If there are no signs to ask you not to and you've paid a tenner for an overpriced sandwich and pot of tea?

Just wondering what the consensus is.
(The drink was a small juice box shared between 3yr old DD and 19mth old DS)

YANBU, quite often nothing suitable in type or size available anyway.

BigGirlInASmallWorld · 04/03/2012 20:43

YABU off with your head! Grin

GavisconJunkie · 04/03/2012 20:44

YANBU I challenge anyone to tell me exactly what I can & can't give my pre schooler. £10 for tea & a bap?! Blimey.

troisgarcons · 04/03/2012 20:44

A cafe or restaurant has over heads to pay. Non payin customers do not contribute to those over heads. If you though you were being over priced for a sandwich you should have left.

YABU to expect business owners to facilitate your brood on their premises.

sodapops · 04/03/2012 20:45

YABU.

It's a cafe and selling food and drink is how they make their living.

Pesofanclub · 04/03/2012 20:45

YANBU who cares?

CMOTDibbler · 04/03/2012 20:46

YABU - its rude in someones business premises, and actually a bit of a bugbear of mine tbh

JustHecate · 04/03/2012 20:46

If it's in a cafe or something I would assume you really weren't supposed to. I always assume they have that 'only food and drink bought on the premises is to be consumed on the premises' rule.

ten quid for a sandwich and a pot of tea. Bloody hell.

Sapphirefling · 04/03/2012 20:47

YABU. Bringing water or milk in a childs beaker or cup is fine IMO but anything else is rude. It's a business - not a charity and if you don't like the prices, then don't give them your business. Simples!

BupcakesandCunting · 04/03/2012 20:48

YABU

If you don't like the prices, go elsewhere. You can't pay the prices then arbitrarily decide that you deem them too expensive for your children.

legoballoon · 04/03/2012 20:48

What's the problem. One of mine only drinks tap water - so if we have tea and milk, he has water. No profit there, but they get the profit from the rest of us.

Chulita · 04/03/2012 20:48

I've not been told that before in the other places we'd been, it might have been the last straw after a shared bag of Hula Hoops and a satsuma but I've bought stuff for them so many times only to have it shredded and left in a heap on the floor/table. This way there was no mess, and they only had J2O which I didn't fancy buying for the dc.
Had there been a sign I'd have fed them under the table got them something or waited til we left but there wasn't.
gaviscon it was £7 for a baguette with chips...I'm 39 wks and had a desperate urge for food.

BleurghUna · 04/03/2012 20:48

No probs as long as you were buying something for yourself!

Mishy1234 · 04/03/2012 20:48

Depends on whether you could have bought anything suitable on the premises. Most places don't mind someone giving baby food, or even a few bits to keep a child occupied while they wait for their food.

However, I do think that if there was something suitable there then you should have ordered it.

LydiaWickham · 04/03/2012 20:49

YABU - go somewhere cheaper and/or give your DCs the drinks outside.

scurryfunge · 04/03/2012 20:49

It depends on the premises. If you sit there for hours in order to feed you children then they might get a bit miffed.

Sirzy · 04/03/2012 20:49

If they sold carton drinks there then YABU. If they had nothing suitable then YANBU

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 04/03/2012 20:50

YABU, your children are both old enough to be able to drink what was available. If you were in a cafe and your children were taking up space, they should have had paid for drinks.

Sirzy · 04/03/2012 20:50

Reading you had also taken your own food in for them then YABU.

troisgarcons · 04/03/2012 20:50

take your own packed lunch - you seem to manage to do it for your children.

Chulita · 04/03/2012 20:51

I was thinking more along the lines of the fact that I'd already paid a tenner, so they had been paid. We were there about 25 mins and there was only one other person there so we weren't taking up valuable space that could have been used by someone else.
But yea, if I'd asked for tap water they wouldn't have had any money from that either but couldn't refuse. I might just do that next time.

OP posts:
Sirzy · 04/03/2012 20:52

Paying for one person doesnt make it ok to take out a packed lunch for everyone else in the party in the middle of a cafe.

GavisconJunkie · 04/03/2012 20:52

So what about when people ask for an extra plate & take food off their own plates to feed their kids & give them water to drink?

That is both common & ok with most cafe/restaurant owners & staff.

How is that different?

GavisconJunkie · 04/03/2012 20:56

Chulita I'm not judging! I've been there (in fact I may have literally been there the other day!) I'm 37 weeks & I totally get the starving, fuck it feeling.

Also have 2.2 dd who I wouldn't dream of giving a j20 but would give her her cup & a share of m

LydiaWickham · 04/03/2012 20:56

Gaviscon - because they are feeding their DCs food bought from the cafe, it's no different to ordering one pudding and two spoons for a couple after dinner. It's rather different to bring in food/drinks from elsewhere.
