Would you be a smoker if you were living in the 60s or 70s?

Looking at TV ads for smoking and they all seemed to be aimed at women. I wonder if I'd have been taken in by them and taken up the habit if i'd been in my teens or 20s forty years ago.

WhereYouLeftIt I think Kool are an American brand, I've seen Simon Cowell smoking the menthol ones they do, I used to buy them in Spain.

I bet I would have been a smoker back then. I used to be a smoker, then a social smoker and gave up even socially smoking when ttc. Even now I can smell smoke and it makes me want one and other days it turns my stomach. My entire family have been smokers, it seems odd now most have given up.

I remember even in the last few years in Spain you could smoke in the supermarket and in offices etc. Me and my then DP used to wander around looking like Shock Grin

Silk cut?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 03/03/2012 22:44

When I talk to my students now they can't believe that there used to be smoking on buses, on planes, in the cinema, in restaurants.....

I think I probably wouldn't have started if I was young now, as most of my early cigarettes were smoked in the pub. If I'd had had to go and stand outside I suspect I would not have bothered.

Maryz it was the same in an office I worked in. I used to go and have smoke breaks with the smokers even when I'd given up, I couldn't see how it was fair otherwise.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2012 22:45

I wouldn't because I have always found the smell disgusting and utterly repulsive.

yy endoplasmic.

What gets me is every time I go up the escalators at King's Cross tube and remember the smoking carriages on the tube trains. I remember the old wooden escalators and the fag butts in the wooden grooves.

winetime · 03/03/2012 22:52

I remember in the early 90's you could smoke in the back area of aeroplanes and also in offices certain times were given to smokers - so for half an hour in morning and afternoon out came the ashtrays.
I am sure I remember vending machines for cigarettes too outside corner shops so anyone could buy them (this would be in the 70's)
and cinemas - one side for smokers and one side for non smokers

munkysea · 03/03/2012 23:00

No. My parents weren't smokers in the 60s or 70s so I don't see why I would be.

SardineQueen · 03/03/2012 23:07

I would've been smoking like a good 'un, yes. Seeing as I smoked like a trooper in the 90s and much of the 00s!!!

And I'm not exactly ancient but I remember
Smoking on the tube
Smoking on the bus
Big ashtrays in the banks, those tall ones with a bin underneath
Televised snooker and darts featuring pint after pint and chain smoking
Talk shows with smoking

I mean it was everywhere!

I was born in 73 not that old surely Confused

SardineQueen · 03/03/2012 23:08

"I remember the old wooden escalators and the fag butts in the wooden grooves."

Yes I remember that! And on our line we had old tube trains with wooden grooves on the floor and all old fag ends in them.

Chubfuddler · 03/03/2012 23:09

I haven't smoked for six years. This thread is making me want a fag.

Caz10 · 03/03/2012 23:09

Bleurgh just remembering "the smoke room" at my 1st office - no windows or other ventilation, I used to sometimes eat in there! Yuck!

SardineQueen · 03/03/2012 23:10

When i started my office job in the mid 90s the people i worked with all fondly remmbered being able to smoke at their desks.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

I used to love smoking rooms at work though Smile

Dawndonna · 03/03/2012 23:13

Started in the seventies. Gave up seven weeks ago. Wanna fag!
Sad

messymammy · 03/03/2012 23:18

Gah, why did I click this thread! I'm off cigarettes since January. Am feeling very proud of myself but still want one like mad.
I remember getting the train for our holidays as young teenagers and going to the "snack car" so we could claim the smell of the sneaky fag we had was because we had walked through the smoking carriage, and I am only 25!

CreepyWeeBrackets · 03/03/2012 23:21

Well of course I would!

I could be like Lauren Bacall and get smacked around by fit men and everything!

Some men don't like ladies smoking though which is okay because they can always blow in our face

garlicbutter · 03/03/2012 23:26

I was! And still am.

I'm not given to regrets, but one bad decision out of hundreds I made was the day when, aged 17, I skived off school with my best friend Vicki specifically for her to teach me how to smoke. Vicki was, to me, the epitome of sophistication.

Now I'm a hopeless addict on roll-ups :(

Mind you, I still feel as though something tragic has been lost when I see people smoking indoors on TV reruns!

garlicbutter · 03/03/2012 23:28

Oh, Weevil, Bacall was my idol! I spent yonks cultivating that face-fall of hair and the disdainful glance through a film of smoke.

garlicbutter · 03/03/2012 23:29

Weevil? Confused Brackets! Sorry. Need a fag.

CreepyWeeBrackets · 03/03/2012 23:31

I remember being able to smoke in the cinema Shock

All-night-horror screenings. Wall-to-wall zombies, teenage admirers and vodka and coke and no fucker caring what you brought in or spilled.

CreepyWeeBrackets · 03/03/2012 23:32

Weevil Grin

Brilliant! I might change to CreepyWeevil.

I loved Bacall's look too. That fifties wave. Hayworth, Monroe never achieved it.

ComposHat · 04/03/2012 01:59

People used to smoke on gameshows in the US, the host and contestants. And on talk shows too! Not sure if that happened over here or not

I seem to remember Dave Allen smoking like a chimney during his monologues and people on chatshows lighting up all the time.

garlicbutter · 04/03/2012 02:04
, fag in hand :) :)
