to go into "work" with damp hair?

I help in a primary school 2 days a week - listening to KS1 read.

Sometimes I have been in with wet hair - shower in the morning, very little time, very thick hair and a reluctance to put the hairdryer on all conspire against being beautifully coiffed.

During half-term my very forthright Wink DSIL mentioned how unprofessional it was of a work experience teenager to turn up to the school with damp plated hair. Now she knows I do it as well on occasion the minx and obviously I knew it was a veiled dig at me as well.

So, AIBU to be not fully primped occasionally in this circumstance?

I've been known to do the school run or arrive at work with slightly damp hairBlush. I manage to sort everybody else out before we leave the house but run out time for ME!

I'm sometimes quite relieved when it's raining, I've got an excuse to have wet hair thenGrin

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 22/02/2012 14:00

My hair's always damp in the morning! I don't have a spare 30mins to dry it, so it gets the dryer for 2 mins roughly and then piled up. It's normally still a little damp in the evening when I take it down. Utterly ridiculous.

And to whomever said that wet hair smells disgusting, you're wrong! Mine smells of shampoo and conditioner, hair really isn't the same as wet dog for instance.

happyhazydaze · 22/02/2012 14:13

I go to work with wet hair at least once or twice a week, my boss has commented that I look dishevelled but I smile and ignore him, the moisture content of my hair has no bearing on my ability to do my job! If I had an important meeting or presentation I would dry it but otherwise I think its fine.

Ephiny · 22/02/2012 14:19

I'm amazed people are saying their hair takes 30 minutes or an hour to dry. I have very thick hair, medium length, and I can blowdry it in about 5 mins Confused. Well, I haven't timed myself, but I don't think it can be much more than that.

I do think wet hair has a particular smell, wet human hair isn't as bad as wet dog fur (and dogs get shampooed and conditioned too!), but a distinctive smell all the same.

MrsBeakman · 22/02/2012 14:30

I'm another one who makes sure everyone else is breakfasted/ snack/ water/uniform/kit, but doesn't leave enough time for me to dry hair/eat breakfast. I could just pretend i have been super organised and gone for an early morning swim!

TalkinPeace2 · 22/02/2012 14:37

I repeat, what are the double standards here - how many men come in with wet hair after a pre work trip to the gym?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 22/02/2012 14:39

TalkingPeace, and was that a to the floor question or to me?

If me, then none, as the only male at the school has very little hair, so it was probably dry before he stepped out the shower. Smile

TalkinPeace2 · 22/02/2012 14:43

LOL
to the floor
as in when I am arriving at my gym after dropping the kids off there are loads of blokes heading to work with wet hair
do they have the gall to comment on the ladies
or is this just a ladies judging each other thing?

Ephiny · 22/02/2012 14:46

I've never noticed a man arrive at work with wet hair - though most men have much shorter hair than most women (and some have pretty much none at all!) so the combination of a quick towel-dry and the commute to work is probably enough for it to be dry by the time they arrive.

Can't say I've often seen a woman at work with wet hair either, to be fair, though I notice some on the train/Tube sometimes.

brighthair · 22/02/2012 14:47

I have just washed my hair and now I am leaving for work so no yanbu Grin

Sarcalogos · 22/02/2012 14:56

My husband never dries his hair. But the it is so short it s dry by the time he's got dressed anyway...

I don't really think double standard applies here.

MummytoKatie · 22/02/2012 15:02

I cycle to work. I wear a helmet so can't wear a hood. It rains a lot in the UK. Do the maths.

stealthsquiggle · 22/02/2012 15:13

only on MN have I every heard of wet hair smelling.

If I didn't have such a long drive, my hair would always be wet when I got to work. If I put it up damp, it is still damp in the middle when I take it down in the evening.

OP - I can't imagine KS1 DC, or their teacher, care one tiny little bit.

halcyondays · 22/02/2012 16:19

What an odd thing to worry about. I wouldn't give it a second thought if I saw someone going into their work with damp hair. It won't affect how they do their job and it's not like their rocking up in pyjamas or something.

RitaMorgan · 22/02/2012 16:22

I go to work with damp plaited hair frequently.

WorraLiberty · 22/02/2012 16:23

No-one went to work with wet hair!

TalkinPeace it was one woman talking about one school child turning up for a work experience placement.

dribbleface · 22/02/2012 16:52

gosh i never dry my hair properly, quick blast if it's cold out and off i go. It look's better like that thanthe frizzy mess it would look if i dried it.

neverputasockinatoaster · 22/02/2012 17:12

YANBU at all.

I have waist length, long thick hair. If I wash it in the morning it will take 30 mins to dry properly. I already get up at 6 to leave the house at 7.20 to get to work on time. I refuse to get up at 5.30 so I can dry my hair. It gets combed, brushed and then twisted up and put in one of those 'african butterfly' comb thingys.

I have always had long hair. I have been a teacher for over 20 years and no one has ever noticed my hair is damp. It will still be damp when it is released from the clippy thing when I get home. My fringe dries quickly and the rest just looks sleek. I plait it sometimes too. No one notices then either and it only smells of whatever shampoo and conditioner I have used.

Your SIL is BU.

JEMISMYNAME · 22/02/2012 17:42

I think no matter what job you do it is always unprofessional to go out with wet or damp hair. It just looks like you don't care enough about your own appearance to make an effort.

Pinot · 22/02/2012 17:43

Is your name Jem perchance?

KatieScarlett2833 · 22/02/2012 17:48

My hair looks dry......

,,,but underneath it is wet.

I twist all of my hair except fringey bits up into a french roll and clip. Fringey bits are straightened so my do is sleek and shiny.

When I take it down at night it is all curly and looks fab, even if I do say so myself.

TalkinPeace2 · 22/02/2012 18:24

I am paid for my brain not my looks
which is lucky

springydaffs · 22/02/2012 18:49

already designing a pull-down hairdryer 'hood' for the car. Now that would be a good idea (along with traffic-light mascara application)

ceres · 22/02/2012 19:06

i usually go into work with wet hair. i never dry my hair, it turns into a complete ball of frizz at the sight of a hairdryer. even if i wash it the night before it is still wet - i plait it to go to sleep and, as it is v thick, it is still wet when i take the plait out.

tbh it's never occured to me that anyone would think it odd or unprofessional. it doesn't bother me that people might think this way, i will still go in with wet hair.

FilterCoffee · 22/02/2012 20:05

YANBU. Life's too short to be super-primped :o
