To be shocked at the treatment of the clearly mentally disturbed

By the police? Just been watching road wars on pick tv (my guilty pleasure) and a very clearly distressed man threatening to harm himself (who had already done so) with a knife and shard of glass was getting more and more agitated about being filmed yet they kept the camera on him even when he slashed himself. After he was detained by the police they said he was charged with affray and assaulting a police officer before being sectioned.
Why punish someone for being so clearly unwell it's hardly his fault is it? And why keep filming someone clearly distressed and agitated for the sake of entertainment?
AIBU to feel sick at treating the mentally ill in this way ??

It depends on the officer. I used to work with people with these kind of issues. We had one officer interview someone after a nasty incident and I was so impressed I commented to him (with his superior in earshot) how well he had handled the situation. He was sensitive, caring and very respectful. Then, I have also seen a drunk, mentally ill man rolled off a seat onto his face by another officer. I will never forget that.

You don't need to arrest someone to get them off the street you can detain someone under the mental health act in such situations.
