To be rather ashamed and embarrassed that on Tuesday I did this for the first time in 2 years?

I cleaned out the bath plug. I can honestly say that it has never occurred to me to do it before! It was boakworthy. I could've made a new wig with all the hair I pulled out. There was a MAHOOOOOOOOSIVE clump of hair (about the size of a dwarf hamster) that I dread to think how many dead spiders were tangled up in it. I shall be doing it more regularly from now on. Although it was quite theraputic pulling all the hair out. . .

ooh TheRealMrsHannigan I just used the Dr Beckmann deep clean hygienic thingie and my washing machine is nice and fresh. this thing It even degunked some of the rubber seal - I used it at 90°C as the instructions said at least 60°.

diddl · 02/03/2012 16:22

People clean plugs??

Isn´t life too short?

Methe · 02/03/2012 16:35

How do you do it?

TheRealMrsHannigan · 02/03/2012 16:54

jaggythistle that's it, Beckmann nor Bergman! Blush Works wonders.

NorthernChinchilla · 02/03/2012 16:55

Did mine today, least favourite job ever.
DP has long, curly hair, which he refuses to brush, and so 'detangles' in the shower. Although he's stopped leaving presents of hairballs decorating the fucking bathroom and shower, it now goes down the plug. Or rather, doesn't

I pull out feet of the stuff. I then throw down the Mr Muscle stuff, cursing DP as I do. And he has the cheek to go on about my 'Draino addiction'.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 02/03/2012 17:16

I don't have any drain stuff, I used this tiny hook thingy out of a manicure set Blush :o

northern @ your DPs hair

I use a wad of toilet roll to pull out the hair then chuck in the loo and flush - Job Done.
Then you don't actually handle it.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 02/03/2012 17:30

"DD has bum length hair its the only way"

Oops, read that as "DH has bum hair its the only way"

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/03/2012 17:35

My machine is never empty long enough for a maintence wash Envy

I clean my bath plug every day. I do it whilst I am in the shower.

sportsfanatic · 02/03/2012 17:39

Buy one of those little drain guard thingies - has holes in it like a sieve and just sits on the plughole and traps the hair. Doesn't stop the soap residue so you still get slime (yeuch) but at least it's not all caught up in hair.

Florabeebaby · 02/03/2012 17:40

Good god, my house is going to be so clean.

I'm so excited...I'm even going to buy Method cleaning products, I've been told they smell nice!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 02/03/2012 17:46

Method are great. I use the sprays and they last for ages. I prefer ultra chemicals for the bathroom though Blush

bleach is my friend.

oldraver · 02/03/2012 20:09

I have a little 'catchy hair' thingy that goes over the plughole as I get loads of hair falling out.... well enough to fill the thingy every other day.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 02/03/2012 20:18

I love doing it. I let it build up so I can get myself a good catch. Grin

Although saying that, I inspected my flat today after my previous tenant moved out. The bathroom is in a very sorry state and I dread to think what the plughole is like going by the condition of the grouting! I feel sorry for whoever has to clean it. Sad

GrittersWifeAndProud · 02/03/2012 20:32

I took a photo of the clump next to the plug hole so you can see just how much there is. I would offer to show it off but I don't have access to internet via a computer and I don't know if you can upload photos on an iphone. It really is quite a spectacular haul.

My sister had her boyfriend pulling the pipes apart under her bath last week as the water was draining so slowly (apparently it had never occurred to her to clean the plughole out?) Anyway, he pulled out this huge, matted lump of hair and slime and she screamed coz she thought it was a dead rat! Grin Grin

GrittersWifeAndProud · 04/03/2012 01:48

Shock :o ewww

It never ocurred to me either till my feet were completely submerged by the time I'd finished my shower Blush

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 04/03/2012 01:53

Long hair here too so the plug hole needs doing frequently (cannot stand those drain things) - I tried veet the other day, it didn't touch it?? (I used the in shower stuff so maybe that's why? If not I use a disposable glove and do it by hand).

thismumismad · 04/03/2012 08:43

Caustic soda will dissolve hair and soap residue in the pipes very nicely, I soo love the gurgle, the plug makes after a treatment. I always have loads of it as I'm starting a business making soap Grin.

gettingeasier · 04/03/2012 08:50

Do you make up a solution with the caustic soda ?

thismumismad · 04/03/2012 08:58

Yes I dissolve it in water, you add the powder to the water never the other way round, pour it down the plughole then leave it for a bit.

TattyDevine · 04/03/2012 09:04

Ooh I have to do mine often. I have a trap thing that you lift out but if you don't do it often enough and a big chunk of hair breaks free of it and goes down the drain, it can sort of get stuck in the bend and rot, and it smells like rotten eggs, its horrible. Then if you disolve it with something it can form a plug. Ugh. So whilst life is too short, a few seconds of Ugh to avoid the whole upstairs landing stinking of rotten eggs is well worth it! Grin

MackerelOfFact · 04/03/2012 10:18

Oh I quite like doing this. I pull out the hair and then place it somewhere visible to freak DP out. Regardless of how often I do it, the hairball is nearly always the size of a rodent. It's the gift that keeps on giving - you think you're nearly at the end, and then a massive bit comes out!

Another fun thing to do with your bathroom plumbing is plunging. I was recently reunited with my plunger after a stint hiding behind the washing machine (the plunger, not me) and now I'm back to merrily plunging grot out of my bath and sinks.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 06/03/2012 00:00

I saw a tip for a budget plunger on tv a while ago, cut a tennis ball in half, it'll just fit over the plug hole and pump it up and down.
