To be really angry with myself for crying in front of my boss

It appears that despite being a sane womanist of the time I am incapable of talking to my boss about my career development and gripes (been really mismanaged and devalued since coming back from mat leave) without bursting into tears! (I am sure being first day of my period didn't help). I want to be treated equally yet here I am being unprofessional and all "girls" and hormonal! Aaaahhhhh!

Poor you (I have done it too).

Have a Wine

georgethecat · 07/03/2012 21:59

Ahh, don't worry you are just human.....I have had lots of people crying at me male and female and have cried on many in return in the workplace. We can't manage hardened professional Alan Sugar types all the time.

Perhaps just wait till hormones are controlled, write an agenda and get back in there tiger grrrr.

GreenEyesAndHam · 07/03/2012 22:03

Yep another here who knows how that feels Wine

LentillyFart · 07/03/2012 22:05

The fear of doing just this is actually about a third the reason why I am so reluctant to get back to work - and I really really should. I know my problem is hormonal and I can't help it. I can cry on tap for no bloody reason these days never mind if I did have something to really cry about. I feel for you OP.

SecretNutellaFix · 07/03/2012 22:07

I do that. Have a Brew

Dillytante · 07/03/2012 22:17

I'm like that too! And I am very bad a taking negative feedback

Am now a line manager myself & I don't know how but it has helped me become a bit more dispassionate about it all. Though I did cry when my boss told me one of my staff had made a complaint about me to her.

Part of it is personality types. There are certain personality types who find it hard to divorce themselves from their work so any problem with work becomes a problem with them. I'm one of those people.

MissVerinder · 07/03/2012 22:19

I've done that before. I've also had a proper stand up row with said boss. It was a very informal work environment in an emotional job, so it was all par for the course.

There's no shame in tears :)

Dozer · 07/03/2012 22:21
Brew
monkeybananas · 07/03/2012 22:25

assuming said boss is male??

noinspiration · 07/03/2012 22:25

YABU to be angry with yourself. It won't help, but it will make it seem worse. Don't worry, it is surprisingly common. I've done it, I've mopped up colleagues tears in the ladies, and my DH regularly comes home and says one of his team was in tears about something. Put it down to experience and move on Smile

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 07/03/2012 22:29

:)

It's nature.

Understandable to feel embarrassed etc but nah you're OK x

TheFallenMadonna · 07/03/2012 22:31

Oh god. I did the same today. Mortifying.

PeachyPossum · 07/03/2012 23:03

Did this today too. First day of period and a major kick in from a huge client for work he had signed off.

Shite day.

enjolraslove · 07/03/2012 23:11

haven't done it yet. but do when i get home. and have the first of many G&Ts.

Frazzledredhead · 08/03/2012 09:11

Thanks all- had a takeaway, wine and an early-ish night and some perspective has been gained! Yes my boss is male but that said I report to two men, the one I blubbed too is actually very nice and friendly to working mums and told another staff member to clear off when they came in and interrupted. The other I just can't talk too so lots of pinching my hand under the desk to stop me blubbing which worked for a while before I resorted to one word answers and got out I there Grin
You r right my problem is I actually care- maybe if I was like more of my colleagues who turn up,don't give a damn and then sail through I wouldn't be me! To be fair have only done it about 4 times in a 16yr career! (that I remember!)
Thanks again
