if I ask my downstairs neighbour to find another window to smoke out of other than his bedroom? It drifts upwards into mine and fucking stinks?

(I can also hear him cough his lungs up every morning at 6am- yum yum- but I'll let that go Grin )

I want to ask him but then was wondering if I'm being an unreasonable twat.

Plus his girlfriend is really hard.

OP posts:
CremeEggThief · 27/02/2012 17:08

It's annoying, but there's nothing you can do about it. YWBU to complain and do you really want to get on the wrong side of the "hard girlfriend"?

nobodyspecial · 27/02/2012 17:28

YANBU. I really hate smoke. When I was pregnant with DD, I was VERY hormonal and I could smell smoke from my neighbours garden regularly during the summer. One day I got so angry (I was adamant that those few smoke particles were going to harm my baby) I shouted out the window "I DON'T KNOW WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO BLOODY SMOKE, ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING THING TO DO" and then slammed my window shut.

They carried on smoking.

So you could try asking them not to do it, or make rude comments, but they won't give up their addiction just because it annoys you.

candr · 27/02/2012 17:29

I used to smoke outside and knew it went into neighbours garden so in summer I sit as far away as possible from them as I know smoking is my choice not theirs. I just wish they were as considerate with their bikes which they 'mend' a lot and I get all the exahust fumes in my garden and house - they are big scary buggers though and not the type to take suggestions well.

Katiekitty · 27/02/2012 17:34

So, just to make sure I'm understanding this right:

Smokers - ANBU
Non-smokers - ABU

WTF? Who gave smokers the diving right to piss people off in their own homes?

Non-smokers - not pissing anyone off with their fresh air
Smokers - stinking out neighbours, who must either put up or shut up?

Sorry, have I stumbled into the 1970s or something?

Katiekitty · 27/02/2012 17:35

oops - 'diving' = 'Divine'

FFS

blushingcrow · 27/02/2012 17:37

No you have stumbled into a MN anti smoking rant ,theres usually one every couple of weeks.

Bibbo · 27/02/2012 17:43

sympathise but ywbu to confront him. He would only say, 'well shut your f-ing window then' and then his girlf would punch you

VivaLeBeaver · 27/02/2012 17:43

I don't think it would be unreasonable to ask nicely. If he's got any consideration he'll stop it.

We asked our neighbours to build a pipe to take away their kitchen extractor fan fumes as the smells were coming in our house. They did this no problem. They asked me to pick up the dog poo more frequently in my garden as they can smell it. So now I pick up every other day instead of a couple of times a week.

OrmIrian · 27/02/2012 17:43

I'm not a smoker but I think yab a little unreasonable.

But if you can always ask nicely without getting hoity and 'I know my rights' about it, it might be worth a go.

Katiekitty · 27/02/2012 17:45

OP - have you got a dog that can poo a lot?
Say, outside a certain window?

Just wondering

blushingcrow · 27/02/2012 17:48

It's illegal to not clean up after your dog , it's not illegal to smoke in your own property ,yet.

Katiekitty · 27/02/2012 17:49

Even on your own property Blushing?

In that case, I'm calling the police about a neighbour of mine

Thanks for the heads up

WorraLiberty · 27/02/2012 17:50

Oh shut the bedroom window and get over yourself

If your neighbour was cooking garlic and curry every day, that would also stink.

I was cleaning up after my dog, just not every day - plus it was in my own private garden. Hmm

Its about having consideration for others isn't it? If I'm annoying my neighbour I want him to come and tell me so I can change whatever it is (within reason). If I was the bloke smoking if I knew the smoke was annoying my neighbour I'd go and smoke out another window/in the garden.

The world would be much nicer if people tried to be helpful to others. Just because somethings not illegal doesn't mean its not annoying. Yes he doesn't have to stop but if he's asked nicely he may do.

NoDontLickThat · 27/02/2012 17:59

I would really hate that so I don't think YABU for wanting him to smoke somewhere else. Whether you should ask him or not depends on how well you get on I think though.

WorraLiberty · 27/02/2012 18:01

She can always open another window

It mightn't be so bad if it was the lounge, but it's only the bedroom.

If she lived on a main road she'd have more to worry about than a bit of smoke from a tiny cigarette that's going to basically disappear into the air as it travels upwards.

And I say that as a non smoker!

NoDontLickThat · 27/02/2012 18:03

OP I think it's time to start a new hobby - keeping rotten fish hanging from outside your bedroom window :o

VivaLeBeaver · 27/02/2012 18:05

Seeing as its at 6:00am maybe, just maybe she wants her bedroom window open overnight as otherwise she'd be too hot?

QuietOhSoQuiet · 27/02/2012 18:10

Actually this is one of the reasons I quit a little while ago.I only ever smoked in the back garden but was acutely aware of the fact we have tiny gardens, the neighbours have their windows open and I felt horrible and guilty every time I lit up (even though I did go to the end of the garden the smoke still drifts)not that they even appear to have been bothered.

squeakytoy · 27/02/2012 18:32

I am a smoker, but I dont think you are being unreasonable at all if you are a non-smoker.

my stepdaughter's partner use to smoke spliffs outside our house and the stench of that would drift in to the house, and I hate the smell as it makes me feel ill, so he got told if he carried on I would chuck a bucket of water over him Grin

I would probably be passive aggressive and slam the window shut very loudly, or develop an interest in window boxes and water it every time he lights up.. Grin

trumpeter · 27/02/2012 19:16

Pretty sure garlic and curry aren't carcinogens.

UserNameNotAvailable · 27/02/2012 19:35

Yanbu, if you wanted to inhale the horrible stuff

UserNameNotAvailable · 27/02/2012 19:36

Sorry hit Post, stupid iPhone!
-you'd smoke yourself
