to be fuming at my Housing Association and also worried at this rise in my rent

am in housing association and have been for nearly 3 years

the rent has gone up very slightly every year i have been here, which is fair enough, but only by about a quid a week which over the year is about £4 or £5 a month, not really noticeable.

this year, we just got a letter to say that its going up £5 a WEEK Shock

may not sound a lot to many of you but it IS a lot to me. and i actually think that is a big rise, i worked out i will have to work a day to earn what the extra rents going to be.

i am fuming

and wtf is going to happen next year, will the same thing happen again? we are already being squeezed to breaking point with the cost of everything else. don't get me wrong, i am very GRATEFUL to be in a HA house as the security is fantastic, but i am worried the rents heading towards the rip off territory of private rentals :(

do they not see that all this will do is INCREASE the benefits bill as those on benefits will get it paid for them anyway and those that work on low wages will need housing benefit top ups to be able to afford the rent. the state of this country is beyond a joke.

£20 per month isn't that much in comparison with how much of a hike there is each year on private rentals, sometimes as much of an increase as £100 per month. I do see why you are annoyed though

LilacWaltz · 01/03/2012 15:44

Yes mine has gone up£3 a week too

It's to do with 'affordable rent' I think

TheSinglePringle · 01/03/2012 15:45

Mines up £8.50 a week.

LilacWaltz · 01/03/2012 15:46

As standard, mine has gone up to £105 a week now , BUT I'm moving out of here in 2 weeks and my house is currently in the bidding system and rent will be £136 a week for new tenants as it's advertised now as affordable housing.

This is a 3 bed semi and my new house is a brand new 5 bed house also at £136 a week Confused

PeppyNephrine · 01/03/2012 15:47

Rents go up. Presumably you pay less than market value, you can't expect them to stay the same as well.

mummytasha11 · 01/03/2012 15:47

I'm also with a HA and ours has gone up by £5 a week too! It's outrageous...supposed to be social housing and affordable yet it's nearly on par with private rent!

MistyMountainHop · 01/03/2012 15:50

It's to do with 'affordable rent' I think

:o lol how do they work THAT one out ! making it more UNaffordable.
and what area are you in if you don't mind me asking? i am in a shitty area of the midlands

and as for the poster whose rents gone up by £8 a week, disgusting

cunts

Synyster · 01/03/2012 15:52

yanbu ours has gone up at about that.
still better than private, but as most people in HA are there for a reason it seems hard

CoffeeDog · 01/03/2012 15:53

My rent has gone up 50 a month (private ) we had 10 days notice.....

950 for a small 2 bed flat Shock no chance of saving for a deposit to move.

LilacWaltz · 01/03/2012 15:55

Isn't it to bring it more in line with other rents?

I'm Bedfordshire

MistyMountainHop · 01/03/2012 15:59

ffs

private rents need to come DOWN

not HA rents go UP :(

PeppyNephrine · 01/03/2012 16:01

everything goes UP. Thats inflation for you.

TheSinglePringle · 01/03/2012 16:02

I got the letter yesturday saying its gone up by that much.

Says it uses the value of your home and the number of bedrooms it has.

Synyster · 01/03/2012 16:03

i am with you op

FredFredGeorge · 01/03/2012 16:08

CoffeeDog What sort of weird contract do you have that lets a landlord change the rent on 10 days notice? Seems rather unusual.

RatherBeACyborg · 01/03/2012 16:17

Well it is worked out on a formula devised by the regulating authority. And that sometimes means rents can go down as well. It isn't just to piss you off. And the rental income is what pays for the maintenance and repairs. I do understand that any increase is frustrating but EVERYTHING is going up at the minute.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 01/03/2012 16:19

Everything has gone up recently, it is true that nearly everyone is feeling the pinch in one way or another. Its not just rent, it's bills, food, petrol, everything. It's pants.

Blimey! How can you afford 2 rents? That's a lot!

manticlimactic · 01/03/2012 19:47

Mines gone up by £5 too but it's always gone up by £3-5 a week every year. It's still cheaper than private rentals round by me.

CreamolaFoamless · 01/03/2012 20:12

£5 a week can be a big deal depending on circumstances however I still think it's good that there is council housing and local association housing.

I really get scared for my children as things seem to be increasing fast outline off any potential wage/salary increases

Private rentals are too high

Exactly. The amounts I read here are eye watering - and yes people have to pay them if thats what private landlords want to charge. But this does not mean social housing rentals should be as high.

It wont be long before this thread turns into a bit of a fight and someone comes along saying you should be grateful living in your social housing and paying peanuts in rent compared to private rentals mind you.
