to think you shouldn't try to make money off your own family?

If you had a toy you no longer used because your children outgrew it and someone within the family had a child that could use the toy, would you give the toy to them or sell it to them?

We are talking about nieces and nefews as close family.

Give it of course.

I have a cousin with 3 children a lot younger than mine, I have passed to her children all sorts of toys - brio train set, scalextric, magnetix, knex, DVDs. I would not dream of asking money for them.

OhTheInsanity · 25/02/2012 18:08

No more than we have needed money but choose instead to give some pretty pricey things to family members because we knew they would like and use them. But that is what we would do, I know.

Like I said, it all evens out in the end with family.

Give. Not those of you who are skint though, obviously, you can't bring money up, so you'd have to quietly e-bay rather than charge family money.

I must hi-jack here though. I always give my/our stuff to younger Dsis's and nieces/nephews. One on my Dsisters is quite careful with money and they are definitely more than comfortable.

Anyway, another of my Dsis's gives her some baby equipment to use, which she did and then we discovered she put it on e-bay. That's not on is it?

SparkySparrow · 25/02/2012 18:12

That is exactly what my family would do Bobbly which is why I would never give them anything I could get a bit of money for. It would be on Ebay before I even left the house! :(

OhTheInsanity · 25/02/2012 18:12

Well, unless you said you wanted it back after she was done with it, then she can do what she likes with it. A gift is just that, theirs to do with as they please. No conditions.

But saying that, I have given stuff away and said if they don't think they will use it or it doesn't suit them, then let me know and I will e-bay it (it was quite pricey). But I gave them first go at it.

I don't think you should get shouty at all - and if you can afford it and you know they're struggling then you could GIVE the money if you want to help them.

Molehillmountain · 25/02/2012 18:14

I'd lend in the family if my plan was to sell. We were after dbil having children and they E bayed most of their stuff. I wouldn't have expected them to give it to us as they were quite hard up. I won't have family to hand onto so we'll be selling ours. Why should they not have the chance to recoup some costs too?

arghmyear · 25/02/2012 18:16

You give it.

If you need the money, you eBay it/carboot it to a stranger, rather than asking family for money.

Depends what the £40 toy actually is anyway. Some things hold value, some don't. You should look on eBay at completed listings and find out how much the toy is selling for. Then you will know if £25 is reasonable or not. It doesn't sound particuarly reasonable for a 2nd hand toy, but eBay will give a guide to a realistic price.

OhTheInsanity · 25/02/2012 18:26

Had a look at ebay. It's going for 10-20 pounds. (about 6 to choose from atm)

And they want 25? Hmm

I think you are being a bit rude about it, although they are obviously being optimistic if you say they are going for less than they want.

Perhaps they really do need the money, and in which case calling them tacky is quite horrid.

bemybebe · 25/02/2012 18:34

"...you are being a bit rude..."

Agree. Buy it off ebay and let it go. Do not get what the issue is.

ByTheSea · 25/02/2012 18:36

I never sell anything. I always give. But that's just me -- I'd feel awkward selling.

Floggingmolly · 25/02/2012 19:05

Give. Would not dream of charging either friends or family.

Bogoffubastard · 25/02/2012 19:07

Most likely give...I'm currently trying to give 'D'H away because he's an arse Grin no one wants him though Sad don't blame them
