brain is doing this stuff :)

Last week when I was doing hard construction work all week, I slept without dreams, just like I blacked out for 8-9 hours. It was almost as disturbing as the lurid dreams! Maybe upping your exercise levels could bring you a deeper sleep? I think all the advice about preparing your sleeping room and going to bed is really good.

BitchyNoMore · 09/03/2012 12:43

So when the dreaming means you don't sleep properly? then what. So many dreams recently and constantly feel drained. It is a nightmare. So tired. the only meds i am on atm is paracetmol. And surely that won't have an impact on the dream phase. It is a nightmare. literally.

OP you have my sympathies. No solution I am afraid but my sympathy.

bobscratchit · 09/03/2012 15:30

thanks for that.

I have just been driving all week for work, so upping the exercise levels are probably a good thing regardless. will see how it works.

Also my room is roasting, and i sleep next to a "human radiator".So will turn the heat down on the actual radiator and see how it goes.

I know exactly how you feel .
I too have weird odd strange horrible dreams and always have done....some are nitemares! Sad
I'm not on medication, don't really drink, sometimes I can be stressed with work/money but aren't a lot of people!
I do have reoccurring dreams which I hate as they r always about my xh coming back into my life and me not being able to tell him to leave Sad
I will wake up a few times during the night because of horrible dreams then when my alarm goes off at 7 I feel exhausted.
I said to a work colleague just last week I rush I could go and see sometime who can stop the weird horrible dreams!!

Dee03 · 09/03/2012 21:00

Wish....not rush....bloody phone!!

HalfPastWine · 09/03/2012 21:02

I'm exactly the same as Dee03 but I actually like the crazy dreams and nightmares too! They fascinate me.

A friend of mine hardly ever dreams or probably does but doesn't remember them, which I would find weird.

Dee03 · 09/03/2012 21:44

I always remember parts of the dreams...usually the horrible weird things.
I don't mind the weird sexual dreams I have of celebs Grin.. Even if I don't really like them....it's the ones with people I know...or used to know...
I had an awful dream last week about my grandparents....only the 2nd dream I've had of my grandad...and it was just awful...I was nearly in tears when I woke up and I can still remember certain parts of it....why the hell did I dream that....i used to think that if people who r no longer with us appear in our dreams they r visiting us...but if that's true y was this dream so horrible! It was in no way comforting Sad

ItWasABoojum · 09/03/2012 21:56

Have you thought about exploring lucid dreaming? Not tried it myself but some people seem to have success with it - you can learn to influence your dreams without waking up, which might help you feel less anxious.
