Aibu to think what's the bloody point in loseing all this weight to then find that loose skin is the replacement?

Coming up to 5 stone weight loss now and feeling pretty damned good. Very comfortably in a size 14 now for the first time since uni and edging into size 12 which is quite frankly incredible for me- but wtf is up with the spare skin?

Previously (admittedly quite fat...) unmarked stomach is now turning crepey as buggery, Each bum cheek has a little sag and don't even start on my bingo wings...

What's the damn point!! I'm really getting into the swing if this weight loss thing now, but wonder if I may look better with a few more pounds rather than as a size 10 in a size 16 baggy skin suit!

How am I supposed to fix this? (clearly if I could afford surgery I'd have chopped the lot off as soon as this problem arose)

Bugger!

are you exercising too?

workshy · 04/03/2012 22:11

you need to push through it, get to a steady weight and then stay at that weight for a year and see how much different you feel

I lost 4 stone and had skin you could grab hold of and pull and it felt really papery IYKWIM but a year on it's so much better -not perfect but better and infinitely better than being 4 stone heavier

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDawn · 04/03/2012 22:11

I once lost 5 stone once only and was epic effort and I went swimming at least four times a week, and I didn't get much loose skin at all. If you tone up it may well fix most of the "sag"...

washingonawednesday · 04/03/2012 22:12

Yup. And I wish i had bought shares in palmers cocoa butter firming cream.

If you exercise as well then over a couple of years things will gradually tighten up.
But you might find that sticking at a 12 leaves you happier than getting down to a 10.

PigletUnrepentant · 04/03/2012 22:15

How old are you? They said that after 35 you need to choose between staying fat or having wrinkles. The skin is no longer as elastic as when you are younger, and the older you are... the worse the problem is.

Faced with the same predicaments I have decided to stay... moderately fat.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 04/03/2012 22:19

Did you do a VLCD?

Keep going, because if you put all the weight back on, lose it again, the excess skin will be even worse. I think you'll be fine. Maintaining for one year after goal weight shrinks the skin.

You must feel so much better, lighter, look better. smaller clothes, massive choice in fashion/experimenting.

Bet your self esteem is higher.

Congratulations so far .. :)

I'm the same but only 3 stone. I hate the loose skin on my stomach and thighs Blush I'm lazy about exercise (well, I have a 6mo baby but it's not really an excuse) but am going to try and do a DVD or something regularly because I desperately need to tone...

washingonawednesday · 04/03/2012 22:22

Vlcd? What's that. I'm going old school and trying not to fill my face every second while running round after my son (ahem - and having lots of sex- its the new yoga! See my previous post!)

Im 31 so hopefully a little time before I fall off that elasticity cliff.

Very Low Calorie Diet.

mojitomania · 04/03/2012 22:57

Loose skin is just that OP. Maybe look into surgery?

wherearemysocks · 04/03/2012 23:04

It will get better with exercise and time. I think even skinny girls get bingo wings when they get older though.

FrenchRuby · 04/03/2012 23:07

Im feeling the same OP, in the past year I have gone from 18stone (I am so ashamed I put on that much weight, 6stone whilst pregnant) to 12st 6lb and still losing (Slimming World) and my loose skin is horrible. If I lie down and press my hand on my stomach it leaves a hand print, I can pull the loose skin on my boob and it will stay in a pinched shape. I am so glad I've lost weight, I feel so much healthier but my skin is making me really depressed. So i have no solution but I really do know how you feel!

FrenchRuby · 04/03/2012 23:09

I have to add, Im 24 with the body of an 80yr old, it's not fair :(

foreverondiet · 04/03/2012 23:22

Tone up and do lots exercise including lots of weight bearing exercise to develop muscle tone under the skin. It will get better over time. Have also seen stuff on the internet that the lower your body fat the less bad the loose skin problem is - might now down to around 18%.

I am 37 and lost 4 stone over 9 months. I do loads of exercise and a year on no loose skin - although stomach a bit crepey.

FrenchRuby · 04/03/2012 23:24

I don't think I'll ever get rid of my loose skin, not without surgery anyway, there's just too much of it. I can literally grab a handful of it.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 04/03/2012 23:28

Proper weight lifters gym think of the potential eye candy too Time is on your side.

foreverondiet · 04/03/2012 23:42

Yes, I do proper weightlifting!

Chest press x 25kg, dead lift 25kg, triceps and shoulders 15kg.

Legs I use powerplate, they get loads of exercise with the running as well.

At home do press ups (full - x 30) plank - 90 seconds, squats x 60, wall squats x 60 seconds, tricep dips plus use 4kg dumbells for various arm exercises - all these twice a day.

carernotasaint · 04/03/2012 23:51

Well done on the weight loss French Ruby thats fantastic.

keepingupwiththejoneses · 05/03/2012 00:21

Well done on the weight loss. I was told that collagen supplements where good for the excess skin and lots of water. Another option is that if your GP knows how much weight you have lost, if you keep it off for 12 months you can qualify to have it removed on the NHS, apparently, so my dad was told when he had a gastric band fitted!
