to wonder what my next door neighbours are doing?

They bought the house before christmas, they haven't moved in but spend a couple of hours there every evening and then go, sometimes they stay there at weekends. There are several cars and vans parked on the driveway and down the road, always the same ones. There has been a massive 4x4 the last couple of evenings on the driveway.
The house is only about 10 years old and the lady that lived there before was very clean and tidy so I can't imagine it's so bad they can't move in for 3 months.
It seems a bit dodgy to me, if you see them outside they don't say hello or make eye contact at all.

What do you think they are doing?

My thinking is its a brothel or maybe a mafia hideout Grin I got new neighbours recently and the previous owner had it all decorated new bathroom before they moved , but i heard commotions late at night people coming and going , I too was wondering what can they be doing , Im sure they were just redeocarating , although we live in flats and they kept going in and out the back door at 1 am , was fustrating ,

LydiaWickham · 09/03/2012 09:35

they keep moving your wheelie bins? Oh, now this is interesting now, the bastards, start making a log... Grin

It could be that they are moving to the area with work, but not yet.
It could be they are waiting until the school summer holidays to move their DCs into a new school.
It could be they aren't married yet and are of a religious background that they can't live together before marriage (although the odd weekend to 'do up the house' would be overlooked, as most of my 'no sex before marriage' friends managed).
It could be that while it's only 10 years old there could be major problems like wiring/pipework that if needs doing requires everything else being pulled out, regardless of how nice the finishes are.
If could be they are renting currently and are between the two houses until their tenancy runs out (a friend got caught out with this, she thought her landlord would be nice and let her out with a months notice, he didn't, she had to pay for both properties for 4 months - ouch!)
It could be that it's a safe house of some sort. Do any of the men coming and going from the house look muscular with bad military hair dos?

Marjoriew · 09/03/2012 09:38

Maybe they bought/rented the house to get their kids into a school nearby?

AmazingBouncingFerret · 09/03/2012 09:45

OP Do your neighbours look like this

If so you would be right to be so concerned.

LydiaWickham · 09/03/2012 09:45

Oh, I thought of another one:
It could be that they have bought it as a buy to let, so are just getting it 'rental ready' (ie. painting it all magnolia) and then will be renting it out.

Mrsjay · 09/03/2012 09:49

are they dumping rubbish in your bins ? or is maybe your bins ontop of some sort of pipe maybe they have plumbing problems , ( i have no idea what im talking about )

AnEcumenicalMatter · 09/03/2012 09:58

If they bought it, it's not a dope farm and highly unlikely to be a brothel. These are nearly always rented properties, paid in cash (usually several months upfront) so that they can move on at a moments notice if they think they're at risk of being busted.

Probably just don't have to be out of their current house in a hurry and are decorating. We bought our house and then didn't move in for 11 months because work needed done. It took several months to get all the quotes, tradespeople lined up etc do the work didn't even get under way immediately but we were in and out all the time doing bits and pieces - measuring up, planning, letting trades in for reports/quotes etc.

MidnightWorry · 09/03/2012 10:07

it isnt likely to be a weed factory if its a nonrental- imagine how much trouble you would get into if caught?

Id just go and introduce myself and say i dont see much of you and see what they say

BlaiddDrwg · 09/03/2012 10:38

My neighbours bought the house next door two years ago and still haven't moved in. The only piece of furniture they have taken in is a bed and they have never opened any of the curtains.

Idocrazythings · 09/03/2012 11:29

Pretending they live there to get their kids into a good school and to have a good Dr???? Stupid boundary rules :-/

gallifrey · 09/03/2012 14:14

I had a look in the windows earlier, it's just full of decorating stuff, how bloody disappointing :(

OP posts:
bobbledunk · 09/03/2012 15:05

Peering through your neighbours windows? What a weirdo you are. They're not disturbing or harassing you or others so it's none of your business.

yabu, slightly deranged and desperately in need of a life.

takingiteasy · 09/03/2012 15:11

Sex den?

SarahStratton · 09/03/2012 15:12

I'd want to know what's going on too. Neighbour tip-offs are a good source of info for the police, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being civic-minded.

DuchessofMalfi · 09/03/2012 15:26

I could say something similar about the house opposite us. It's empty, and has been for months now. The only light is one on the landing, which is left on all the time - day and night. No-one lives there anymore - it isn't up for sale or rent - it just looks like it has been abandoned. The curtains are drawn across, and blinds pulled down partially, but you can still see that there's furniture in there, so it hasn't been emptied. I can't help wondering what happened to the couple who used to live there. They kept themselves to themselves, but were very nice people with grown-up children. Strange. I've no idea where they went to, and whether they mean to sell it. Just a bit odd to walk away, seemingly.

Hebiegebies · 09/03/2012 15:31

Houses and flats that have been turned into dope factories must have had suspicious behaviour from the 'occupants'.

If it wasn't for 'nosey neighbours' they might still be. Rather than give the OP a hard time shoud we not be congratulating her on finding out if the place is full of Paint or plants before she phones the police?

DressDownFriday · 09/03/2012 15:36

Cannabis factory. I'd check your leccy meter pronto.

gallifrey · 09/03/2012 15:45

bobbledunk

thanks for your input, it was supposed to be a light hearted conversation. Try getting a sense of humour!

OP posts:
gallifrey · 09/03/2012 15:49

There is a step ladder in the upstairs front room that can be clearly seen from the road, and the downstairs toilet has a frosted window but you can clearly see decorating stuff on the window sill.

OP posts:
SarahStratton · 09/03/2012 15:54

I think yesterday's solar flare burnt all the humour out of MN :(

gallifrey · 09/03/2012 15:55

I think you're right!

OP posts:
Eglu · 09/03/2012 15:58

Some people on here really need to get sense of humour.

Most disappointed it is just decorating. Grin

Quenelle · 09/03/2012 16:03

Perhaps this is their first home and they're getting it ready to move into after their wedding?

gallifrey · 09/03/2012 16:11

Next time they are outside I'll go out and try and make conversation with them and ask when they are moving in.
The lady that moved out said they were keen to buy asap and get in before christmas which is why we think it's so odd they haven't moved in yet.

OP posts:
cheekybarsteward · 09/03/2012 16:12

Well, that's not a proper look!
Get a bedsheet, loop it around your chimney and swing from your bedroom window to theirs and get a decent gawp!
It's for the sake of the community for gawds sake....neighbourhood watch if you like. ;)
