Why's that insensitive? Confused

TroublesomeEx · 29/02/2012 15:00

Why, what would you expect to see?

Sounds ok to me.

Why is it insensitive? Confused

startwig1982 · 29/02/2012 15:01

Iron gorge is great, as is Alton towers and I expect Coventry cathedral is very nice!

lolaflores · 29/02/2012 15:01

coventry was almost destroyed during wwii by german bombing campaign, revenge for Dresden I believe.

ViviPru · 29/02/2012 15:01

YANBU

For the love of Peace in Our Time, don't let the nice German children witness the Pleb Fest that is Alton Towers. They'll be blabbing to half of Europe about the shocking state of our nations youth.

PostBellumBugsy · 29/02/2012 15:01

Is it the Coventry Cathedral that is bothering you? Because it was destroyed in WWII?

Amykins · 29/02/2012 15:01

Coventry Cathedral was bombed badly in WW2. I really like the new one thiugh, perhaps they will too.

PatsyPlusOne · 29/02/2012 15:02

Yes, a big part of the centre of coventry was destroyed by bombing in the war. The ruined cathedral is still there next to the new cathedral.

startwig1982 · 29/02/2012 15:02

Oh ok. I doubt that will bother them or anyone else, though.

RuleBritannia · 29/02/2012 15:03

The Germans destoryed it. Let them see the new one and the remains of the old one.

lolaflores · 29/02/2012 15:03

don't mention the war Pike

startwig1982 · 29/02/2012 15:04

Grin at Lola. Just don't do a Basil Fawlty.

SummerRain · 29/02/2012 15:04

Is it because Coventry Cathedral was bombed during WWII?

Surely going to England at all is going to cause problems if they're sensitive about their nations historical indiscretions.... ditto if visiting France, Poland, Holland, etc, etc.......

PostBellumBugsy · 29/02/2012 15:05

Agree with ViviPru though! Grin

TroublesomeEx · 29/02/2012 15:05

Ah, see I was missing something really obvious!!! Grin

Mm, that might not be the most sensitive.

Although I was at the Birmingham German market in December and heard "Who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler?" being piped out from the carousel horses!

No one seemed to mind...

piprabbit · 29/02/2012 15:06

Coventry was blitzed by the Germans several times in the early part of the war, the Cathedral was destroyed in November 1940.

Dresden was blitzed towards the end of the war - 1945 (I think).

diddl · 29/02/2012 15:07

I agree OP-surely 2days with the host family is completely unnecessary?

LadyClarissaArseQuack · 29/02/2012 15:08

Coventry Cathedral was bombed and destroyed by the Germans.
Iron Gorge museum it shows how we lived in the age of Industrialisation.
Alton Towers is in Stoke on Trent.
I thought a cultural exchange was to show children life in another country.

Mrsgradgrind · 29/02/2012 15:10

I'm aware of Cov's history and don't think that is insensitive at all. I've been to the cathedral a few times and found it incredibly moving - and I'm an atheist.

mojitomania · 29/02/2012 15:11

? Grin

TroublesomeEx · 29/02/2012 15:12

Iron Bridge Gorge shows the history of our country.

Alton Towers is inexcusable!

What would you have liked to have seen?

plantsitter · 29/02/2012 15:14

My best mate from school went on the German exchange and her host's grandmother took her round Dresden, crying, and showed her all the stuff the British had bombed. She felt very uncomfortable. On the upside, she hasn't forgotten it and if you need any info about the bomb damage in Dresden, she's your woman.

startail · 29/02/2012 15:14

We took the corner of Cologne cathedral, we went there on a school trip.

I grew up near to Coventry. As a child I still remember a lot of anti-German feeling there among older people but I suspect that has died out now. To be honest I think it would have been good for me as a child to see Dresden as it would have made me understand the balance of the situation.
