I know I'm quite probably BU, but I might not be. After Sch Club.

I've been weighing this one up in my mind all week.

Two issues really.

The after school cubs are run by school employees but as a private business. Both limited companies.

The Breakfast Club has just extended it's hours to run from 7.15 (previously 7.30) to facilitate several mothers who need the facility. So the price has been put up accordingly. You pay for the session, not the time used. I'm a bit miffed over this - I have no need of those extra 15 mins and it rankles that I have to pay for it because it benefits someone else. (FWIW £4 for 65 mins)

The After School club (different 'company' same emloyees) has just put up it's evening session by a £1 - not a great deal in the scheme of things I know (FWIW its £9 an evening now). I did point out that by and large the users of the club were local government employees and we were all in this together with a pay freeze >sarky< and was told it was to cover the rising rental costs of the facility by the school. All well and good EXCEPT the second lady that co-runs it told me she had struck a 5 year deal with the Head that they pay £300 per term all inclusive (rent, equipment, use of kitchen, heat, light , water etc) and that the Head was looking fora legal loophole to get out of that agreement.

One of the TAs is an employee of the evening business, and she told me they aren't getting a payrise, what with this 'all in it together pay freeze'. Neither have they ever had any employment contract, very poor working conditions in that they get paid MW, no sick pay etc.

The other issue I have is that they never issue receipts for payment - I prefer to work on a cash basis but now issue cheques in the company name - as wildly assumptive I'm sure they probably have two sets of books.

The two co-owners employ 2 TAs and have 40 children an evening, the breakfast club is larger than 40.

One side of me says: Yup, business, need, make your money etc etc it's their market not mine, where as the other side says I really feel as if I'm being held over a barrel because I need that wrap round care and it's not as if they are getting cordon bleu cuisine - infact I doubt their nuggets and fomage frais would pass any healthy eating guide.

I feel quite 'ripped off' and there is no one to complain to - the owners would just say, you need it? Ha! You pay for it or go elsewhere (impossible); the Head would say (rightly), not my company take it up with the owners.

but prices have risen on even the basic things....what do you suggest, they run at a loss or break even? There would be no point in having the business then you would have to find an alternative

halcyondays · 17/02/2012 10:05

How long does the after school club run for? The one at dd's school costs £10 and runs until 6.00, afaik. It is supposed to be run by the school as a service and they say it isn,t profit making.

HappyMummyOfOne · 17/02/2012 11:07

Our club charges by the session too, never bothered me as its my choice not to use the whole session. I dont get receipts either but dont need them, am sure they would issue them if i asked. Some pay cash, others cheques or voucher scheme.

If you think its now too expensive, then look elsewhere and compare prices. If you think as little of it as your post suggests, then surely you would have found alternative care by now.

Foode etc is all going up, ni payments are also increasing.

£2 an hour early morning childcare and possibly £3 in an evening and your feel "ripped off" - thats very little to pay for the care of possibly the most precious thing in your life. If you think its too much, then start after school care youself and see if it can be done for less.

Oh to have an after school club I could send my DS to. Only one locally does not open late enough for me to have got there from work and my boss wouldn't change my hours. Surely everything is getting more expensive and your choice to send you child there. But as HappyMummy says - I think those prices are a bargain. YABVU!!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 17/02/2012 12:54

YABU - they ARE a business and they are in in to make money. Your fees sound perfectly reasonable to me, actually they are quite cheap!

MateyMooo · 17/02/2012 12:54

it very much matters where you live.

i'm a childminder offer 5p per min for breakfast and afterschool club, pay for what you use, and have loads of free spaces.

TrinityRhino · 17/02/2012 13:01

Ive been helping fund raise for our afterschool club

our prices are similar and they dont make much at all

rookiemater · 17/02/2012 13:33

Yes its disappointing that prices have gone up in order to offer a service that you don't need.

But you do however need the basic wraparound care in order to be able to work, so unfortunately it comes under the heading of just one of those things.

I find it ironic that every government makes such a song and dance about getting mothers back to work but fails miserably to put fundamentals in place, such as setting costs for wraparound care, making it mandatory at schools and putting some funding in place for it to happen. Surely the extra tax income would more than cover the cost of these provisions.
