AIBU to make DP eat the damn pizza

We both work. Him 4 days a week full time, me 3 days a week part time. I try and cook as much as possible fresh, homecooked, hot meals for DP and the children 99% of the time.

Last night I started work at 4.30pm and finished at 10.00. I was busy during the day so didn't have time to cook anything or put it in the slowccoker and to be honest I do it most days and like the odd evening off.

DP feeds the kids crap when I haven't made anything which is fine, it's not all the time and i'm sure the children love a bit of rubbish now and again.

He done them a 'buffett' last night, which is one of his favourites and consists on bits and peices from the fridge and whatever he can lay his hands on which requires little or no cooking and no thought.

I came down this morning to find a WHOLE cooked pizza in the fridge, obviously he's done too much again, he often does this, Now, we have this often and it inevitably ends up in the bin, as it's not very appetising.

However, we are not in a position to throw away food and DP is oblivious to how much shopping actually costs. We are skint, we have just moved into a new house and the credit cards are maxed out and we owe IN laws for brand new furniture, we manage but we are not in a position to throw away food regularly cos he cant be bothered to get up and cook something, instead relying on chips, pizza with chips, pasta and chips Hmm and chips with chips .

AIBU to cook my children and I a meal tonight and serve him up the damn pizza.

It sounds really trivial I know 'it's just a pizza' well towards the end of the month we are so broke we are often eating storecupboard staples til payday, the pizza would be a luxury. I'm so sick of his attitude to it all

YANBU at all. OTOH, my DH would look on it as a treat. He eats anything.
Send your DH shopping, that'll teach him the cost of food.

Byeckerslike · 02/03/2012 08:23

YANBU... Cut it up and call it a 'buffet' Grin

bagelmonkey · 02/03/2012 08:25

Maybe he was saving it for breakfast?
Left over pizza is great. (if you haven't snaffled it all the night before)

Callisto · 02/03/2012 08:27

Don't serve him up anything. Let him sort himself out and then I think you need to ask him why he is so lazy and careless when it comes to looking after his children, and why he can't take responsibility for avoiding food waste.

(Also, if you are skint why did you buy brand new furniture?)

KatAndKit · 02/03/2012 08:27

YANBU to be pissed off about the wastage, especially if it means less money for decent food at the end of the month.

But perhaps planning of meals needs to happen on a week by week basis so if he is going to make pizza and chips he knows how many pizzas have been planned for. Yes, he should use his common sense and work it out for himself but clearly he isn't doing this yet. Better still, you can put something different on the meal plan and perhaps he will feel obliged to cook it.

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 02/03/2012 08:28

Why don't you all take a piece of pizza for lunch today? Pizza eaten, no food wasted, everyone happy?

GavisconJunkie · 02/03/2012 08:30

YANBU Make him eat it for lunch & dinner!

Why should you bust your ass cooking cheaply from scratch only for him to do this thoughtless crap?!

Strawbezza · 02/03/2012 08:32

It's not wasted - eat it cold instead of sandwiches for lunch today or tomorrow. Certainly don't throw it away.

takingiteasy · 02/03/2012 08:39

I think you're over reacting a bit.

qazxc · 02/03/2012 08:39

YANBU. but it's not a hardship, i love cold pizza the next day. breakfast of champions Grin .

GavisconJunkie · 02/03/2012 08:41

Callisto picture this...

AIBU to be annoyed that a random person I barely know moved into a bigger house than they previously owned & bought new (NEW!!! FFFS!!!) furniture. Not only did they do this, but they borrowed money from their family !!!!!

The mum & dad work a lot & they seem to have minor jiggles about food.

Replies: endless MYOBB!!!

You next post perhaps?

EightiesChick · 02/03/2012 08:44

YANBU. Just don't buy pizza in and then he won't be able to do this. He could give them beans on toast or something instead. Hmm at his inability to do any meal prep too when he is only at work one day more than you. I know you're part-time but IMO once combined with all the other tasks you are probably picking up, it probably isn't that much different.

iscream · 02/03/2012 08:51

Slice, wrap, re freeze in individual portions.

Sorted.

iscream · 02/03/2012 08:52

I try and not let small things piss me off, not worth it. Nobody is perfect.

Shutupanddrive · 02/03/2012 12:17

Yum cold pizza is even better than hot, I'm sure it will get eaten. I think your overreacting a bit

headfairy · 02/03/2012 12:21

YANBU, but then I have a dh who would never leave a cooked pizza uneaten :o

If he whinges, tell him to add a bit of chopped ham, whatever veg you have (sliced onion, pepper etc) and a bit more cheese and bung it in the oven for another 15 mins to revive it.

And if he still whinges, tell him he has to do next months food shopping and meal planning and make him stick to your usual budget.

imnotmymum · 02/03/2012 12:25

just eat it !! DP kids whoever life to short to worry about this

nickelhasababy · 02/03/2012 12:28
Confused

i don't understand why you need to make a whole new meal for you and the kids?

why can't you all have the pizza?
if it's not big enough for a full meal, then add some extra bits like salad, or hard boiled eggs or bread slices or beans or veg or coleslaw etc.

Callisto · 02/03/2012 12:30

Gaviscon - not entirely sure of your point there. I was merely curious about the new furniture as if I'm skint I go without or buy cheapo secondhand. As for minding my own, it seems to have escaped your attention that this is a public internet forum that only exists because people don't mind their own business.

Ephiny · 02/03/2012 12:35

I don't see the problem if leftovers are put in the fridge - nothing gets wasted and it means less cooking the next day, it's all good surely?

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 02/03/2012 12:41

This is a sticking plaster on a broken leg. How RIDICULOUS that your DH can't prepare a simple meal, and instead feeds your children MORE EXPENSIVE rubbish on a regular basis!

Cheap, easy, fun, nutritious meals for children are not hard. Our fall-back emergency lunch is baked beans with some frozen sweetcorn and peas thrown in the pan and heated with the beans. Surely he can do that?! And it costs pence!

So, new regime. No more crap 'Daddy can't cook' ''buffets''

Insist he learns how to:

  • Open tins of beans, add handfuls of frozen veg to them, OR grate cheese in;
  • Cook a bit of pasta in a pan and add some pesto or passata and grate some cheese over it;
  • Realise that you can microwave small potatoes within five minutes, crisp them in the oven and have a child's lunch in 15 mins.

Then he moves on to omelettes and pancakes...

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 02/03/2012 12:46

Is it just me that thinks CrunchUnderfoot is a bit weird putting peas and sweetcorn into baked beans Grin.

Lovecat · 02/03/2012 12:49

I'm with you, switchoff... not only would it taste godawful it seems like a recipe for fartiness...

headfairy · 02/03/2012 12:53

ooh yes, veg with baked beans would get a big thumbs down in our house. However I agree with crunch's point though, even my dh who can't boil water without burning it can put some fishfingers and oven chips in the oven and boil some peas in a pan of water.

coraltoes · 02/03/2012 13:32

Your husband is a lazy fucker.

Grill some chicken legs, serve with rice and veg. Easy. Takes 20 minutes.
Make omelette, serve with salad. 10 minutes max
Breakfast for dinner eggs, sausages, baked beans, toast. 15 minutes.

Ask yourself why you married such a fucking wastrel with no brains for cash management, no care for kids health, 2 seconds.
