To expect people to know that you shouldnt park on a dropped kerb?

I mean it surely forms part of your driving knowledge. We have a long dropped kerb that curves round the end of our drive and over the years have had lots of problems with people parking there and blocking our access.

Got home today to find two women slumped against their car having a fag, i managed to squeeze onto the drive but if dh had been here he wouldnt have got in.
I said excuse me would you mind moving your car forward so youre not on the dropped kerb blocking access. They both glared and said they didnt want to move because they had a baby in the car and were looking at a car in the house opposite. So i said thats fine as long as they werent long because it blocks access and they looked and said sarcastically 'really, i cant see that'.

But really there was about 3 cars worth of space just in front of my house, why not use that? People do it all the time, leave the kerb free but block my access

Grrrrr

Is it actually illegal? I remember reading on here (mn) that parking and blocking a driveway isn't illegal. No idea of the truth, or how it works with a dropped curb tho

Birdsgottafly · 20/02/2012 13:53

Tbh i didn't know until it was brought upon MN Blush.

I would have always avoided blocking a drive or path, even wthout a dropped curb, if possible, though.

Either way their attitude was out of order.

colette · 20/02/2012 13:55

yanbu, if there was space in front why didn't they park there ?

LizzieMo · 20/02/2012 14:28

It is illegal to block access onto a public highway- so if you could not get off the drive then that would apply. Once you are on the public highway you do not have an automatic right to access back onto your driveway, despite having paid for a dropped curb. Bloody annoying I agree!!!

TroublesomeEx · 20/02/2012 14:43

Illegal or not, it's just rude.

There are plenty of things that aren't illegal, that doesn't make them right.

YANBU to be annoyed, it's common courtesy not to block someone in or out of their drive. But a lot of people nowadays are very self absorbed and inconsiderate.

You can be fined and towed if you block someone on a dropped kerb from leaving their driveway. My neighbour had someone towed for this reason, it took hours to do, the truck didn't come until the afternoon but it lost him a day of work. He's a builder and was due to go to work at 6am, the person still hadn't come back at 2pm. I had no sympathy when they came back finally and couldn't find their car, there was no way with two small walls on either side of the driveway that the man could get his car out and that person should have had more sense and consideration. There were plenty of legal pay and display spots free.

worzelswife · 20/02/2012 21:23

YANBU. I use a wheelchair and dropped curbs mean I can get on and off a pavement. It's bloody impossible if someone has blocked it. I do know of people online who will just scratch the car with their chairs, accidentally on purpose, if they come across one that's done this. I would never go that far, but the thought does cross my pissed-off mind.

bringmesunshine2009 · 20/02/2012 21:42

I got towed, that's when I found out. Grrr. The dropped kerb was in front of a wall and e kerb opposite was raised. How is that fair?!

DeWe · 21/02/2012 10:48

I think our dropped curb at the end of the driveway has a notice on it. "Please Park Here"

YANBU! I'm not sure it's illegal, but it's a bloody pain in the backside.

We live on a very busy road and our neighbour always parks past the dropped curb by our drive, which means in takes at least 2 manoeuvres to reverse into our driveway. Can be a bit hairy if you've got some lunatic up your arse at the time. I have asked her on numerous occasions not to do it and eventually last week came to the conclusion that she didn't know what a dropped curb was. I made her put on her shoes and come out into the street so I could enlighten her. Bloody inconsiderate.

Lueji · 21/02/2012 11:05

Call the council and get the cars towed away.

bigbluebus · 21/02/2012 11:50

LOL Lueji. I had to ask a van to move forward and off the drop curb at the end of my drive one day so that I could get in. The van belonged to .... the council!!!! - and there was loads of space a few feet further forward that he could park on.
