no parent would sell a carseat that has been in an accident

This has always puzzled me.

no parent would put at risk another child for a sake of a few pounds ( would they)

I dunno, with the economy as bad as it is, I wouldn't put it past some people. Also people might look at the carseat and think 'well it doesn't look damaged' but not understand that it's been weakened and won't be safe for someone else.

YABU. Would you really trust them not to?
Money does strange things to people.

TheSinglePringle · 26/02/2012 22:40

Some people would I guess. I wouldn't but then again I wouldn't sell one that had been in a accident I would just throw it out.

McHappyPants2012 · 26/02/2012 22:42

I wouldn't buy a second hand carseat and wouldn't want anybody else to, it just a question

No parent would not use a carseat at all (they do)
No parent would drive dangerously with DC in the car (they do)
I'd imagine plenty of parents would sell a damaged car seat.

griphook · 26/02/2012 22:43

i really think people would, there are some really selfish people out there who are only interested in themselves.

I was shocked the other day when a car drove past me with a tiny baby sat on someone lap in the back being fed a bottle next to a car seat.

I also thibk that not everyone realises how dangerous a car seat in a accident can be.

Yes they would, for a variety of reasons.

Iggly · 26/02/2012 22:50

I was offered a carseat which I knew had been in an accident. The mum thought it was fine as she'd had it checked over but I turned it down. She kept using it for her DD. I was Hmm especially as the car was a write off!!

misslinnet · 26/02/2012 23:46

Some people might think a car seat that had been in an accident was still fine to use if it looked superficially okay. Or they might not care, so long as it wasn't their child in it.

I wouldn't buy a second hand car seat just in case it had been in an accident that the seller had "forgotten" to mention.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 26/02/2012 23:59

Some people would because it looks ok but also I have met plenty people that don't even realise that after an accident you are supposed to replace them.
And for example my mil and sil don't actually get what car seats are actually for no matter how much I try and explain. They seem them more as something that restrains the child in the car to stop them moving about rather than something that could actually save the child in an accident so don't see why I spent as much as I did on a researched safe car seat rather than a£30 from Argos jobby

WilsonFrickett · 27/02/2012 00:02

I have known a couple of people who have been in a shunt and not realised they should replace their car seat. Stands to reason therefore that they may have tried to sell said car seats, if they hadnt been put right.

Its not always people being horrible, they genuinely don't know. Which is what I'd never buy a second-hand seat.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/02/2012 00:03

Of course they would. Some people would sell their Granny if they could get a pound for her!

People steal, murder, rape, abuse children - many of them are parents - why do you think they wouldn't sell a car seat??

... and that's without the people who are just plain dim who think if it looks fine after an accident, it is fine.

MrsCrafty · 27/02/2012 00:05

It's only polystyrene. Personally, I wouldn't buy an old one but if your child was involved in an accident that actually broke the polystyrene, would you sell it? I don't know many Mums who would.

nerftoys · 27/02/2012 00:05

A lot of people think most safety advice is nonsense. Or they don't care.

PeneloPeePitstop · 27/02/2012 00:12

I rear ended someone at 27mph.
Car seat appeared fine but I rang Britax who said it was far from fine and needed instant disposal. Which I did immediately.

Solo · 27/02/2012 00:12

I sold two car seats quite recently and I definitely wouldn't have sold them on if they'd been involved in an accident. I even made a point of taking off the covers to show the polystyrene was intact and that they were in good condition all round.

McHappyPants2012 · 27/02/2012 00:26

ok just did alittle reasearch and the only way to tell if a carseat is safe is to put it through the tests, in which would destroy the car seat

OP posts:
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/02/2012 00:38

You didn't need to do research - you could have just asked and we would have told you. It's common knowledge :)

BagofHolly · 27/02/2012 04:26

I was looking for a particular seat and saw one for sale on eBay, with a huge chunk of the polystyrene on one side hanging off! No mention of how it got like that, but a note saying that this "in no way affected the seat's performance." WTF?

RealLifeIsForWimps · 27/02/2012 04:35

I do find it slightly convenient that the car seat manufacturers, who allegedly fling these things at walls at 160mph to safety test consider you should replace it if you have a minor shunt. i imagine that a second hand trade in car seats does them few favours. Just a thought.

RealLifeIsForWimps · 27/02/2012 04:42

Put it another way, if a car seat was seriously weakened/damaged in a fender bender which did not activate the airbags and after which the vehicle was driveable, do you think it would have passed the crash test dummy test in the first place?

stuffthenonsense · 27/02/2012 05:02

Carseats are only 'guaranteed' tested at 30mph, i was shocked, but apparently it is industry standard, i have heard from a reliable source, even if they test at higher speeds, they are not allowed to publish it as a marketing point.
I would never sell on my carseat, accident or not, i look at it as an investment for my childs safety and then it will be binned (can these things be recycled?) In the same way i wouldnt sell their old shoes.

biddysmama · 27/02/2012 09:18

the woman next door to me puts her 2 year old in a bucket seat thats been turned round, some people dont care about the safety of their own children, never mind someone elses..
