to want to buy some non-pink stuff for my baby daughter?

An unashamed bid for lots of replies by putting this on AIBU...hope that's OK...because I don't think IABU, at all, really. Anyway, I have a little baby daughter. She gets dressed in pink almost every day, because she's been given loads and loads of pink clothes by our friends and family. A combination of not wanting to offend the givers, laziness and stinginess has led me to just accept this. BUT we went to a little girl's birthday party today, where there were about 20 identical pink children - this, combined with the fact that I am currently reading "Delusions of Gender", has freaked me out a bit. So I'd like to buy some nice, not too expensive, non-pink girls' clothes please - any recommendations??

You can always dye pink clothes - we did this after a relative went absolutely pink mad and we were gifted a friends DD out grown clothes which were all pink.

We did dark blue via the washing machine and the bulk of them came out acceptable and a very noticeable few came out looking better. The friend who gifted the clothes asked where we had got some of those ones from as she loved them.

Non-pink clothes are easy to find if you are determined enough. But shoes are a different kettle of fish. Clarks, in particular, often only have foul pink shoes in dd's size. V irritating that they have a much better choice for boys.

DD wears quite a lot of navy, grey and green stuff. I find Debenhams and Gap good and also Boden.

Oh yes, I forgot Next. They have some groovy unisex stuff in at the mo which is grey, white and acid yellow or rainbow stripes and there's plenty of non-stereotypical stuff in the gendered sections too. In fact, their kids clothes are much better than the adult clothes!

I dressed my baby dd in blue dresses and got told what a lovely boy she was. Ds has pink polo shirts and confuses everyone too. Just go shopping and you will find loads of brilliant stuff.

Eglu · 26/02/2012 20:43

It is much easier to find girls clothes in non pink than boys clothes in non sludge, that is for sure.

GingerWrath · 26/02/2012 20:43

My Dd has quite a few 'boy's' clothes. She loves her black AC/DC t shirt, GEORGE @ ASDA is good for those sorts of things.

theDevilHasTheBestMNNames · 26/02/2012 20:43

Scarletbanner have you tried an independent shop stocking Clarks and others?

I've always managed to get blue or red or dark purple shoes for DDs without any bother. Pink shoes don't ware well - blues tend to ware better without being school black - I say that and out come a wide selection of non pink shoes but we do us an independent shop.

lovelyredwine · 26/02/2012 20:43

In response to everyone who is struggling with non pink shoes- try livie and Luca, vivobarefoot or bobux - all online. In fact look at bambino goodies website for all sorts of excellent stuff.

FilterCoffee · 26/02/2012 20:49

YANBU. Try eBay, and narrow your search by colour!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 26/02/2012 20:51

Livie and Luca for different coloured shoes and also Zara.

LydiaWickham · 26/02/2012 20:54

I have a boy, but i hate the 'blue for boys, pink for girls' crap, there's a little girl from our NCT group who I have only seen in pink once (in a dress granny had bought and granny was staying).

this is lovely

LetsKateWin · 26/02/2012 20:54

I just spent a small fortune on a pair if shoes for DD because I didn't want pink. I nearly lost one today. Luckily a very kind lady ran after me a handed me the shoe.

Scorpette · 26/02/2012 20:55

Eglu, ain't that the truth Sad DS is 9 months now and I've had no problem finding plenty of stuff for little baby boys that's great but I am currently trying to buy his 1yr+ stuff in advance but am finding very little that doesn't make me sigh in despair or do a little sick in my mouth. Checked shirts are the work of the devil, I tells ye.

Sorry to hijack. As you were, mothers of DDs Grin

Scarletbanner · 26/02/2012 20:56

Ooh, Livie and Luca is lovely. We usually end up with ecco for dd, but it's nice to see other things too.

Mrsjay · 26/02/2012 20:57

YANBU at all when they are newborn they do get alot of pink but i dont really like pink ,im not very girly so i went and bought new clothes , but my mum insisted the pinker the frillier the better ,

Eglu · 26/02/2012 20:57

Scorpetter H&M and Zara are good for boys. My boys have had lovely red, orange, green trousers. Nice and bright.

Eglu · 26/02/2012 20:58

Pretty dress Lydia. When you see the lovely bright colours like that and some of the Boden stuff you really wonder why anybody would choose the boring pink, pink, pink look.

Francagoestohollywood · 26/02/2012 21:00

H&M, Du Pareil Au Meme, Zara.
My fav is: www.nordickids.co.uk good with the sales!

Get some inspiration from Elias and Grace, Bonton and look for cheaper versions!

PenguinArmy · 26/02/2012 21:02

Yes Next have some yellow and blue stuff in atm

Also asda does in their 9 months-4 years, although I had to order them online as store had run out. I got this and a lovely blue red dress that has sold out online now as well.

H&M clothes last really well, not only is DD a slow grower so in clothes ages anyway but I am still keeping them to pass onto DS.

starkadder · 26/02/2012 21:09

ooh that is very nice, penguin.

I have that too PenguinArmy for dd2 and dd3 Grin, I always get quite a few top and leggings sets from Asda, they are doing a nice red leggings, navy top one at the minute as well.

H&M are also doing a range of canvas trainer shoes, pull ons with faux laces in a range of about 6 colours - the green ones are lovely and according to dd1 and dd2 very comfy!

Jennyrosity · 26/02/2012 21:30

See, I would love to dress my DD in pretty, pastel, sugar almond shades - I think she'd look gorgeous in lemon or lilac - but they seem to have been pushed out in favour if pink.

I don't object to pink, for boys or girls (DD has her daddy's dark colouring and he looks great in pink) but would like more variety.

Whenever I leave my mum to dress DD, she ends up looking like a marshmallow.

Likeaheadlesschicken · 26/02/2012 21:33

I know exactly what you mean, amongst the sea of pink M&S have a really cute blue and red ladybird and strawberry range at the moment, I have stocked up for my DD.
