It doesn't make it all cool and edgy .

Awaits a flaming Grin

It would be kind of cool if indie schools had a uniform of DM's and stripy tights, taught a curriculum based around obscure guitar bands and their lyrics and served snakebite and black for lunch.

i have deja vu...

AmIthatbad · 01/03/2012 20:03

Hullugully and Turniphead, thanks for the explanation. I've only heard people talk about state school or private school, but I always wondered what made a private school "public".

Lionelblairs · 01/03/2012 20:05

Just remember indie parents

Be reem

TunipTheVegemal · 01/03/2012 20:06

It irritates me slightly but not as much as it irritates me hearing local parents talk about their child having passed the scholarship to the grammar school.
It has not been a grammar school for decades and they didn't pass the scholarship, they passed the entrance exam and you wrote an enormous cheque! If it was a grammar MY children would stand a chance of going to it

Lionelblairs · 01/03/2012 20:06

And yes I'm sure I've read thus thread before...

TunipTheVegemal · 01/03/2012 20:08

Unquiet Dad used to talk about it. He also had a chip on his shoulder about hated 'indie' schools.

SunflowersSmile · 01/03/2012 20:14

If you know any Australians you will know they stick ie /y on everything -kindy, barbie. tinnie etc, etc... it's like a baby language and I would put 'Indie' in that category!

nokissymum · 01/03/2012 20:18

alistron1 "It would be kind of cool if indie schools had a uniform of DM's and stripy tights, taught a curriculum based around obscure guitar bands and their lyrics and served snakebite and black for lunch"

Oh stop! Your humour is killing me! Hmm

alistron1 · 01/03/2012 20:40

I weren't joking.

blushingcrow · 01/03/2012 20:44

I've only ever seen 'indie' written on MN. I've never heard it said in RL.

Alistron - I would love that. I would pay a fiver a week for it! Imagine the superior music knowledge that would be instilled on those young minds, the appreciation of the nuances of I am the Resurrection, music festival etiquette... Grin

DriverDan · 01/03/2012 23:32

I always wonder on these threads what people say instead of 'uni'. Do you always say 'university' or do you say 'college'....I go to university at the moment, so will usually say 'uni' to refer to it quickly, college seems weird because that's where I went last year when I was at an FE college...Sorry for the totally pointless hijack!

YANBU on the 'indie' school, sounds like they're trying to make it sound hip!

HandMadeTail · 01/03/2012 23:37

Private school sounds "posher" than independent school to me.

HandMadeTail · 01/03/2012 23:39

Incidentally, I'm Australian. (or is that Aussie?)

FilterCoffee · 01/03/2012 23:39

YANBU, I agree with you OP.

callmemrs · 02/03/2012 07:03

Yanbu. It's a term usually used by parents who want it to seem cool and edgy.

It's 'posh school' don't ya know

Chandon · 02/03/2012 07:13

I have never heard anyone talk about "indie" schools, and my DC go to one! It is an MN thing IMO.

Chandon · 02/03/2012 07:13

If I hear "Indie" I think of Indiana Jones btw

Ample · 02/03/2012 07:17

I don't think I would ever say, indie or comp, but depends what you are familiar with?

For me 'uni' is/was varsity
And 'comp' is high school

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 02/03/2012 07:18

It's a silly word, yep.

nooka · 02/03/2012 07:22

I went to a school that was independent of the state (I'm assuming that's what 'indie' is referring to in this context). It was a GPDST school and I'd generally say it was a private school (although that's a bit of a weird term - I'm now imagining shy and retiring schools) but I suspect it might referred to now as 'indie'. I went to a public school for sixth form (I doubt that would be 'indie' would it?) dh got a scholarship to a minor public school (would now be also 'indie' too?) Our children go to a state run school, but where we live now that is much the norm that I wouldn't be mentioning it (the only non state schools here are highly religious).

To be honest like alistron, 'indie' to me is a type of music and a particular look.
