AIBU to think Tesco are having online shopping trouble?

Out of interest I've been reading the review thread, and yesterday I placed an order online for shopping to be delivered today as I have a horrible cold and needed some easy to prepare food for DD. And tissues, lots of tissues as I have run out.
Shopping was due to be delivered this morning, halfway through the slot time I got a call to tell me the van had broken down. This has never happened to me in ca. 5 years of deliveries.

Is it just me, or does it seem to happen quite a lot with Tesco at the moment? Shouldn't it be possible to make alternative arrangements? (Not talking about picking shopping up myself or different delivery day, which they've offered me.)

This is not so much a consumerist rant (although I could really do with my special offer ice cream, 5kg of chips, paracetamol and tissues right now!) as a lighthearted attempt to start a conspiracy theory - what is really going on with all those vans? Alien abduction en route? Double booking? Some Spooks-style attempt to save the nation with Tesco vans?

Whatever it is, it clearly involves double cream as this was mysteriously not to be found anywhere on the website when I did my order...)

I think my problem is that we got used to the very early deliveries from the local store which got changed when they had to use others as ours got refurbished. They've always offered to bring stuff right into the kitchen too.

I got my delievery charge back for lateness.

Then I laid it on thick about how my baby had to eat malt loaf and an egg for her lunch and got £10.

Then when the shopping came they'd given me the wrong kind of pie so I sent a spectacularly rude email asking how to rephrase the words 'no kidney' so that their pickers could understand it, and got another £10.

And yes they are proper shite ATM.

MrsKittyFane · 18/02/2012 07:56

I didn't know that the shopping still came from the local Tesco store in some areas! Ours is now sent from the depot/ massive Tesco warehouse where our green boxes apparently travel along a belt and get filled in a mysterious way. No contact with the store itself at all.

YouCanDoItYesYouCan · 18/02/2012 13:23

Mine still comes from one of the two big local shops.

Nagoo I thought about doing something like that, especially as processing the refund takes a while so I can't afford a big shop until then. Poor DD had to have just beans on toast two days in a row.

They gave me a refund, and evouchers, for another online shop Hmm

But they've never been as shit as they are this last couple of weeks.

I've actually stopped using tesco online because on almost every occasion, once I've finished choosing items and go to 'checkout' most of my order seems to have disappeared!! This happened so frequently that I phoned to complain ( had husband attempt it too to make sure I wasn't doing something myself to cause this!) and wasn't ever given an answer as to why it was happening.
I even started using a different email / login / computer to make sure it wasn't me and again, my husband did this also. Again, after maybe half an hours shopping, my shopping basket would show only one item at checkout!
I have also been given the excuse of the van 'breaking down' once when delivery was 2 hrs overdue!! I live in Ireland so its the only supermarket which offers delivery and getting to the store myself with 2 kids and entertaining them all the way round it, is horrendous!!!
When I've mentioned to the delivery person before, I've been told that other people have been experiencing the same problems.
Just wondered, has anyone else experienced 'vanishing items'?!!

YouCanDoItYesYouCan · 18/02/2012 14:36

I have had items vanish from the basket on the website, but usually only notice this when I expect to find them in the crates and then check the list.

Not had a whole trolley disappear, that's really strange.

Actually, now you come to mention it, they have been quite shit lately. My online order was missing Warbutons bread, family size lasagne and bog standard bag of spuds. Why would they not have these very basic items in stock?
Last week they gave me training pants instead of nappies - DD is nowhere near potty training so they were of no use.

Glittertwins · 18/02/2012 16:17

Sounds like it was picked by someone who doesn't have children. DH reckons he can tell if a parent did our picking if its all there or with sensible substitutions.

But do Ocado price match everything? Or are they like Asda, where the price guarantee only applies to certain things i.e. the ones that dont add up are excluded?!

YouCanDoItYesYouCan · 22/02/2012 08:49

Yes, Ocado matching everything sounds too good to be true...

Nagoo · 22/02/2012 11:36

they match branded stuff IIRC.

Glittertwins · 24/02/2012 11:34

Hurrah, deliveries back from local shop!!

YouCanDoItYesYouCan · 25/02/2012 18:36

Well, my local shop have so far messed up the redelivery (ie it didn't take place), and now the refund - 5 working days later and I still haven't got my money back. Rang them and now it'll take another 3-5 days. Argh! Not sure I'm such a fan of the local shop now! Angry

I'm up north and never had a problem. Find them very good on the whole and quick at refunding an entire box of 12 eggs if the delivery guy notices a slight crack in one.

Asda on the other hand were an absolute nightmare.
