To wonder if the National Gallery is the best choice for year 1 and 2children?

Maybe IABU but I don't personally feel it's a great day our for 5-7 year olds. Each year the whole school goes on a trip and this year it's the National Gallery. Nursery and Reception are off to the zoo as the school feel that the national Gallery would be too boring for the younger ones.

I feel it's also a bit boring for year 1! Unless you like looking at art etc, it really isn't much of a fun day out IMO! It is really not DS's type of thing and after speaking to others in the playground, most of us feel our dc would prefer the zoo!

Aibu to think the school hasn't really considered that if a class of 5 year olds (R) would find it boring, maybe a class of (yr1) 5 year olds might too?!

That's good OP - hope DS has a great time :)

Yabu. My DC's have been taken to the national gallery everytime we go to london, we spend 20 mins there when we're heading back to waterloo.

DS first went at 2.9 and he was fine, he loved the horse (stubbs?), rosseaus (sp?) Tiger and the sunflowers. I love having a mooch around with him each time we're in London.

If the Nat Gallery has activites for young children then they'll have a great time.

I have taken children there on school trips. They do fantastic child friendly talks about a selection of paintings. It is a really great trip!

My son went on a school trip to the National Gallery [I think he was a bit older but I can't remember]. He found it incredibly boring. Art galleries aren't everyone's cup of tea.
There again if it is for educational purposes then they don't actually have to enjoy it anyway.

We've taken our mindees, all under 5, to several galleries, including the National. They're very clued up for kids with loads to do.
Why don't you look on their website?

Your son will love it. They do a wonderful magic carpet storytelling session that my 3.5yo loves.

I have been taking ds there since he was a babe in arms.

I've taken mine to art galleries. When they were very little it was only for a short visit (luckily the one near us is free so we did not have to stay long to get VFM) but as they got older they got used to it and they love it now. The earlier the exposure the better IMO. Presumably it is an educational trip- not an end of term treat to Alton Towers type thing??

My kids school takes year 1s every year. They do it and the portrait gallery, and it's a great trip. They love the sunflowers which they have studied before, and normally one more. Then they go to. The portrait gallery and do some dressing up.
Actually Zoo trips aren't as much fun as with the family, as they see less.
