Just seen this on the news. There are currently no big supermarkets in this lovely cornish town, so Tesco want to build one on the outskirts.

They say, people already do their weekly shop in big supermarkets in other towns, so there is a demand for it.

If this goes ahead, that means this beautiful place will end up with countless empty shops when the local businesses close. They will then be filled with cash converter shops, crappy take aways and endless charity shops.

I think this is absolutely tragic. If somewhere is lucky enough to have got to 2012 without a big supermarket killing taking over the town it should be celebrated!

I used to work (before teaching) for Plymouth and it made sense for us to become unitary and move away from Devon CC, as we had our own set of problems that perhaps the rest of Devon didn't have. It's also a small unitary authority, so not unwieldy.

I could not see the rationale for Cornwall becoming unitary. The district councils worked well, and for the most part were efficient. Having moved abroad with HM Forces, we wanted to register as Service Voters, so I eventually got through to CCC to see what I had to do, and they denied that one could have a service vote when abroad. I then spoke to a nice lady in what used to be Caradon, and she sorted the whole thing out for me.

I don't understand why it went unitary if the consensus was not to do so.

As to Councillors making a career out of being a Councillor; that is wrong. My mil used to be a Councillor and Mayor 'up country'. She did it on her time and her dime...she claimed expenses (petrol) but nothing else, and that is how it should be. There should be a clear division between those who work for the Council, like the Chief Exec and the rest of the employees, and the Councillors, who should have day jobs and do the Councillor stuff after/around that, and get nothing more than their expenses. It's doing your bit for the community surely, rather than it being your job?

jenfraggle · 12/03/2012 09:38

I was temping at County Hall and fell over while at work last week and ended up in A & E with a suspected broken foot. Luckily it wasn't broken but the Council very kindly ended my assignment and put me back on the dole even though it happened there and they were the ones who called the ambulance. They didn't even try and find out how I was, just sent a message to the Agency saying they didn't want me back and to get someone else to replace me.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/03/2012 09:49

Where on earth will they build it?? Looe is our holiday town, we've been every year for the past 5 years and I love it.

We do Self Catering holiday cottages so always have to trek up to....the town with a Morrison's (oh how rubbish am I lol!) to do our weekly shop but we tend to use the local bakeries etc for day to day stuff.

I don't think it will affect Looe itself that greatly, surely locals go to Morrisons as it is anyway (if they want a supermarket shop that is). So it would potentially take away those customers?

I'm against it on principal as can't imagine where it would be sited as the surrounding area is beautiful, hoping they don't end up destroying countryside needlessly.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/03/2012 09:50

sorry am at work so quickly skim read and added my comment, before realising the thread had moved on Blush

As you were.

stubbornstains · 12/03/2012 22:18

I can't believe I nearly missed a Cornish bunfight thread.....

That would be a saffron bunfight, obviously....

BerryLellow · 13/03/2012 07:19

I didn't realise there were enough Cornish for a bunfight on here :o

scaryteacher · 13/03/2012 12:01

I assume you mean Liskeard BCHSH? I hate Morrisons, so would avoid shopping there like the plague.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 13/03/2012 16:56

Liskeard - that's the one!

Only 5 months until we get down to Looe. Mum's lottery fantasy involves the house in Trenant Wood that you can see across the water from the main car park - I've picked my house, East Looe and it's up on the hill overlooking the mouth of the harbour and the banjo pier

Sorry, distracted with dreams of Looe Grin

shreddedmum · 13/03/2012 16:57

:-( Looe is lovely! fight it!

stubbornstains · 13/03/2012 19:19

I'm hoping that's not a second home fantasy, Brian Cox? (stern glare)

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 14/03/2012 15:31

Oh no, it would be my one and only home

Smile
stubbornstains · 15/03/2012 19:59

You can do it Brian! Who needs a job anyway?

(slightly bitter emoticon)

Lucy2525 · 05/10/2012 14:11

We NEED this supermarket!!!!! There are no jobs here, I've been looking for work and there are none. The local shops are too expensive for our budget, and the nearest supermarket is morrisons which is more expensive than tescos and is a 25 mile round trip from our house. The only proper food shop in Looe is co op which is overly expensive. The sooner it goes ahead the better, lets face it, everyone will flock there once its open!!!!!

