to be shocked about this reaction about smoke alarms?

We've just bought MIL a smoke alarm at it turns out she's never had one. Despite there being smokers in the house for many years (thankfully no more), despite having a real fire, and despite all her GC's staying there regularly. Despite, well, everything.

She's agreed to have one as we're insisting. I only found out last week that there wasn't one (I admit I'd never looked and assumed she had one already) otherwise I would have bought her one years ago.

Her reason for never having had one? It's health and safety and it's "crap"!!! She always had windows open, and has air vents, so there's no risk from fire or smoke. They're unecessary. And of course her insurance would pay out if she had a fire even though she has no working detectors. She's lived for xx amount of years without one and is fine, so why get one now? All her children survived there without one too.

DH, who's not usually very forceful with his mum in that he lets her get away with sometimes ridiculous views, told her if he wants us to keep staying there then she has to have the alarm and no arguements (don't ask me why he's suddenly decided this...).

She's no luddite either, she knows alot more about technology and gadgets than me.

But I just can't quite believe that someone can be this ridiculous and darnright stupid over the importance of having a working smoke alarm!!! They cost a tenner and they SAVE LIVES. How can she not see this?!

I dont understand why anyone would take the risk of not having a working fire alarm, there is no denying that they save lives.

YANBU yours kids staying there? Then she needs one.

BertieBotts · 19/02/2012 19:44

Why don't you send round a team of hunky firemen to scare her half to death give her a lecture? Grin

DP's parents won't have one because his dad smokes in the house and it would go off all the time Hmm Not interested in one which is not sensitive to cigarette smoke. The dogs are their smoke alarm, apparently. Confused

redspottedfrog · 19/02/2012 19:55

Bertiedo you stay there?
I think I'd have gone done the fireman route had she not agreed. Obviously I would have been there to observe Grin

Loads of people don't have fire alarms- its not unusual. What are you going to do re kids sleepovers? Inspect first?

Charlotte no of course I'm not! Unfortunately that sounds like the kind of thing that MIL would say to me to make it sound like I'm being overly safely conscious and paranoid. But my children stay at her house all the time, so I am going to make sure that they are as safe as they possibly can be. If people want to take that risk it's up to them, but I will never understand it.

YANBU - i don't get it either why she would object so strongly. Each time you go after the alarm is fiited, check to see it is working correctly - batterruies inserted, press test button.

redspottedfrog · 19/02/2012 20:45

Going I plan to. Although that may sound paranoid I can see her burning some food, setting it off, and then taking the batteries out of it.

After Dad died last year I realised that they had never had a smoke alarm so, taking control of things, I popped down to Argos and bought Mum a smoke/co2 alarm. I put batteries in and put it in the hallway. A while later I realised it wasn't there and found it back in it's box in a cupboard in the bathroom. I told mum off and put it back out. A week later it was back in it's box! For some reason she thinks it is unsightly and complained that it may go off in the middle of the night and scare her!!

I've now put it back out but on a shelf under the phone so she can't see it. She'll hear it all right though!

redspottedfrog · 19/02/2012 20:53

Butkin actually MIL did comment about how she'd never wanted anything attached to the ceiling but I'll give her her dues as she said "but i know you'll be attaching that to the ceiling and it's ok".

DH reckons it's a generational thing...!

YANBU and you don't even have to buy them. Phone the local fire station, not 999 of course, and ask for a fire safety check, they will come and fit as many as you need. The ones they fit are great too, never need the battery changing, and you can't take the battery out either.

microserf · 19/02/2012 21:48

Dsis works in insurance claims management. We always have a working fire and carbon monoxide alarm. Even her good stories end with people watching their homes burning to the ground Sad
