Anyone who resurrects a 2012 thread to say Who wants to buy other peoples rubbish, because that's all it is, a shop selling somebody's crap they don't want is surely trolling

Mishaps · 23/10/2016 16:44

Shocked is a bit of a loaded word! Why shocked?

Are you suggesting this is an age thing? I cannot imagine that there is any truth in that.

Passthecake30 · 23/10/2016 16:44

I can't stand charity shops, leafing through the clothes makes my hands itch (too much washing powder?) and I struggle finding clothes to fit me in normal shops anyway so why would I have success in them?

Shesgotelectricboobs · 23/10/2016 17:00

I rarely go to charity shops to shop. I drop stuff off. But rarely shop.

One of my colleagues constantly moans she has no money. Then moaned the other day about how the tax on cigarettes will go up next year meaning she'll pay £8.63 for a pack of 20. She smokes 25 a day easily. About £70 a week. I pointed this out to her. none of my business I know but I'm sick of her moaning that she's so poor

mirime · 23/10/2016 21:28

I like charity shops. Got some decent clothes from them - FatFace, White Stuff, M&S Indigo and Per Una, Miss Sixty, all in good condition, all under £5, except the Miss Sixty top which was £6.99, but I loved it.

Most I've spent is £15 for a floor length silk dress, in perfect condition and beautiful.

Zombie thread.....

SquinkiesRule · 23/10/2016 21:38

I don't buy clothes from the Charity shop I find they cost too much for what you get. I use Primark and ebay.
Books we use the library and get what we want there.
I do occasionally buy furniture or dishes/cups other things from charity shops.
Nothing to do with age. Or financial status.

VenusRising · 23/10/2016 21:39

I bought a beautiful old coat in a charity shop once, but other than that I don't even go in to them now as they set off my asthma, especially the defustyfying sprays they use.

Rows and rows of griege, out of style clothes all looking waxy somehow and the worst for wear and all fraying and bobbly don't do anything for me at all. Having to take a puff of my inhaler to go in is just such a putoff.

Surprisingly the sell on for these clothes makes much more than the shops. Pity they ship all the clothes to places like Haiti so the poor Haitians can buy them, or not as they're too expensive and unattractive for them too.
The selling on of charity shop items is a bit of a global racket actually.

VenusRising · 23/10/2016 21:41

Arrrgh, the curse of the zombie strikes again!

I thought I recognised some old posters. Ha!

Whathaveilost · 23/10/2016 21:46

I dont care if it is a zobie thread.
Its interesting to hear peoples opinions

pooh2 · 23/10/2016 21:53

Whereabouts does your colleague live? I have found a lot of charity shops in more affluent areas (London, Surrey, Cotswolds) aren't that cheap at all nowadays! Fair play to them and all, the more money they make the better 😄

AxminsterCarpet · 23/10/2016 22:07

ZOMBIE THREAD!!!!!

Whathaveilost · 23/10/2016 22:21

Yes Axminster i believe that had been mentioned several times now!!!

AxminsterCarpet · 23/10/2016 22:23

And still people posted... Hmm

sagethyme · 23/10/2016 22:43

People are posting coz it's been resurrected and taken on a new lease of life!
Charity shops are stupidly over priced in these parts, stuff well worn and often priced more than original sale value🤔

3luckystars · 23/10/2016 23:01

And probably wanked on.

Just kidding!

So?!

MsJamieFraser · 24/10/2016 06:00

I don't like charity shoos either, half the time I can buy brand new in shops.

Natsku · 24/10/2016 06:35

I was shocked at the prices in charity shops when I visited the UK the last few times, they have really gotten quite expensive. I used to work in a charity shop where I live now and our clothes are always cheap - 50cents for a top, 2 euros for trousers, 4-6 euros for dresses and suits. 50 cents for books. Love hunting round charity shops here!

TreehouseTales · 24/10/2016 06:53

It's second hand supermarket stuff around here.

I would truly love to be able to buy second hand Boden etc for my kids. We have m/c tastes on a lowish budget. We don't have friends handing down those kind of clothes but I would happily buy them if you buy per item on eBay you pay postage and I'd much rather a decent charity shop. Jealous of those of you able to find fatface etc!

When I used to live somewhere more wealthy I got so much from the big nct sales. It was incredibly good value, but nothing quite like that here, just table top sales. I'm sure if you have money it's easier to save money sometimes!

mirime · 24/10/2016 13:19

A few bits I got while on holiday in St Ives. One shop there had a huge amount of lovely Per Una clothes, not what I was looking for, I needed jeans as mine had got soaked.

Closer to home, I've had some good finds in Penarth. The lovely silk dress was in Caerphilly, got some wooden railway track and odds and ends in the same shop. I do like to pop in and have a nose, and it's also a cheap way of treating ds.

fiorentina · 24/10/2016 13:31

I think there are ways to save money that don't involve charity shops - library, facebook buy and sell groups, being handed on things from friends etc. Also if you work charity shops can be time consuming to keep going in to see what's available.
I don't have time with a full time job to go in often to find bargains I need.
