Vair cheeky I know. I need some tri-fold, full colour, glossy leaflets printed for Saturday. I want about 250. I have been quoted £70 from the local council printing department who were recommended by a friend for being cheap.
I have never bought this sort of thing before and I have no idea whether this is competitive. I have tried other printers in Eastbourne for quotes but none of them could be bothered to come back to me; I have another couple of places to go and see but if the £70 is very good value I won't waste my time.

DH thinks it's really expensive compared to the internet but has forgotten that they don't usually include tax & have very expensive carriage to make up for the cheap "shelf price"

Internet you pay shipping too.

CailinDana · 21/02/2012 12:16

It's a bit pricey, as your DH says, but seeing as you need them for Saturday you don't have much space to trawl the internet for a better deal.

Thankyou everyone, it appears from some kind assistance and a bit of googling that I have a massive bargain !! Am going to snatch their arms off ;D

OhDearNigel

I work at a printers.

BECAREFUL OF INTERNET SITES.

There are some reputatable ones out there, but there are also a lot of sharks. We have had several customers switch to what they thought were bargin deals, only to have the printer go bust on them or it to be a scam. We've reported one claiming to be a member of the trade printing association, who they had never heard of.

There are a lot of good deals out there. This is because its sooo competitive right now. Unfortunately this is because so many companies are going out of business.

Just be wary of the quality too.

£70 isn't a bad price. You might get a better deal, but tbh you generally get what you pay for in this business.

AfterDinner · 21/02/2012 12:50

oh and four day turn around... depends on how urgent it is to get them. Price isn't everything.

OhdearNigel · 21/02/2012 12:50

It's the local council in-house print department, AfterDinner. They do some external work but it's very much word-of-mouth. They charge cost + a bit of profit. I'm picking up a sample at 2pm but I expect it to be similar quality to the stuff that my work printing department produces (police) which will be absolutely fine for what I need.

But thankyou for your advice :)

it's interesting you say about the competitiveness, AD. There are lots of printing companies in Eastbourne where I live and I have asked for quotes from several companies for this work. Not one place could be bothered to get back to me, despite contacting one place twice. Now I know that 250 leaflets is not loads but we have ongoing printing, events that we publicise with posters & fliers, several members in the club with their own businesses that also use printing and also the word of mouth recommendations within the 12 clubs in my area that I contact a lot.
So all the companies that couldn't be bothered to quote me for my 250 leaflets will have lost that potential business because in future I will be passing on my contact at the council.
In an area where there is so much available on the internet I was astonished at how little interest there was in my business

Could be Nigel that they weren't so much not interested as just plain inefficient (either way, their loss not yours!)

Or laid off a lot of staff and struggling to keep up with just the every day, day to stuff with fewer people. Or although they say they are printers, many don't actually print in house and outsource everything (many places have sold off presses in the last couple of years) - a 4 day turn around is tight for a lot of people for that reason.

From my point of view glad you decided to go with someone local rather than the internet. Its what printers really need at the moment and given some of the horror stories I've heard, going with someone reputable and reliable makes a huge difference. So thanks!

I don't do quotes, so couldn't be sure earlier but I did manage to check what we would charge this afternoon. Bob on £70. We are a council supplier too.

OhdearNigel · 21/02/2012 21:29

AD - it was about 3 weeks ago when I sent out emails asking for quotes so they would have had plenty of time to do it as the artwork was all ready to go.
