To be shocked at "Protecting Our Children"...

soozlewoozle · 15/02/2012 19:48

...and the social workers' apparent inability to use child seats properly? I was appalled at the number of times they had children and babies in cars and the straps were really loose or the seat was just way too small for the size of child!

I would have thought of all people, child protection officers would get that right!

First off I suspect with the range of ages of children they deal with that sometimes the seat will not be the right size.

Secondly, I think there were many far more shocking things in the three program than proper child seat usage. When the male social worker had to take that toddler away right at that moment under the watchful eye of the convicted pedophile I'm sure he had a lot more on his mind than the straps being tight enough.

RitaMorgan · 15/02/2012 20:45

That was the least shocking thing in that programme, surely?

I didn't see any children in seats that were too small.

BellaVita · 15/02/2012 20:47

I agree wit Captain. More pressing matters a stake.

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 15/02/2012 20:52

I didn't see any children in seats that were too small either. And like the others have said, there were more important things to worry about!

MamaMary · 15/02/2012 20:55

Honestly, you've watched this series and that's what you're shocked about?

I'm Shock at you.

SpringingAllTheWay · 15/02/2012 20:56

YABU! Agree with others, much more shocking things than that in program!

Sirzy · 15/02/2012 20:58

I agree with captain. Of all the issues the show raised car seats was the least worrying.

Oh yes......

SW: oh dear I don't appear to have the correct size car seat, do you mind awfully waiting here while I nip back to the office to get the correct size one?
Pedophile: not at all, will give me a chance to change his nappy, abuse him a bit more, then do a runner and disappear with the child.
SW: ok if you are sure, thanks for your understanding, see you in a bit.

CaptainKirk · 15/02/2012 21:10

Hahahahaha@ScrumpyJ

Cabrinha · 15/02/2012 21:11

I think the OP's getting a hard time! She didn't say it was the most shocking thing.
FWIW, I noticed about car seats too, though only once. When the baby girl was going to her grandmothers, she was in a seat where the straps were really loose.
It's an unnecessary risk, why take it? They should have been tightened.

desperatenotstupid · 15/02/2012 21:30

That social worker on the program last night was visibly shaken, so he made an error with the child seat, so what - he got the child away from a monster, thats all that matters.

microserf · 15/02/2012 21:47

When they took that little boy away from the pedophile, I was so relieved, I'd been so upset to realise that little boy had been there for so long with a monster like that. Thank god someone reported it and they took IMMEDIATE action. Unbelievable that the mum said she recognised the risk but wouldn't do anything. I hope she never gets him back so he can be kept safe.

I won't give you a hard time OP, as I can see your point. I think they probably have to transport a lot of kids at short notice though.

In my department there is no formal training for car seats, you generally ask other workers, we have a range of seats that have to be available for all the workers so you don't leave them in your car etc.

I have found it difficult to get in the mind frame of what seat for who and they are not marked on the back of them. You pickone on your way out. It would have been nice to at least have a rep come in and demonstrate how to fit/use them.

It is about balancing risk and minimising the distress to the child ,though.

sashh · 16/02/2012 03:57

The baby boy's mum wouldn't pack anything for him - the SW had a baby with no nappies, bottle, formula, clothes, teady - I think a short trip in a carr in an emergency was not much of an issue in the scale of things.

Maybe a manufacturer should sponser a SW department and supply a complete range.

TroublesomeEx · 16/02/2012 07:16

OP I'd be more 'appalled' at the way some parents treat their children which necessitates SWs having to remove the children from them in any kind of carseat!

Or are you one of the SW= LA Child Catcher band?

Or maybe you are one of those who also blames the SW/teachers/HCP when a parent kills/seriously damages a child rather than acknowledging that the buck starts and ends with the parents who did it.

porcamiseria · 16/02/2012 09:17

you are fucking joking right? a 14 month has been looked after by a peadophile, a 8 year old cant go home as her house is a hovel with shit in the bath

but yes, lets worry about a loose fit on car seats...............

sweet jesus

ReallyTired · 16/02/2012 09:27

In a dire emergency you are allowed not to bother with a carseat. For example you don't have to use a car seat on a bus or in a taxi.

Stopping a child from being sexually abused is an emergency situation.

LilacWaltz · 16/02/2012 09:34

If they had gone in the police car then no seat would be available.

dearjane · 16/02/2012 09:35

I did notice the straps and then thought exactly what really tired said.

I thought that social worker guy was really lovely too. Really caring and interacted well with the little boy. It was nice seeing all the other social workers being so involved and playing with tbd baby etc when he cane into the office.

I found it really distressing to watch his story but that social worker and the foster mother really brought home that there are good people on the side of these children.

Voidka · 16/02/2012 09:39

Out of the whole programme you are worried about seat belts
Hmm

lavendergirl123 · 16/02/2012 09:40

Get over yourself, OP. Social Workers can't just nip down to Halfords and buy a car seat every time they have to take a child away. My grandson was in the back of the social worker's car sitting on another social worker's lap. Nothing compared to the shit he'd been through in previous months.

porcamiseria · 16/02/2012 09:41

the OP has really shocked and depressed me, that someone could actually say that after seeing a baby being snatched from a paedophile, shame on her
