To be a closet watcher of Bollywood Movies and Bollywood Bang Bang?

BettySuarez · 02/03/2012 11:16

I get shouted at by the kids if I try to watch it while they are home so have to resort to secret viewings whilst they are at school Smile

It's like being transported away to a different time and place

Beautiful women (with real curves!!!!) and men who worship the ground they walk on. I am fascinated by the colourful costumes and the dance routines and the fact that the sun always shines.

Anyone care to join me for some bangle shaking? Grin

Haha, I have a little Bollywood crush myself, and will sometimes get myself a Bollywood cinema ticket when I'm going by myself, as none of my family/friends will entertain the idea and seem to think I'm a bit mad.

I too like the singing/dancing and the general upbeat atmosphere of many of the movies (along with a generous dollop of drama). They also remind me of some of the older musical movies I used to really like (Meet me in St. Louis, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, etc.)

HoneyandHaycorns · 02/03/2012 12:37

I adore Bollywood. I could watch it all the time. Grin

BettySuarez · 02/03/2012 13:20

WhiteShores - no-one will attend the cinema with me either but I haven't been brave enlough to go on my own (yet!!)

I also fancy 'Movies for Seniors' even though I am not quite in the age category. You get a cup of tea and a bloody biscuit too!!!! Grin

Oooh my memories of it way back in the 80's are either of cinemas in wembley and these films went on for so long you had 3 breaks for icecream (not a bad thing) or of bootleg video tapes (ropey). The entire exended family crammed into one house and all of us cousins on matresses on the floor and after a massive game of monopoly and it would be around 10pm and at this time an aunt would ceremoniously try and get on of these tapes to work and then.........

just fast forward the music and dancing to the normal dramic dialogue! So if you didn't understand Hindi you wouldn't get anything out of it as we youngsters didn't (and they didn't have English subtitles in those days).

Aaah memories of my yoof.

Oh I love bollywood! I especially like the comedies, like Hera Pheri. I need a tena lady watching some of them! Grin

It's fun watching the remakes of Hollywood classics too. I watched one the other week that was a remake of The Hand that Rocked the Cradle (Khal-Naaikaa).

Hopstheduck · 02/03/2012 15:48

There was also a kind of take on Rain Man, called My name is Khan, with Shah Rukh Khan which was really good, I was swallowing back the tears during that.

Hopstheduck · 02/03/2012 15:49

we actually got my dt2is name from a MASSIVE bollywood actor too. Grin

somewherewest · 02/03/2012 16:59

Nah, I love Bollywood. I was lucky enough to stumble upon the filming of a Bollywood movie in Oxford once. Imagine forty beautifully choreographed Bollywood dancers doing their thing in the most gorgeous bit of ye olde Morseworld on a lovely summer's day. I was gutted I didn't have my camera.

HoneyandHaycorns · 02/03/2012 17:26

Ah, I liked "my name is khan". Other favourites are "kabhi Khushi kabhi gham" and "kuch kuch hota hai". Dd loves "jab we met".

And I will watch anything with Abhishek Kumar in it. Wink

Hopstheduck · 02/03/2012 17:42

whose Abhishek Kumar Confused

Is that both Akshay Kumar and Abhishek Bachan rolled into one? Wouldnt mind some of that Grin

Hopstheduck · 02/03/2012 17:44

*who is

HoneyandHaycorns · 02/03/2012 18:21

Oops, meant akshay Blush. Not fond of Abhishek but do like his dad!

Mandy2003 · 02/03/2012 20:19

When I lived in London I always used to rent the Bollywood videos(!) from the local Asian corner shop. I remember at the time my favourite was called 'Laddai' (I think that's how it was spelled). I would have to travel a long way to rent/buy a movie now though Sad

par05 · 02/03/2012 20:19

Absolutley love bollywood me dh and kids all watch religiously lol!!
My favs are salman khan and john abraham love them!!!!

beeny · 02/03/2012 20:23

I never thought there would be so many non asians watching bollywood films!
You would all love Dil to Pagal hai with Shahrukh Khan.

Hopstheduck · 02/03/2012 21:02

Mandy - lovefilm do Bollywood films!

I've rented mostly from there, though they are easy enough to buy in Slough, or Wembley when we go there. I do get sometimes a little bit fed up with the odd looks I get if I actually go in a store, so online is easier Grin

I can cope with the polite interest, but it's the downright rude disbelief I don't like. Like in Asda, buying chapatti flour - 'you make you OWN chapatis' Shock dunno if anyone has watched goodness graceious me? Well I replied, 'yes, make it at home for cheaper!' Grin

Amitabh Bachan is far too old now. Akshay is my son's name! Dh suggested it thinking of Akshay Kumar. He's good looking like him too Wink

That sounds familiar! Beeny, not sure if I seen it or not!

BettySuarez · 02/03/2012 21:10

beeny - I am not Asian but find the movies (and the story-telling in music videos) fascinating. There is something quite compelling about them although it's hard to put my finger on it. Old fashioned romance perhaps?

Well if anyone is in the North Wilts area and fancies a Bollywood movie, then count me in Grin

beeny · 02/03/2012 21:16

Betty im addicted to shahrukh khan and Cary Grant.I just love movies where men were men and women were glad of it.

beeny · 02/03/2012 21:18

Hopestheduck most middle class asian girls in the UK don't know how to make chapattis I'm impressed!

Chopstheduck · 02/03/2012 21:37

I know what you mean, beeny.

BettySuarez · 02/03/2012 21:44

Do are you near Reading? Grin
