Flush loo again and at same time plunge quickly with loo brush see if that works?

TheOriginalNutcracker · 17/02/2012 13:19

Try a coat hanger

JaneMare · 17/02/2012 13:22

if the water is draining, albeit slowly, get your rubber gloves on and a wire coat hanger and start poking

you can't do any damage and the fact it's draining shows there is a gap in there

liveinazoo · 17/02/2012 13:24

tried poking with coat hanger-no joySad

why when there isnt a loo,do we all want to go?!

Next time there's only a couple of inches of extra water use the loo brush very briskly like a plunger. If that doesn't work then you could try putting a plastic bag over an "old fashioned" mop if you have one - that works like a charm according to the husband of a friend (he's a plumber).

rhondajean · 17/02/2012 13:26

Get a drain clearer and thank your lucky stars that you will get a plumber in 24 hours and you dont own the house and have to try to find one who will deign to come out for such a small problem (I know its not small for you but trust me its hell on earth trying to get one from the yellow pages!!)

And dont give the kids too much juice or anything high fibre Grin

JaneMare · 17/02/2012 13:27

or if you don't have a mop, wrap an old towel in a carrier bag and ram that in and out of the u-bend, but yes, wait until the water has drained down

use a bucket or a neighbours toliet until yours is sorted?

ANTagony · 17/02/2012 13:28

Have you got a sink plunger you could try?

squeakytoy · 17/02/2012 13:30

You need to check the ball valve that is in the toilet cystern.

JaneMare · 17/02/2012 13:32

the ball cock only determines how much water goes into the cistern, squeaky, it doesn't affect the drainage

QuintessentialyHollow · 17/02/2012 13:35

Pay for an emergency plumber to come out?

coraltoes · 17/02/2012 13:37

Can you afford for a non council one to come out? Usually costs £80 for an hour inc call out.

redlac · 17/02/2012 13:38

Once is drained back low, Big bucket of hot water with some washing up liquid (only a wee drop), leave for 30 minutes and flush

or

2 litre bottle of Cola, leave for 30 minutes then flush

lostboysfallin · 17/02/2012 13:38

Go and buy a plunger for a couple of quid.
Don't call a plumber fgs!

MaidenDevon · 17/02/2012 13:39

We had this last Christmas, we thought it was something blocking the u-bend in the loo, but it wasn't.

Go outside to your drain cover (the one that's about 18 inches x 12 inches). Have a look inside, chances are you've got "things" backing up in the cavity there if your toilet is draining slowly. The drain space should be empty, but if there's a ton of loo paper shit have a prod around with a broom handle (make sure you're wearing rubber gloves and something you can throw away over your clothes), then try clearing it with the water from a hose pipe - all the gubbins should run down the sewer pipe ones you've agitated it a bit.

I still have flashbacks, but it saved a few hundred quid on having Dynorod out.

RuleBritannia · 17/02/2012 13:41

Have you any pos left? Potties? Jerries? Chamber pots? You could always empty those outside.

This happened to my loo a couple of months ago. I couldn't do anything with it co called a drain man. Using a wide plunger, the toilet cleared immediately . Now it's happened again and I'm using a plunger and it's working.

OlympicEater · 17/02/2012 13:45

Bio washing powder has enzyme digesters. We often chuck it down the loo after DS has done a mega-dump and it gets blocked. Leave it there to seep down for half an hour then flush again

heliumballoon · 17/02/2012 13:57

I unblocked our loo last month by using a mop as a plunger. Easy peasey.

JaneMare · 18/02/2012 13:01

how did you get on, OP?

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 18/02/2012 17:19

Ours only ever seems to block when DP's just left for work and I'm hungover.

A Sainsbury's bag over the loo brush followed by a kettleful of boiling water usually sorts it.

RuleBritannia · 18/02/2012 17:24

GirlWithaLlamaTattoo

Boiling water after plunging - good idea.

ImperialBlether · 18/02/2012 17:41

I don't suppose you want to pay, but in B&Q they have a rod thing (sorry to use such technical language) which does the trick. It's a thick wire that's several feet long - will always clear anything.

Just found it here. Well worth the money.
