to think that there is a time and a place, but the school playground is not it?

I probably am BU, but I'd like to hear what the rest of you think.

One of the mums I see at school every morning is a wheelchair user, she is a lovely lady, and I know that she is a regular church goer.
This morning at drop off (DD in reception year of CofE primary school), outside the class door in the playground, I saw this lady had her trousers rolled up above her knees and one of the dads had his hands on her knees and was loudly praying to God for his healing powers.
Now, I'm not averse to the idea of prayer, I would like to think there is a chance it could help her, I just think the busy playground is not a suitable time or place to do it so loudly and openly. It was very 'in-your-face', but is that ok? Or inappropriate?

I don't know...but did it work?

TheSinglePringle · 01/03/2012 20:15

I haven't seen anything like that so seeing it anywhere would be a big shock to me.

Can imagine kids trying this though

molepom · 01/03/2012 20:17

I would have laughed my head off.

That HAS to be a dare or something, it can not be serious.

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2012 20:18

Did she get up and run off?

yehudiwho · 01/03/2012 20:18

But did she get up and walk...

SauvignonBlanche · 01/03/2012 20:18

Was she still in the wheelchair in the afternoon? Wink

yehudiwho · 01/03/2012 20:18

X post but great minds

BarbarianMum · 01/03/2012 20:19

Well, it wouldn't bother me and I consider myself to be a fairly hard-line atheist (don't agree with role of religious institutions of running of the state and so forth).

The guy in the High Street waving the sign that says if I don't repent, I'll be damned I find rather more offensive.

LineRunner · 01/03/2012 20:20

Oh FFS.

One out of ten. If that.

hocuspontas · 01/03/2012 20:21

Was the mum embarrassed?

sodapops · 01/03/2012 20:21

As someone who is in chronic pain all the time, I can completely understand why she did it and I wouldn't give a flying fig about what any one else thought TBH.

If I thought that showing my fanjo to the moon would stop the pain I'd do it TBH!

YABU.

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2012 20:23

This AIBU has it all.

School gate Mums
Religion
Disability
Innappropriate Dad

Psammead · 01/03/2012 20:28

She was probably faking it to get benefits.

And that, is what we call Bingo, fellow players...

Confused
Beejayel · 01/03/2012 20:40

Oh, come on, it's true! There were some funny looks between a lot of the other parents, it isn't the praying and healing hands bit that bothers me, it was the doing it in the school playground.
Sodapops, if you thought it would maybe work, I'd understand you flashing to the moon, but if you did it in front of the reception class I'd certainly think you were BU.

Beejayel · 01/03/2012 20:42

Hocus, no, she didn't appear to be embarrassed, her head was bowed in joint prayer.

Erm... no, no miraculous recovery I'm afraid.

Did she ram the sanctimonious git with her wheels?

joanofarchitrave · 01/03/2012 20:46

I think YANBU, though the pray-er was acting inappropriately, not the prayee. Why the hell should she care - but for the pray-er, either praying for her at home, and/or without her knowledge should work just as well, or he's basically the same sort of exhibitionist as that David Blaine chappy.

Tomorrow, for fair and equal offensiveness, why not draw a pentangle on the school playground, kindle some unearthly fire and invoke Satan on the lady's behalf? Equally inappropriate IMO.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 01/03/2012 20:46

Why did she need to have her trousers rolled up? Confused

Surely magical healing powers can penetrate a bit of material?

TheCrackFox · 01/03/2012 20:51

I need to know if she has a plasma screen TV before I can really judge decide.

Psammead · 01/03/2012 20:52

Well, if it's true it's utterly extraordinary and YANBU.

troisgarcons · 01/03/2012 20:53

is it any different to someone crossing themself?

No harm done. You just showed your intollerance of others beliefs, which weren;t shoved down your throat - as do all the thread sniggerers

Whatmeworry · 01/03/2012 20:54

C'mon, this was a joke way back when I was at school, the punchline is the wheelchair gets new wheels.

Beejayel · 01/03/2012 20:54

That's how I feel Joanofarchitrave, I don't object to faith in prayer, I pray for people all the time, silent, private prayers.

I'm not sure I'm quite brave enough to go with Satan and pentangles... shit me.

LineRunner · 01/03/2012 20:55

Is it a freemason thing?

Hebiegebies · 01/03/2012 21:04

YABU
I can think of more private places, but why can't kids and patents see a woman being prayed for?
