Is no longer "the home of BU"

I don't catch trains often but last time I was here I had a quiet snigger Grin

Is the flower man still opposite WHSmiths in the square? I used to buy my mum flowers from him every payday.

PurplePidjin · 08/03/2012 16:11

Any chance you could move to a slightly less disruptive area, kids?

Saying that I live in an apparently naice area and have had dealers next door, house broken into, anti social behavior etc. So it's not confined to Knyveton Road Wink

PurplePidjin · 08/03/2012 16:13

WG, there's a lot of needle exchange and outreach round the Crescent now I think

It makes me chuckle that I'm back to dancing in The Academy

I once drove down there at night, PIdj, with my friends - didnt see a single shady lady.....

WhoremoaneeGrainger · 08/03/2012 16:16

One summer i went there every weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun) with one of my mates. We used to drink Diamond Whites with cherry brandy chasers Grin

thekidsrule · 08/03/2012 16:16

i got out of that area years ago,but still have a regular visit there,i was lucky i had the means to move, some dont but guess you will always have areas in towns citys

true where i live and have for years is classed a pretty good, but we have same problems as you, things in general have gone downhill i think unless you live in the super super nice places

gotta run

ElizabethPonsonby · 08/03/2012 16:20

I used to live on Knole Rd in Boscombe for my 1st year. Moved to Winton for the next 3! We used to stagger out of the Academy and down the Bosphorous Kebab shop who did the best burgers ever...drool...

Also used to frequent Pumphreys in the town centre as I was shagging knew one of the bar men quite well...

PurplePidjin · 08/03/2012 16:45

I had. You first pub drink in the Moon in the Square in 1994 aged 13. Dp is very impressed its still there!

Anyone else remember Legends and the milkshakes? Fecking Witherspoon now Sad

Pantah630 · 08/03/2012 19:40

Legends...I remember going in there. Am pretty sure the guys that ran it are behind Shakeaway. It was a paint your own ceramic studio last time I was in the Square, try and avoid the centre now no Borders :( to lure me in.

I'm a survivor of The Gander BPCFE and DI, pre Woly Poly/BU, now working in Boscombe. The Crescent is being revamped and the Vintage market is there once a month now. Problems are now nearer the station than Boscombe, St Clements and Southcote are a no go at nights if you prefer not to glimpse life's rich tapestry. Pokesdown is full of quirky shops again now though and well worth a visit but don't mention the reef the seafront is looking great now too :)

edam · 08/03/2012 19:52

Wow, the Academy, that takes me back. Anyone remember Ocean City the Chinese restaurant? We used to go there a lot - a few of my housemates were Chinese and the staff used to make us stuff that wasn't on the menu.

I lived in a shared student house on Ophir Road - gorgeous house, great mates, fab times. (Hence dropping out, was having far too much fun to actually Do Any Studying. Went to ANOther university a few years later when I had grown up enough to actually make an effort.)

WhoremoaneeGrainger · 08/03/2012 20:22

Pumphreys!!!! OMG! We used to go down there when we were on strike, and had done our bit on the picket line - probably outed myself a little bit there.

Must admit, havent been to Boscombe or Pokesdown in years. Might try a drive over that way at Easter.

Pidj - i got married in 1994, andi was twice your age then Sad.

Whats the vintage market?

WhoremoaneeGrainger · 08/03/2012 20:23

Oh Pantah. The Gander. Have you seen all along there now - all set up for the uni students. Not at all like it used to be. Did you buy bread rolls from Idah's? Used to be able to buy a warm buttered roll for 15p....in 1992!

thekidsrule · 08/03/2012 22:04

idahs used to do the best granary loaf, poor boscombe has lost alot of shops,i often enjoy a wander in boscombe but the shops are getting fewer and fewer

Pantah630 · 08/03/2012 23:33

Oh yes Idah's did the best rolls until Sands started up. We used to get the bus, from deepest, darkest North Dorset to college, 86, old straight to Fortes for tea and a tea cake, couple of lessons, then Gander for lunch and the afternoon playing pool and watching Neighbours in the Sports Bar above. happy days Grin. When I moved to Bournemouth after college we used to go to The Gander in the evenings, was a proper bikers hangout then, all dark and grungy, loved it :)

In Boscombe more than half the shops, Academy end, are shut, it's very sad all cash generators and charity shops. Whereas Pokesdown seems to be having a revival of quirky, vintage inspired shops and a few less antique places. Vintage market, is tat Portabello road inspired market, it's been getting rave revues, not been yet as have had enough of town by Sunday and need to get out in the countryside. Am lucky I live down the road in Xchurch where we have the best of both worlds, water, small town and countryside all within spitting distance. :)

thekidsrule · 08/03/2012 23:35

must try the vintage market,is it the one next to old argos

thekidsrule · 08/03/2012 23:36

we go crabbing at Mudeford in the summer kids love it and the teenagers still enjoy it

Pantah630 · 08/03/2012 23:42

edam Ocean City, Old Xchurch Road, half way up near the courts? Thnk it's still there but Ocean View or the like now. There used to be a hippy cafe up there in the 80's, used to do a great breakfast. It's all kebab houses, Asian supermarkets (great for flatbread) and tattoo parlours along there now, with restaurants dotted amongst them. Swarming with hen/stag night parties and security at night now, no more Artful Dodger and Bacchus :(

Pantah630 · 08/03/2012 23:44

kids it's in the Crescent itself, all stalls and bunting.

thekidsrule · 08/03/2012 23:46

thanks pantah630,will check it out

Pantah630 · 08/03/2012 23:55

Oops apparently now in The Royal Arcade www.boscombevintagemarket.co.uk/

thekidsrule · 09/03/2012 00:07

BaronessBomburst · 09/03/2012 00:25
