to wish you could get entire albums of radio edits?

My children are 3 and 5. They love pop music. Now, maybe I'm just a stuffy old curmudgeon, but the lyrics of most album versions of pop songs are completely unsuitable for young children. I wish you could get an album of all the radio edit versions.

I loved pop music when I was young too - I don't remember all my songs being sweary and about sex though.

Or AIBU for even thinking that children should be allowed to listen to pop music?

you could make up your own album by downloading the radio edits from itunes

Convert · 03/03/2012 12:57

You are really NBU. My boys are the same ages as yours and I really like to have music on, most of the day its on in the kitchen but most of the r&b and hip hop stuff I like is full of swear words so I have to have the bloody radio on instead.
I also think that most of the music channels show videos during the day that are completely innapropriate, if that stuff was in a film or a tv program there is not way people would let kids watch it so why does MTV have it on constantly.

Magneto · 03/03/2012 12:57

Just buy the singles.

Convert · 03/03/2012 12:58

Fuzzywuzzy, love your name. My mom used to say that rhyme to me when I was little!

Threeprinces · 03/03/2012 12:58

YANBU, I tried for ages to get radio edits if a green day album, even contacting the record company, no joy. And they are not available to download either but they can play them on the radio!!! Agghhhh!
OP, II sympathise and agree with you.

Threeprinces · 03/03/2012 12:59

Convert, you're right MTV is not appropriate child viewing IMO.

SilentBoob · 03/03/2012 13:06

The most surprising things are inappropriate. This thread was prompted by 5 yr old asking me to put on The Lazy Song by Bruno Mars ("today I don't feel like doing anything - doodleoo doodleoo") and I thought fine and stuck it on, without realising there's a verse that goes...

Tomorrow I'll wake up, do some P90X
Meet a really nice girl, have some really nice sex
And she's gonna scream out: 'This is Great' (Oh my God, this is great)
Yeah

Which, okay, isn't shocking or terrible, but the music dropped for the lyrics of that bit to be really clear... and it has made me wonder whether pop music might actually not be aimed at young children at all. Maybe they should be listening to Raffi and nursery rhymes?

It's a shame.

YANBU

DS1 is obsessed with Moves Like Jagger so I downloaded it from iTunes for him and only then realised that it has the word 'shit' in it which is obviously blanked out on the radio - not a big deal in the scheme of things but not a word that I want my 5 year old to listen to Hmm

Magneto · 03/03/2012 13:12

Pop music isn't aimed at kids Hmm just let your kids listen to whatever you like to listen to. When I was 5 I listened to the carpenters, osmonds (when with my mum) and meatloaf and Gary glitter (when with my dad). When I grew up I found my own taste in music (mainly queen and David Bowie) and so ds listens to these because it's what I listen to.

Surely music is music? Why does it have to be what's in the charts now?

SilentBoob · 03/03/2012 13:15

Are there any artists that are completely safe for small children? Olly Murs or some such?

I would LOVE to listen to Pink or Lady GaGa at home but obviously no chance!

Ah you see, this is why They Might Be Giants only do kids albums now - they've spotted a huge gap in the market.
I think the more kiddy orientated Pop Party compilations stick to songs with PG lyrics (though I haven't checked in detail - maybe I'm kidding myself and DD is learning far too much about the mating habits of the urban male).

DilysPrice · 03/03/2012 13:22

And of course there's sodding Justin Bieber, an artist whose demographic is so young that he had to censor the lyrics of a Busted song (Year 3000 - please don't ask me how I know) before he could cover it.

The For The Kids charity compilation albums are quite good, as is Colours Are Brighter.

SilentBoob · 03/03/2012 13:27

Was it the triple breasted women swimming around town totally naked? Grin

DilysPrice · 03/03/2012 13:34

Actually OP, yes it was, but also the female relative went from being "pretty fine" to "doing fine" Hmm

But I maligned Mr Bieber - it wasn't him after all - it was the Jonas Brothers.

I don't think lady Gaga swears. DD is 3 and loves her.

I buy the odd song from itunes and lots of them say if they're the explicit or clean version. Being a boring old mum I have to buy the clean versions. It will be fun the day the dc's realise mum has some NWA and Peaches in her CD collection Blush.

Papyrus · 03/03/2012 15:43

I love Muse and their lyrics are pretty non sweary. I fear we've done a pretty good job of indoctrinating the DC. DD3, 5 months will only go to sleep if we put 'Starlight' on.

DumSpiroSpero · 03/03/2012 15:44

Oh dear - I am clearly a terrible mother as DD spent most of her preschool years listening to a combo of Amy Winehouse & Kate Nash. I just used to sing an alternative word over the rude bits!

She loves pop music and tbh I think a lot of the stuff we pick up on as adults probably goes straight over the heads of DC's, and some of the language is pretty unintelligible, so I tend to take a fairly laid back approach. Obviously anything with really obvious, nasty swearing is out, and I watch any music vids she's interested in before letting her watch them but if I'd had to listen to 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' on a loop for the last 7 years I'd have gone mental!
