To think they should bring back nit nurses?

First day back after half term yesterday. A nice, lice free half-term I should add. Doing my little girl's hair for school this morn, she is caked in nits and eggs. I couldn't send her into school - how could I when it would then have just spread and I would have been as bad as the mums I moan about who dont appear to give a toss. I had to take my son in anyway so went into talk to my daughter's teacher. I expressed my upset that it has now come to the point (headlice has been going on and on and on since Sept) that I have felt the need to keep her off school. I know its not the teachers fault. She said unfortunately some parents simply dont treat/check and until whole class is treated at same time, problem will continue. So for WITW I have bought yet another treatment which has to be applied over night and washed off in the morning. I have my daughter at home (she is 5) and I am supposed to be at work. I really think they should bring back nit nurses so all children are checked and treated!!

Also with combing it takes soooo long(weeks) you're more likely to be reinfected before you finish the job than it actually working in the first place.

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:14

The ones in the 70s contained banned pesticides.

Combing does work if you do it properly.

valiumredhead · 23/02/2012 14:14

Back in the olden days when fewer OTC remedies were on the market and you had to go to your gp for the treatment iirc the treatments that were prescribed were changed every year so immunity wasn't so much of an issue. I can't remember how I know that

MrsHeffley · 23/02/2012 14:15

Combing being effective is the biggest myth of all.

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:15

It's not a myth that lice can't become immune to Hedrin.

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:16

Why on earth do you think combing being effective is a myth?

MrsHeffley · 23/02/2012 14:16

Seeker I do it properly(see previous posts).

valiumredhead · 23/02/2012 14:16

Hedrin suffocates them - how can you became immune to suffocating?

gordyslovesheep · 23/02/2012 14:17

Seeker how can they become immune to not being able to breath?

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:17

I agree- it wan't me said they can become immune to Hedrin!

Kids are sent home in the states. LOTS of parents use the chemical ones still. Everyone I knew in the states still combed even after the chemical products.

But chemical treatments are not recommended for children with particular health concerns, such as asthma.

The few times DD had nits, she got them from my older sister's children or my younger sister's children. When they actually took the time to treat their children, they used chemical treatments, however, they neither had the brains or made the effort to do it properly (ie combing and/or follow up treatment), so their children had nits and lice regularly. Very aggravating.

There is a HUGE problem with nits/lice in the states, and I remember years ago getting letters home from school that went to everyone in the school that referred to "superlice" that were immune to some chemical treatments and that people needed to make sure they followed up ANY treatment with regular daily combing for at least 2 weeks after treatment. Still remained a problem, as some simply don't follow through.

Why in the world would anyone reallly think the US is any different? people are the same all over - some take care of things, some don't.

MrsHeffley · 23/02/2012 14:18

Because in the real world parents all continuously moan how it.does.not.work. Hence the nationwide infestation.

Only on MN do you hear that the Nitty Gritty comb is infallible.

Until HV,s etc wake up to and acknowledge that the current system and advice isn't working infestation in schools will continue.

gordyslovesheep · 23/02/2012 14:19

haha sorry I missread your post!

valiumredhead · 23/02/2012 14:20

The non-chemical, physical mode of action means that lice cannot become resistant to treatment

from Hedrin site.

I managed to c and p - be impressed!

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:21

I misread yours to Gordy- I thought you were saying they could too!

valiumredhead · 23/02/2012 14:22

I think Derbac is ok for people with asthma iirc.

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:23

Combing works if people actually do it. It takes about 40 minutes to comb one head properly. Buying the Nitty Gritty comb is not enough!

gordyslovesheep · 23/02/2012 14:23

it gets confusing - no wonder the nits are winning!

BeehavingBaby · 23/02/2012 14:30

Is combing meant to remove the eggs? Because it just seems to pass over them, I only have success picking them out.

valiumredhead · 23/02/2012 14:33

You are meant to wipe the comb after every 'stroke' I think. I pick them out, much more satisfying! And I have a dob of vaseline on a finger in case I see a roamer and that slows the little fecker it down so I can remove it.

MrsHeffley · 23/02/2012 14:34

Seeker we do it all 3 kids every other night.Takes hours, divide into sections, masses of conditioner,an hour per child, rinsing and wiping comb after each swipe etc, etc. We've been doing it for weeks.

We still have nits in the house.

valiumredhead · 23/02/2012 14:38

mrs how do you treat you and your partner if you have one's hair? You aren't inadvertently passing them back to the kids, are you?

seeker · 23/02/2012 14:43

Do you do yourself and your partner? Do you use a metal comb?

Sidge · 23/02/2012 14:48

"All parents know about combing and ye holy Nitty Gritty comb"

Ha you reckon?

No they don't. They really don't.

I have worked with parents who hardly know how to feed their children; the lifecycle of the louse and how to remove them doesn't feature at all on their parenting radar.

MrsHeffley · 23/02/2012 14:49

Dp bald,I have short hair.I had nits once as an adult on teaching practice but never since(daily hot hair dryer and products I think).Dp checks me weekly but I don't get it,ever.Believe me I'd know!Grin

Oh and we do the hot spots extra throughly(dd red raw often).Hot spots they like to nest for those who want to know are behind the ears and base of neck.

Seriously I don't think the comb is 100% effective by any means,I think it simply keeps numbers down. You seriously only need to miss one and it all starts again, who can say with a cast iron guarantee they've got every louse and egg out?If you miss one you can have infected 5 kids before you know it.
I also think it just doesn't work for some types of hair.Said dc although rarely without rarely have masses of big ones.We normally have 1 or 2 big mother f*s and several teeny tiny ones.
