People seem to be very critical of it, but I quite like it. Charlie Brooker is nice and ranty in a foaming at the mouth kind of way. David Mitchell brings the sex appeal of a sort. He must get a lot of 'pity shags' with his sad, big eyes like a little puppy who shits on the carpet but you can't help but love. Jimmy Carr looks really cute when he dresses up, in the same way as a kitten always does when made to wear a hat. 1funny.com/kitten-hat/ .
And of course you have the other one.
Am I being unreasonable or are there other people who like it?

but overall it's a fuuny show and I would let her touch my bits.

Fair enough. She can do you while David Mitchell does me! Then all over the road for a Balti!

lazarusb · 04/03/2012 19:57

Do you think David Mitchell knows that there are a lot of women on MN who lust after him? If he did, do you think he would be scared? Grin

TiggyD · 04/03/2012 21:06

I'm sure he knows lots of women fancy him. I'm willing to bet he is shagging each of them in alphabetical order and marking them out of ten for stamina, artistic expression, hairiness, and likeness to Margaret Thatcher.

As David is a notable Lib-Dem, Dame Shirley Williams, surely!

lazarusb · 04/03/2012 21:20

TiggyD Well, that would be bloody typical - my name begins with a W. Envy

Tranquilidade · 04/03/2012 23:04

I like Lauren Laverne, I think she is good in this and a good foil to the others. She's pretty, intelligent and amusing.

Jo Brand and Sandi Toksvig are brilliantly funny but more of an age for QI than this. Personally I don't think Sue Perkins would be good, I don't like her faux-sarcastic tone and think that, as well as Charlie Brooker doing the same, would be just too much.

TiggyD · 05/03/2012 16:50

I could help them make it even better by writing it for them!

Lauren: [In latex catsuit and heels] "Welcome to the show!"
[Sits round table with the others]
"How's your week been?"

Charlie: "Grumble grumble grumble. Nobody likes me. I'm going to my room." [Storms off]

David: "Rarrr rarrr rarrr rarrr politics rarrr rarrr!" [Flicks hair sexily]

Jimmy: "Penis penis penis penis penis penis, lady bits!"

[Lauren walks off to do her talky bit. Zoom in in bottom]
Lauren: "Oooh, the worlds' dreadful. Don't go out! Charlie!"

[Cut to Charlie's bedroom door]
Charlie: "Go away! Leave me alone! You don't understand me!"

[Cut to Jimmy dressed as a squirrel]
Jimmy: "Penis penis penis penis penis, hiding my nuts!"

[cut to David dressed only in gold hotpants slowly gyrating to 70s sounding funk track.]
David: "Rarrr rarrr rarrr rarrr rarrr rarrr reform of the European Union Rarrr rarrr!" [flicks hair sexily at Mumsnetters]

etc

I think Lauren holds it all together and manages the links seamlessly. I don't like Jimmy Carr's impressions (his Rupert Murdoch one was cringeworthy) but I actually like Charlie Brooker's slant on the world and love David Mitchell's interview style, he knows exactly how to get his guests going and what questions to ask.

Lauren is not just eye candy at all, they are all about the same age, all come from the same political viewpoint and she does some very intelligent and thought provoking stuff.

I agree with most points they make, it's a well constructed series that makes some very pertinent points whilst remaining light-hearted. It gets my thumbs up.

NarkedPuffin · 05/03/2012 18:46

Lauren's brilliant.

Who the fuck suggested Victoria Coren Shock. She is so annoying. I watch Only Connect and have developed a certain tolerance to her, but giving her more air time would be madness. Her brother is also really annoying. The only thing that makes him bearable is Sue Perkins. Maybe Sue could act as a Coren buffer and join them for all tv work.

LittleAlbert · 05/03/2012 18:55

Aren't David Mitchell and Victoria Coren an item?

I think the show is a bit lame. It's pretty take, the satire is mainly poking fun at individuals and there doesn't seem to be the in -depth knowledge of current affairs which can make these programmes informative and very funny.

They need someone prepared to be very controversial (such as Frankie BoyleMarcus Brigstock)

At the moment it's like sitting in the university union after a few pints.

fatagainkathsigh · 05/03/2012 18:57

Leave off Lauren Lavern. She's quite funny. And from Sunderland and went to my ex school so can't do any wrong!

tribpot · 05/03/2012 18:58

I think it is believed that they are, Albert, not sure either has confirmed it. I think they would be lovely together, if perhaps fantastically neurotic.

So far this series has been quite tame, although I liked Charlie's Sun poem. No doubt I will be able to read it in the Guardian, see it on Screenwipe and it will feature in his next TV drama as well Grin.

NarkedPuffin · 05/03/2012 19:29

The problem is finding the balance.

The people on the show have 'an in depth knowledge of current affairs.' Channel 4 is targeting a specific demographic and doesn't want to make the show too 'in depth.' Even in it's second series it hasn't really found it's voice. It seems to wobble between intelligent, satirical comment and dressing up in fun costumes making knob jokes. Sometimes it does both.

You can tell how the show will be next week by the length of the pauses between the jokes and the audience laughter. Sometimes you can actually hear the cogs turning.

hiviolet · 05/03/2012 22:12

Glad I'm not the only one with a Coren intolerance. Victoria just radiates smug, and is one of those women who says she only really has male friends. I'm always suspicious of women who don't seem to like other women.

Giles, I just remember him blowing a gasket (to a sub editor at the Graun I think?) about the deletion of one word from a restaurant review. It was hilarious but he was an unpleasant arrogant shit.

NarkedPuffin · 05/03/2012 23:53

I'd forgotten about that!

Maybe they'll improve with age.

NekoChan · 06/03/2012 00:07

Yes YABU.
It's just shit; I'm still trying to erase that awful scene in the 1st episode with Jimmy Carr 'dressed' as Vladimir Putin. Jo Brand wouldn't get involved with it even if she was asked because it's a dreadful, cringe worthy, unfunny programme and she is a comedy genius :o

Archemedes · 06/03/2012 00:12

Aw I love Charlie Brooker he once made a comment about a footballer who'd been caught cheating maybe Rooney.

'He's basically a mammal with one unique skill , like a Bear that can play the Accordion'. gold :D
