to buy maternity clothes?

Even though I am only 7 weeks pregnant (will be 8 on saturday).

I know I am really- it is still early days. Although we did have a scan yesterday and every thing is looking good so far I know things could still go wrong.

I am having to sit on my hands though to keep myself from ordering maternity clothes for me and baby-gros for the baby!

If you need to wear them now, go ahead and buy them. In my first pregnancy I needed bigger jeans by 8 weeks (because I ate too much Blush), so rather than buy the next size up, I went into maternity jeans.

In my second pregnancy, I was much more restrained and stayed out of maternity wear until 15 weeks!

You are excited, congratulations on your little one to be, but it may be a waste of money as not everyone needs maternity clothes

TroublesomeEx · 01/03/2012 09:13

Don 't buy them until you need them.

I've had 2 pregnancies and didn't need maternity clothes during either.

So many tunic-y tops and jersey dresses will work just as well and you can still wear them afterwards.

I had a completely flat stomach when I became pregnant with DS and I was desperate to have a baby bump! After my second pregnancy I returned to work following maternity leave and some people (not my imm ediate colleagues obviously!) hadn't even realised I was pregnant!

Congratulations by the way.

Maternity clothes are very comfy though! :D
And if you're going to get them anyway, you might as well get them early, and get lots of wear out of them...

whyme2 · 01/03/2012 09:20

ah but you will be sick of the sight of them by the time you get to nine months plus and desperate to wear anything but.

elliemay80 · 01/03/2012 09:25

I'm 13 weeks and bought a maternity top before I was pregnant! We had just started trying though and I thought it would be good luck. Plus it was nearly new Laura Ashley for £2 in a charity shop! Found out I was pregnant the following week! Bought a few other tops at about 7/ 8 weeks (again charity shop bargains) and now at 13 weeks have bought maternity jeans (on sale and a great fit) and a lovely Topshop maternity pencil skirt.

Will buy a couple of mat vests and that's it. Have loads of empire line tops to layer over the vests, roomy dresses and low cut jeans so will manage with those over the summer when I will need them. Oh bought some H&M leggings at about 8 weeks (after early scan) too but have yet to wear any of my mat clothes. Tummy slowly beginning to show though...

Try and buy bigger 'normal' clothes or ones that can accommodate a growing bump. DP have some fab dresses and smock tops are amazing! I only bought 2 pairs of jeans from eBay, brand new £5 each! Or, the shops have got a lot of sales on ATM so have a browse and get excited/depressed at the lack of choice of clothes for possibly 7 months! FWIW, I bought a maternity dress before I was even pregnant because it was v nice Blush

MrsCarriePooter · 01/03/2012 09:29

Congratulations and I'm glad you're so excited.

Having said that I wouldn't buy maternity clothes unless you're already bulging out of your existing clothes - the excitement pales and you'll be sick of the sight of them by the end of the pregnancy. Plus, you may find that once people know you're pregnant they will lend you theirs so you won't need to buy as much anyway.

arghmyear · 01/03/2012 09:29

If you would like to order some maternity clothes, I would go ahead. The bump may grow quickly and you may be glad of them. Alternatively, like a lot of us, you may not really need them. I've had 2 DCs and I think I bought one pair of maternity trousers and that was really it. My mum bought me a couple of tops but I could actually manage with the tops I had anyway. A friend of mine wore proper maternity clothes every day when she was pregnant apart from at the very very start. You can never tell how much space you have inside your body and how much your bump will stick out or not!

Meglet · 01/03/2012 09:33

I started wearing them at 10 weeks both times. My normal clothes were way too tight. No point in feeling squeezed into things.

I had a nice little wardrobe of them once I'd finished having kids, all got e-bayed for good money.

Aworryingtrend · 01/03/2012 09:35

Thanks so much for the replies, sounds like I have been quite restrained really by holding off so far. Eek I hadn't expected to be in maternity clothes as soon as 8 or 10 weeks! But then everyone is different, maybe I won't get bump til later. Slightly worried I won't be able to tell whent he bump arrives due to a distinctly flabby tummy as it is Hmm.

I needed maternity clothes at 18 weeks with DD, but at about 8 weeks with DS1 Blush.

With DS2, I barely needed any, I was 32 weeks before I was showing!

My friends and I (4 of us) had a maternity clothes stash - all of our stuff, kept in the loft of whoever recently sprogged. Some of that did 7 or 8 pregnancies!

Gooseysgirl · 01/03/2012 14:49

Congratulations on your pregnancy OP Smile I was very bloated by 8 weeks but managed with floaty empire line dresses over stretchy leggings. By 12 weeks I had to buy a pair of maternity jeans (topshop - baxter) but they were a godsend and did me until I was 7 months, along with cheap tops in a bigger size. The only other maternity clothes I bought were one pair each of black trousers, leggings and tights plus 3 for 2 Gap maternity tops, and a floaty black dress which did me for Christmas, birthdays and a couple if weddings. I didn't buy anything for the baby until after 20 week scan.

beezwax · 01/03/2012 16:33

OP make the most of still fitting into your normal clothes because believe me, by week 36 you will be SICK TO DEATH of maternity clothes and fucking tunics.

beezwax · 01/03/2012 16:33

Oh and congratulations of course
