I would have loved these at 24. But are they considered naff nowadays?

She earns a decent whack and lives in a nice shared flat. She's London chic. I can't afford the kind of thing she'd buy for herself.

Isn't it just another ornament taking up valuable space? If I were buying for a 24 year old, I would get something that could be used up; perfume or wine or chocolates (pizza?) or a meal out or cinema/theatre tickets.

If someone gave me that I'd regift it straight away. Filed under tat. Sorry.

Get her a £20 iTunes voucher and a lovely card.

one of the best pressies I ever got was from a friend who bought some blank canvas squares and so sample pots of paints and used different size plates to make some funky personalised pictures for my wall, or another who did some home made cushions and a throw for my couch, both came in at well under £20, but I still have them, and love that my friends made the effort to do something themselves and they could match it to my tastes.

Made me feel very loved and still does when I look at them.

I have the pink one, I love it, we go camping lots and its great for that, it also is great just on my windowsil. (I'm 22)

littlemachine · 06/03/2012 12:14

Is it meant to look like there are fairies trapped in the jar?

So they can't get out?

Trapped, sweet little fairies?

garlicbutter · 06/03/2012 12:39

Ohhh, now I'm all Confused Grin

Fairy jars: Tat or a little bit of wonderment?
Chocolate: Unimaginative or always welcome?
Crafty / vintage : Mistake or meaningful?
Cosmetics: Hit or miss?!

Argh! I dunno!
She is beautiful (of course) but I think can buy herself whatever cosmetic/perfumed things she wants. She has a kooky, sardonic sense of humour. Is quite arty but it's not a major feature in her life. I would give alcohol but can't afford anything 'special' - or the postage. Yes, she'd love cashmere but is out of my league. Buying from Very is more achievable because it's on credit.

Still, it's a nice day so I'll go on a vintage trawl. Then I'll come back and count the votes for/against fairy jars Confused

Fairy jars: wonderment for all ages
Chocolates: always welcome providing they're Belgian
Crafty/vintage: not welcomed by minimalists or those with modern tastes
Cosmetics: far too easy to get it wrong

They're Jar Fairies littlemachine. This species of fairy folk makes its homes in jars because they enjoy living in the security of a closed container that enables them to get on with their lives while being able to safely observe the world outside whenever they choose.

If you are very quiet and watch carefully, you may be able to see these sociable beings having a party at night Grin and if you leave the lid off occasionally they can receive visitors and flit off to call on others of their kind.

As the blurb on my link says 'no fairies were harmed in the making of these jars'.

Grin Love your Jar Fairy story, Izzy!

Thanks for the links, my Gran (91yo) loves shite stuff like that Grin

Rhubarbgarden · 06/03/2012 23:07

Fairy jars = tat.
Quality chocolate = can't go wrong.

garlicbutter · 06/03/2012 23:20

OK, so she's getting a 3kg jar of jelly babies ... She does like them, yes, and they're fairly low-cal.

My sister, who likes illuminated 'tat' as much as I do, will be getting fairies Grin

And I'll be doing DIY for my own garden.

Many thanks, mumsnetters!

Glad the fairies ate safe though Grin

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 07/03/2012 03:05

I will be 24 in the next few weeks and whilst I do love the fairy stuff I just think that they look a bit tacky - I have also seen then being sold on the market for a couple of quid! I love the idea of the chocolate pizza! But if your looking for something a bit different I'd keep your eye on groupon etc as they have some good stuff at the moment that's supposedly mothers day stuff but would double as a birthday gift!

Do you have a nice photo of you two together? The nicest thing my auntie bought for me was a beautiful photo of us together when I was a baby - it just felt so lovely to think she had gone to the effort of finding the pic etc and it takes pride of place

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 07/03/2012 03:06

I take it all back never mind the nicey-Mumbo-jumbo I'd bloody love a box of sweets that big

troisgarcons · 07/03/2012 06:40

it just looks like a jam jar.

garlicbutter · 07/03/2012 12:46

Many, many thanks, CMM Grin Glad I didn't get it all that wrong!!
