to think that this is NOT a word

a document I received recently had the word "lense" in it.

I queried this as an error - assuming it was meant to be "lens".

The response I got defended its use: "....used the term 'lense' which is actually an older spelling (still appearing in some dictionaries)"

Being pendantic I looked it up in my Dad's dictionary from 1965 and in it the only spelling for lens is "lens". There is no mention of lense (the COED gives the origin of the word as lentil but no mention of lense either)

Surely words should be spelt with their current accepted spelling?

Or do I have to get hold of a 14th century olde dictionairie ?

Maybe I should go to pendants corner with my AIBU? Grin

YANBU - that is not a word. I HATE it when people just make up new spellings, grrrr.

MissAnnersley · 06/03/2012 21:24

dictionary.reference.com/browse/lense

gilmoregirl · 06/03/2012 21:36

so it is on dictionary.com but not in a hard copy dictionary - I don't get it! Confused

Is it a word or is it not? I would tend to go with the COED (and word spell check!) which both agree not

dh says he thinks 'lense' is the American way of spelling it.

gilmoregirl · 06/03/2012 21:39

Is dictionary.com American? If so then maybe it is a favourite / favorite type thing?

In the UK I have only come accross lens

Lens is the correct spelling, lense is a variant used sometimes but it is not correct.

common errors in english

English is not my first language so I always get stumped by things like this.

RuleBritannia · 07/03/2012 10:34

There's another one that I use sometimes. When you display something, you show it. I use shew sometimes. It's not as common now as it was some eyars ago.
