Friend's Birthday Present

I have a friend, who I am very close to, and who for christmas was most insistent that we buy each other gifts. I put a lot of effort into my gift for this friend, knowing she LOVED films, and got her a three month film subscription, which runs from 25/12 to 25/13, and some film related bits e.g. a popcorn maker, all of which she said she loved.

However, I've now found out that she has not bothered to order any films from this subscription. NOT ONE. I have reminded her several times, and her not ordering is not lack of time, she has no dc and is always complaining she's bored etc.

Its her birthday at the end of next month, WIBU not to get her anything as she clearly doesn't value it?

Meh

lisaro · 27/02/2012 15:38

Runs from when to when? That makes no sense whatsoever.,

carbslover · 27/02/2012 15:46

Sorry runs from 25th december to the 25th march

She still has a whole month to order films from it then

lisaro · 27/02/2012 15:49

I'd get her something of the same value she gets you. It sounds a lovely present, very thoughtful, but just don't make as much effort next time.

TheProvincialLady · 27/02/2012 15:51

Sorry but your present, however much thought you put into it, missed the mark. You can't blame her for that and to punish by witholding a birthday present is just craziness. You are investing far too much emotion in this. You buy someone a present and then they do what they like with it.

PeppaTwig · 27/02/2012 15:54

I'd probably be annoyed by this too but I dont think there's much you can do

I have not had any time since Xmas to even think about ordering and watching films.. 3 months is a short time space too, maybe she thinks it is for a year if she hasnt looked at it properly.. or she thinks it was one of those "lovefilm" specials that means it is going to cost her money too..

MrsKittyFane · 27/02/2012 16:04

Sorry OP but I would be the same as your friend :( 3 months wizard by and I have only just watched (this weekend) a DVD I was given at Christmas. No time.
It's a shame but live and learn.

MrsKittyFane · 27/02/2012 16:04

Has wizzed not wizard!

If it's a LoveFilm trial (even if it's pre-paid) you have to put your bank details in to activate it so maybe she's scared she'll forget and get charged. I don't think it's worth worrying over tbh.

LizzieMo · 27/02/2012 16:29

How did you find out she has not ordered? I am intrigued- did she tell you herself?

She was most insistent that we give each other gifts. Hmm I can't even imagine having that conversation with anyone. You give someone a gift if you feel so inclined, and most people don't feel the need to ensure it'll be reciprocated before they bother. I'd back right off, but not because she didn't like the films.

troisgarcons · 27/02/2012 17:40

Why don't you organise a girly night in and watch some films?

However, I really CBA with unneccessary Christmas and birthday presents - it's hard enough buying for those you have to buy for - let alone random hangers on.

Melpomene · 27/02/2012 18:20

Are you sure she didn't already have a DVD subscription?

sayithowitis · 27/02/2012 18:36

Somebody bought me something like this a couple of years ago. initially, it sounded wonderful. But, after having to give my card details in order to activate it, then spending forever making up my list of films, ia began to be a bit of a faff to be honest. Coupled with the fact that although I was able to make a list of 20 films, the company wouldn't guarantee that I would actually get any of my 20 choices and 'suggested' that I choose another 20 'back up' films. I think I actually saw about three of my first choice films. Thanks to the Royal Mail it was also something of a rush to have to watch all the films before the subscription ended.

I think though, that the 3 months/6 months subscription, only began when I actually activated it, though I think it had to be activated within a certain time of the original purchase.

Personally, I would never buy one of these, because although there is clearly a lot of thought behind it, the reality is somewhat different.

I would put it down to experience, but I wouldn't get hacked off with your friend.

Agree LoveFilm is pants. They had very few up to date titles available when I tried it. If she's into films, she's probably seen most of the decent ones they have to offer; I'm not that on the pulse, & I had.

rhondajean · 27/02/2012 20:07

I've had a lovefilm film sitting here since just after Xmas and I pay for them myself....