GoSakuramachi · 05/10/2012 14:32

If tourists go to places like Looe for quaint little shops, they will still shop in them, and not in Tesco.
What is unreasonable is expecting hard up unemployed locals to be forced to shop in your quaint little twice the price for everything shops because there isn't a supermarket nearby that would be much more affordable.
It's always those that can afford the organic butchers complaining about the plebs wanting to be able to buy value cornflakes instead of imported granola from the deli.

I wonder if it went ahead.

Bubblemoon · 05/10/2012 16:49

No no, not a Tesco in Looe!!!!! Put a stop to it! If they get away with this one they'll be wanting one in proper beauty spots like the Cardew Industrial Estate in Redruth next.

And won't Tesco wanting a second home in Looe price all the other supermarkets out of the market?

Cluffyfunt · 05/10/2012 16:58

Cornwall is not just open for holiday makers.

We (people who live and work here all year round) do need to go shopping.

We do buy from our fantastic, local butchers but, like many people in britain today cash is in short supply and we do need to do a large portion of our grocery shopping in a supermarket.

My closest supermarket is 16 miles away. Much of my journey there is down windey, country tracks roads that are not passable in snow/ice.

Petrol and diesel are £££

As much as I love where I live, I would really love a supermarket closer to me stuff the Emmets Grin

catwomanlikesmeatballs · 05/10/2012 17:15

I'm sure that those who currently can't afford a car to take them to the next town to do their shopping will hugely appreciate having a local supermarket. If people don't want it, they'll go out of business. My town has several supermarkets including tesco and lots of local shops/butchers, low quality stores go out of business very quickly because there is a lot of competition, the consumer benefits.

I don't see why a vocal minority should be allowed to deprive the rest of the community of something they want and will benefit from (especially poorer, more vulnerable members). It's pure middle class snobbery and it's ridiculous.

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 05/10/2012 17:31

MArking place to read later!

RuleBritannia · 05/10/2012 18:50

Tesco creates jobs in new supermarkets but many of them are temporary contracts. I know because I had one without realising that was how I was employed.

Their payroll department is in India and I never received my P45 and had to use a P46 for my next job. Trying to speak to an Indian (0845 number) to ask for my P45 was impossible. Hearing financial jargon in a foreign accent got me nowhere. I still seethe about it 5 years later

slatternlymother · 05/10/2012 19:47

Everything ariel said. Everything.

nailak · 05/10/2012 19:57

those people talking about 4 tescos within 4 miles, i assume you have a car? because seriously for those people without cars who need to walk home with small kids etc, the local tescos are a godsend, the spa/londis type shops are much more expensive.

Also who wants to pick kids up from school then go in and out of endless small shops with no room for puschairs etc, when it is much easier to go tescos and pick up everything you need, uniform, books, stationary, meat, food, medicine.

Not me, I go to tesco/asda about once a month, and in between top up with fruit/veg/milk from small shops on my way home from school run

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 05/10/2012 22:49

I haven't really got much to add, other than it sort of irks me when people visiting an area complain about the 'urbanisation' of tourist/picturesque destinations, but then say, ooh yes, well where I live there are a plethora of supermarkets, it's awful. It's alright complaining when you have too many facilities, but some people, especially in rural areas, just want access to A supermarket with decent quality products where they are not also being ripped off!
Most people I know that live out in the sticks in so called 'beauty spots' (most of mine and DH's family) get a good balance of supermarket products and locally bought produce, as well as making things at home. But, most of them probably wouldn't buy from some of the independent shops so beloved by visitors, where you can pick up a mediocre pot of 'home made preserve' for the bargainous price of £4.50! That's why lots of people in rural areas welcome the big chains with open arms! I know it doesn't apply in all cases, but in quite a few...

cheesesarnie · 05/10/2012 22:58

i live in cornwall. looe is no different to anywhere else here.
tescos will come eventually.

its the second home owners that are the arses Grin
