To think DS1 to be encouraged not to see any friends for the duration of Lent is just STUPID!?!

Last time at Beavers, they had to say something they really, REALLY liked, DS said "school" first, but they told him to chose something else, so he said "meeting up with friends".

Other children chose "playing DS" or "eating sweets".

They were then told about Lent and that what they had said they liked they now have to give up for the next 6 weeks! Shock

DH says DS should stick to his word and is not allowed to see any friends during that time. Hmm

Am I the only one who thinks that's a bit weird? After all, seeing friends is not a luxury like eating sweets or playing computer games.

It does occur to me that the initial question at Beavers was a cack-handed opener to a general discussion about Lent.

But it strikes me as an unhelpfully random way of going about it since any fule kno that if you ask a child what they like, you are going to get answers that cover essential things like food and friends!

Although if DS is young (I do't know how old beavers is) mis-reporting is a possibility!

You can "come off" Lent every Sunday I believe. How about DS invites 30 cubs round to yours every Sunday from, oooh, 8am to 6pm and you ask your DH to supervise Grin.

Have a word with the group leader? Did he/she actually know that your DS said "seeing my friends" or was that lost in a clamour of small children shouting "sweets" and "chocolate"?

Your DS did NOT promise to give up seeing friends, he was asked to name something he really liked, and then, after that, he was asked/told to give it up for lent. Big difference, so your DH is being a bit of an arse IMO.

Dd2 has just told me that the head suggested they might like to give up something for lent in assembly today. She says she's giving up school. I've told her she has to write to him first. Grin
