To only ever send my children to my parents in their oldest and scruffiest clothes?

They slept there last night. Due to a maintenance wash dd1's spare shirt was unable to be washed on time, so I sent last years shirt instead, which is slightly greying. She also only has one jumper because she ripped her two cardigans and I have not gotten round to sewing them yet, so she asked my mum to wash her jumper, like I usually do.

I was surprised to see my mum in the school yard at pick up time. She had a pack of new shirts for dd1 and money to buy her a new school sweater.

They were unimpressed at her lack of extra jumpers and bright white shirts. Something had to be done. They considered phoning DH to locate clean uniform but they weren't sure that a) dd1 had more uniform and b) DH would know where it is kept (I was at work) Instead they decided they would just go to Tesco for new shirts and buy her a new jumper today.

So WIBU to dig out their scruffiest PJs and shoes next week? They could do with some new PJs and dd2 needs new shoes.

Excellent idea D0inMeCleanin, and maybe put them in their old, outgrown coats too ...??

(My mum would have done the same thing as yours did btw Smile )

YANBU!!

Enoughs enough, it's been all over mn today wat on earth is a maintenance wash???

Oh and Yabu, send your kids to school in clean/ right coloured uniform unless you really can't afford it, in which case ask the school office about a uniform grant.

*what Blush

Sarcalogos - the OP was joking!

Sarcalogos · 29/02/2012 17:06

I know, but I still want to know what a maintenance wash is....

Littlepurpleprincess · 29/02/2012 17:08

LOL! PIL are like this. DS sleeps at their house most friday nights, and they tend to pick him up straight from school. He nearly always comes back saturday with the hems of his trousers mended because they "were really tatty". I have said that I only spend £3 on his ASDA trousers and they are mostly worn for rough and tumble in the school play ground but MIL insists.

I take it as it intended. A kind gesture, trying to help out and contribute. Smile and say thanks but don't feel you have to justify yourself. Kids are scruffy!

I do mine by filling the soap dispenser drawer with a jif lemon and put it in it's highest setting with nothing in the drum. It cleans off all the old soap powder and keeps it smelling fresh.

We do one once a week after washing dog bedding but unless you have stinky dgs like me once a month is ample. Some people use white vinegar instead of lemon juice.

Her jumper is the right colour. The shirt was only slightly greying. Had not been packed on top of dd2's sparkling white polo shirt it would not have been noticed. Dd2 has more tops because she will wear anything so her clothes are cheaper. Dd1 is limited to two shirts to be washed on alternate days.

Blimey mn frightens me sometimes.

I now think Yabu for forcing yourself to do that much washing, I'd save money on the electric and buy more nice cheap supermarket shirts.

My DH and I hold down professional jobs (no one has ever commented we smell), live in work accommodation we keep very clean so we don't get kicked out and use a second hand washing machine and my parents are reasonably middle class and keep an ultra clean house. And I'm still bemused by the need to wash something that is designed to do washing.... Am I U, is it really just me?

OldGreyWiffleTest · 29/02/2012 17:25

You learned your lesson quicker than me, OP. I used to try to keep up appearances with my Ex and his (rich) parents. Consequently they never saw my son in anything other than his best clothes. Never bought him anything either.

One Winter they asked what he needed for Christmas and I asked for a new winter coat. We hung on to his too-small old coat for weeks until Christmas Day. The parcel contained 2 pairs of cord trousers. I cried buckets as just didn't have the money to buy him a new coat. I asked Ex to get my son a pair of shoes only once - he bought him a pair of plastic (red!) cheap shoes.

Sarcalogos Washing mashines do get smelly after a while and build up deposits, particularly if you do most of your washing using washing liquids at low temps.

I prefer to use powder, and sometime do a high temp wash with the machine empty. It's actually recommended by some manufacturers.

Callisto · 29/02/2012 17:57

Wow, a maintenance wash. I had no idea such things were possible or necessary.

MigGril · 29/02/2012 18:16

You probably don't need to do it if you live in a soft water area (my mum never did) but since moving to a VERY hard water area I do it every now and again (not regualy) as it removes the limescale off the eleiment in the washing machine.

Oh yes and washing at low temp makes it more necasery as they don't clean the machine as well.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 29/02/2012 18:20

Suddenly feel the need to treat my washer to good old lemon soak....never done this before, I feel ever so grown up now Grin

Sarcalogos · 29/02/2012 18:53

Callisto thank goodness I almost began to feel guilty...

We do use powder though not tablets, and that seems to be a mitigating factor, so I may get off with good behaviour if I promise to do it next week. I won't do it next week
