to be pissed off with being offered a council FLAT instead of a HOUSE?

OMFFG · 16/02/2012 10:46

We have 4 DCs, youngest 16 months and they think this is suitable!! The flat is 3 bedrooms and on the 2nd floor of a small tower block and has balconies which I would be pretty worried one of the DCs may fall out of.

This is my worst frigging nightmare. We have been 'homeless' for almost 2 years and the council have housed us in temporary accommodation (private rented) which we have to pay market value for (£875 per month) even though we did not choose it and it's a complete shit hole. We could not leave as we would lose our priority on the council bidding list. We lost our house when DH was made redundant and could not afford to pay £1200+ to privately rent.

Now after all this they have offered us a fucking flat. I am furious because every week until last week, there were only offering 3 bed houses but we would always be 3/4 on the list. Now that a flat was offered, less people have bid on it so we got to the top of the list. I did not even bid on it, the council did. Apparently they can bid on 'our behalf' as we are homeless and if we refuse this flat, we will be taken off the housing list. How the hell will we cope in a flat???

The rent is 'only' £380 a month but a house would only be £20 a month more.

AIBU to tell them to stuff it up their arses?

Bupcakes - if that is true then i would be interested in knowing which council offers this system, it will be the only council i have ever known to do this.

melika · 16/02/2012 12:48

Of course she wouldn't want to be homeless. And I would say the council would be a better landlord to her and her family. They couldn't turf her out at the drop of a hat like private landlords can.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/02/2012 12:48

No the OP was badly worded, like I've said a millionty times.

She hasn't been back anyway. She's probably busy setting her massive trampoline up under her bridge.

melika · 16/02/2012 12:50

Exactly Paranoid, she hasn't won me over either and I don't read Daily Mail. So stuff that up your pipe.

crunchbag · 16/02/2012 12:51

My granddad and nan raised their 9 children in a 3 bedroom flat without a balcony (or bathroom) after losing their farm during the war. My sister raised her 3 in a 2 bedroom flat on the 59th floor, they had a balcony, no trampoline but a sandpit and small playhouse :o

OP it is ok to be disappointed but your attitude at the moment is just wrong.

Kayano · 16/02/2012 12:52

Did they fall out the balcony?

How outrageous Wink

mosschops30 · 16/02/2012 12:52

Sorry but ami missing something?
The OP has 4 kids, had a nice house, dh made redundant and they lost house, he now works and they pay private rent eith no help from HB

So how does the OP count as homeless?

I totally get that people cannot work through illness or other issues and the council house them and im very proud we ave a system that supports those in need.

But from what i can gather from this thread, the OP can just rent like millions of others do?

LilacWaltz · 16/02/2012 12:55

valar it's called autobid. It exists. I have been on it myself just last week!!!

And for those talking about tower blocks, op says it's a small tower block. If like ours, it's 3 storeys

Elfontheedge · 16/02/2012 12:55

I know what the op can do. She can ship off her 2 youngest to a rich childless couple then not only will her family fit comfortably in the 3 bed flat but she will also be suitably punished for having too many children!

LilacWaltz · 16/02/2012 12:56

moss they are in temporary accommodation. That's why.

Maybe council run the rent assist scheme?

molly3478 · 16/02/2012 12:57

I dont think 4 dcs in a 3 bed flat is that outrageous tbh

Haziedoll · 16/02/2012 12:57

I just thought that the OP was feeling a bit down about her misfortune and having a rant like we all do from time to time. I didn't think she came across her as having a massive sense of entitlement.

If you want to meet someone with a massive sense of entitlement I could point you in the direction of my 16 year old relative who is currently trying for a baby with her 20 year old serial burglar/mugger of a boyfriend, neither of them plan on working and are outraged that they haven't already been given a property. The Daily Fail would have a field day if they met them and their friends.

melika · 16/02/2012 12:58

elf we are not punishing her about her kids, it's her Gods given right to a house that annoys the hell out of us.

mosschops30 · 16/02/2012 13:04

But the OP said they pay all their rent so i dont understand the homeless issue?

Elfontheedge · 16/02/2012 13:05

No I get that. The op is being a bit U. It's the attitude of a few posters that she was wrong to have so many children that pissed me off. Everyone should only have one just in case their circumstances change?

HappyMummyOfOne · 16/02/2012 13:07

I dont get that wither mosschops, its a high rent and the OP says they get no benefit assistance which means they must have a high household income. CB and CTC on four children alone would amount to a decent monthly sum without wages. They could have moved from the temporary accomodation months ago rather then holding onto it when somebody else might have been in need.

usualsuspect · 16/02/2012 13:07

FWIW I've just read the Fil thread , not one person told her she shouldn't have had so many children , not one person said beggers can't be choosers

EauDeLaPoisson · 16/02/2012 13:08

No but if you feel you should only have a certain type of housing/number of bedrooms even when circumstances change then maybe its wise to not have so many

LilacWaltz · 16/02/2012 13:08

Yes, because her DH works

You can be homeless AND be employed. ( big issue sellers even are)

tantrumsandballoons · 16/02/2012 13:08

After reading the rest of the posts, I do agree it was probably badly worded, at least I hope so.
I just find it infuriating that there ARE people that think they are entitled to a wonderful big new house with a garden from the council just because they have had a bit of bad luck when there are probably many of us that have been through divorce, redundancy etc and made it through without thinking we were entitled to anything.

Kayano · 16/02/2012 13:08

We were talking about the entitled attitudes that narked! You can't afford
It you can't have it was why that thread was mentioned.

coraltoes · 16/02/2012 13:09

OP you are fucking right! Reject the flat. Get off the waiting list.

So that someone who actually fucking needs it gets a chance. I am so grateful my taxes get spent on this shit. Bloody ungrateful, entitled, selfish attitudes! You are lucky we have a social security system that helps people who fall on hard times. Kicking the hand that helps you is the most stupid move you could ever make. I feel sorry for your kids...having a mother who places trampolines over security of permanent housing.

NorthernWreck · 16/02/2012 13:09

I don't quite get why OP doesn't just rent privately if they can afford it either.
I really can't afford my rent at the mo, and would kill for a council house, but sadly there isn't a snowball's chance in Hell.
I dont know where this myth came from that if you have a kid you get a council house comes from, but it is wildly untrue.
I have no more points than non parent would, it's just that if I did have enough points to bid on anything I would be eligible for a 2 bed rather than a one bed.
In my town tower blocks are only given to people with no kids-just council policy.

TheParan0idAndr0id · 16/02/2012 13:11

I think the money/kids issue was the opinion that they must have had very shaky finances before they had the children, not that they could afford them and then suddenly couldn't.

Not saying I agree (hell I can't afford my children), just explaining for those determined to see only black and white.

LilacWaltz · 16/02/2012 13:11

Eau I agree with you, and I have 5!!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But some foresight would have been better. I was, looking back, a bit naive to think my marriage would survive/our circs would remain etc.

Thank god I have a successful bid on new place as the best thing is I will be able to return to work now as I'm out of the transportless village
