Sat having a coffee with two close friends and the conversation switches to money, I mention things are better now I work pt as I get paid middle of month so it "tops up" our bank account until dh gets paid.

Turns out they both feel the same about there tax credits as they both get paid start of the month when there dh's do.

Turns out they both shave thousands of p60's to claim more money!

Seemingly it's easy and everyone does it!!

Ffs how the hell is this possible? I would imagine what they get is a drop in the ocean to the millions that must be claimed everyyear by people who are not entitled.

Is this not the obvious solution to saving the government money, either employ people to check tax credit claims againsed p60s or scrap tax credits and just lower how much we pay tax?

I agree it's none of my business but I am still pissed off.

Sarcalogos · 01/03/2012 10:14

Eh?

RachelWalsh · 01/03/2012 10:16

They shave thousands of P60s? I don't get it.

scuzy · 01/03/2012 10:17

They get there p60 at the end of the year and it says for example £34000 they tell tax credits it says £26000

OP posts:
D0oinMeCleanin · 01/03/2012 10:18

Perhaps they use the Nikes to shave the P60s?

LentillyFart · 01/03/2012 10:18

And so it starts..........

imnotmymum · 01/03/2012 10:19

confused about nikes thought I wore the wrong trainers ??? Is self employed is easy to shave 1000s off

JarethTheGoblinKing · 01/03/2012 10:20
Confused

have the madness hamsters invaded again?

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 01/03/2012 10:20

Actually I know a few self employed people that do this......can't say I agree with it but meh, nothing to do with me.

And what in the holy chuff does the random 'nike' mean ?

desperatenotstupid · 01/03/2012 10:20

well, if they tell tax credits they get £26,000 they wont be entitled to anything anyway. I think its better to just mind ones own business really - saves you getting so worked up that you can't type

LilacWaltz · 01/03/2012 10:21

But what TV do they have?

TotemPole · 01/03/2012 10:21

Their => belongs to them
There => over there.

fudgywudgy · 01/03/2012 10:21

Nike in the title was supposed to be "not", bit obvious I thought.

OP posts:
scuzy · 01/03/2012 10:22

ah see I get it now ... you shave your P60s so they look smaller and then you can afford to buy Nikes! duh!

Rikalaily · 01/03/2012 10:23

It is easy to do, they just renew thier claim over the phone and lie about the amount on the P60... But they will be caught out eventually because the IR do random checks on claims all the time, they just write and tell you they are going to do it and then they check out all the info that the IR hold on you to make sure your income matches what you have declared, if you have been overpaid they send you a bill for what is owed. They could be looking at a debt of tens of thousands if they have done it over a long time.

They also do a full check if your claim ends for any reason, they did this when ex and I seperated.

Very silly.

desperatenotstupid · 01/03/2012 10:23

apocalypse, my DP is self employed, i do his tax return, its HMRC that check that, it is the HMRC that do the tax credits, i know its not the same department but not impossible to check i daresay. I would never tell them a lie. I base the years income on an estimate that is based on the year before, its a pants system because the year previous to last tax year was pants so we got high tax credits, last year was better so we will have been overpaid, but believe me, we will have to pay that all back :(

RachelWalsh · 01/03/2012 10:23

If your friends are defrauding the tax credits system then report them.

Why should tax credits for those who are not committing fraud be withdrawn because of people like your imaginary friends?

D0oinMeCleanin · 01/03/2012 10:23

It would be easier to ge the goat to eat the P60s, no? Have your friends fiddled the tax payer out of a goat yet, OP? It would be more effective than shaving P60s.

scuzy · 01/03/2012 10:25

then you have to look after a goat though, I recommend trading in the Nikes and getting an Aldo shredder.

scuzy · 01/03/2012 10:26
