Staying with a family member for a week to get PHD work done. Drove down Monday, did 4 solid 15 hour days, DS now here too after lovely DH bought him down on Thurs. Due to drive back tomo. Aunt having an absolute ball playing with and looking after DS.

Was planning in finishing up a few bits today and then playing with DS an heading to park this afternoon but overnight slight disaster struck.

I have a mahoosive abbcess on my thigh, have already had 2 x course of flucloxacillin and 1 x course of plain penicillin - thought it had gone, last night it reappeared larger than ever. Been to on call doc who toted with admitting me to local hosp for IV antibios and surgical drainage but persuaded him to let me 'home' as driving back 200 miles tomo. I have a double dose of Co-Amoxiclav now.

I feel very sick, massive headache, and sore. So am in bed. But I miss DS and haven't really seen him bar bedtime and meals and an hour each morning for past few days.

AIBU to stay in bed? And any advice on getting rid of this stupid stupid vile sore infection??

Sorry but I would advise hospital for IV antibiotics and close BM monitoring.
Sorry
Sad

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 13:37

Have TCP and also thought half a cup of salt?

It's not been easy! But has been a heck of a year with several bereavements, and in ongoing terminal illness (FIL) so figuring stress may be a factor.

Also oral antibiotics may not be strong enough to deal with the infection properly which is why they keep recurring. Maybe you need one strong "hit" from IV antibiotics to deal with the problem.

GrownUp2012 · 25/02/2012 13:38

The antibiotics you are on make me feel awful too. If I were you I'd go to hospital, but I would agree on wanting it to be on my own turf, do you know what symptoms to look out for in an emergency?

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 13:39

hobnobs I know :( and am so desperate to avoid that... Even toting with heading back this afternoon so at least I'd be at my own hospital with DH on hand :(

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 25/02/2012 13:39

If you feel crap the infection is systemic so TCP and salt no real help I'm afraid.

GrownUp2012 · 25/02/2012 13:39

And is having the IV antibiotics at home a choice? I was able to convince the doctors to arrange this for me last time I had a kidney infection, so spent a day in hospital having stuff done and arranged, and then the nurse came out and administered the drip for me.

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 13:40

Unstable blood sugars, spiking fever of over 38 and redness around the area which spreads would be danger signs ... None of which I have (yet!!)

Honestly? I would nod your head in the directn of a damn fine amount of work done (I am also a phd student and mumto a 19mo and hugely envious of the hours you've managed) but admit defeat, if they admit you they will surely run tests as to why this is happening, you can't drive safely tomorrow anyway, IV ABs are staggeringly more effective than oral ABs and you can perhpa even get some more work done while wearing headphone in hospital. Your DC won't forget you, how can he? You are his mummy and no one else will replace you.

If you do want to be home then can your DH take you back and you pick your car up another day? At least while you are at your aunts you have childcare if you are admitted at home who will look after your DC?

Hope it eases gently, and you get answers, seems like you have a load on your plate and you don't need anything else!

diddl · 25/02/2012 13:42

If you go back to hospital, would your partner be able to stay & take you home, or would he have to go back for work & come back for you?

If you want to go to hospital where you live, why aren´t you on the way home now?

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 13:42

Ironically DH is a nurse and I'm a nurse lecturer so theoretically he could administer IV antibios - also have GREAT GP practice who would I think support this, think down here they don't know me or DH so may be (reasonably) unwilling.

Right, bath, clean up and then decision.

X posted somewhat.

The ABs you are on are great but I would still go for the stronger IV ones.

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 13:46

Think it's also my tendency to go 'ah it's not so bad, when on the ward I saw people with abcesses the size of watermelons!' that then makes me minimise my own risk and, also, worry that I'm 'time wasting' at A&E after seeing GP this morning. Gah.

Trust me you are not a timewaster Grin

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 15:40

Well I feel better after a bath tho no sign of easing yet - will see how next few hours go - I'm off back to bed with a 'nod in the direction' of lots of work done :)

My sister had one of these recently following bikini wax and because she then travelled back to an unhealthy tropical climate. They tried to lance it and failed then put old fashioned poultice on and it burst a day or so later. It was hen's egg size.

V painful, poor you.

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 16:33

Well the good news is the damn thang has burst.

The bad news is twofold:

  • I have a fucking great hole in my thigh
  • my aunt will need to repaint her bathroom wall

It feels a lot more comfortable. No needles needed, very gentle squeeze as I was dressing it and boom. I feel very very sick - not just from anitbiotics...!

OP posts:
FaithHopeAndKevin · 25/02/2012 16:58

Repaint the wall Shock

At least not replaster it Grin You didn't leave a dent, did you?

If I were you, I would get home ASAP, get local medical care tomorrow and get to the route of the problem.

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 17:13

No replastering needed thank god! Feels much better though sore. Nice to be chasing DS round again!

OP posts:
Eaglewings · 25/02/2012 20:16

Hope you continue to feel better and the marks come off the wall

HorribleDay · 25/02/2012 21:09

Thank you all :) if it continues to feel more comfortable I think I may just get home tomo as planned ( and to my GP on Monday...!)!
