I hate, hate, hate them. Stupid bloody magic key. DS hates reading them and it's like pulling teeth forcing him to read one page let alone 32 pages of drivel.

Just me then?

You are not alone. We're all here for you.

I bloody hate the stupid bastards too, and their stupid bastard bloody magic key. If it helps, it doesn't last forever, it just feels like it.

janx · 06/03/2012 19:47

I hate them too - unfortunately dd likes them... Sometimes I pretend to have lost the library card if she chooses them

rubyslippers · 06/03/2012 19:47

I loathe them

DS has recently moved onto a new series of reading books thankfully

I broke out in a cold sweat at the words 'the magic key began to glow ...'

Choufleur · 06/03/2012 19:48

I can't wait for the day DS gets off reading bands then he may be able to choose something that he is interested in and therefore actually wants to read.

Hecubasdaughter · 06/03/2012 19:48

Nope I hate them. DD's reading really came on when she changed school and they happened to use a different scheme.

Choufleur · 06/03/2012 19:51

I set a timer for DS's reading for 10 mins. We managed 4 pages this evening with him lolling around, forgetting where he was, reading the same word over and over.
At bedtime he happily read some bits of a dinosaur book with me cos he's obsessed by dinosaurs.

Ah, I love them! I sometimes wonder about that dodgy looking ginger bearded bloke with the cap thats always hanging around the kids....

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/03/2012 19:52

thankfully these days are long gone for me.
but i hated these books. dd used to like looking for the random pairs of spectacles on each page.

why couldn't they have proper names Confused

ThreeForTea · 06/03/2012 19:52

..seems a bit odd!

God they are so fucking boring! We have books coming out of our ears in this house, we read a lot and go to the library once a week. Every week he brings home a new standard issue 'Biff Kipper and Chip' book for homework and it's like pulling teeth.

He has a knack of memorising it first time round so it's a totally pointless exercise. I'm naughty, I sign his book saying we've read it every night and spend the time with Roald Dahl or something more engaging.

Choufleur · 06/03/2012 19:55

Must say I haven't noticed him ThreeForTea but then again I'm too busy reminding DS to keep reading and correcting him when he says something that bears no resemblance to the word that is actually written.

DuchessofMalfi · 06/03/2012 19:55

Thankfully DD doesn't have to read them any more :) but we've still got that to face for DS when he starts school next year :(.

Choufleur · 06/03/2012 19:56

I signed for DS this evening - I just couldn't bear it any longer.

flippinada · 06/03/2012 19:56

YANBU.

Apparently Biff, Chip and Kipper and the magic key have been around for a long time. One of my mum's best friends is a retired school teacher; she used to use the same books.

NoTeaForMe · 06/03/2012 19:58

I like them actually, and most children I've worked with like them too. Obviously some don't...

They have 'unusual' names in purpose, they're nicknames. The author decided not to use names that a child reading it might have so came up with nicknames. I think Kippers real name is Christopher-can't remember the others.

boredandrestless · 06/03/2012 19:58

Oh you are definitely not alone OP.

I hate discovering one of these in DS's book bag. The other day he was evil smart enough to suggest that I could read it to him. He hates reading them and obviously wanted to give me a taste of my own medicine. Hmm I was tempted to point out they are just as boring when you're the listener but instead I read the full boring book to him. {evil cackle].

School have said he can choose another book if he gets one he doesn't ike but seen as the choice is either biff and chip books or the most dry, boring non fiction books I've ever seen it's pretty slim pickings!

ThreeForTea · 06/03/2012 20:03

He's the handyman type guy, bad things always happen to him?

Ah, I think i'm alone in my affection for them. I read them all when my younger Bro had them (he's now 25) all my little siblings did them and I used to help them read. They replaced the Village with three corners series - now that was dire!

marriedinwhite · 06/03/2012 20:03

DS started these when he was 4 (he loved them by the way). After a year or two of them DH and I had our final serious chat about whether to have a 3rd child. The final straw was that I knew I would have to submit to the boredom again with DD. Frankly I couldn't face doing it for a third time Grin

Lots of other reasons too, dd being the 5th pg being an important one, but it was an important consideration in the overall scheme of things. Sad. They have more to answer for than losing that bloody magic key.

freelancescientist · 06/03/2012 20:18

LOL Married - best reason ever for limiting family size....
Bloody boring books - there are 4 years between my 2 but the details of these sodding things are etched on my brain. I've had to check DDs reading record before thinking 'I'm sure she's had this one already' only to realise it was DS dragging his sorry little self through the thrills and spills of 'No, Floppy' etc etc years ago........

Choufleur · 06/03/2012 20:23

Roger red hat, billy blue hat can't remember the yellow hatted one. Tbh at the minute they would at least add some variety to things.

ByTheWay1 · 06/03/2012 20:23

We loved them!! Always looked for the spectacles in each book - and the bone in most of them - and there is a surprised looking squirrel in some - oh and the pervy looking handyman..... oh were we supposed to be READING them.....?? Grin Oh, and one of the early books in the series has floppy (the dog) peeing up a tree! I'm sure the illustrator has a bit of a sense of humour!

ChitChatFlyingby · 06/03/2012 20:25

Oh no, they get worse???!!!! We've just started reading and they already give me the pips.

Fleurdebleurgh · 06/03/2012 20:29

I read Biff and Chip 20 years ago!

I quite like them now DS1 is reading them too
