to wonder why all the contenstants on million pound drop seem to be a bit dim

Im in no way brainy at all and general knowledge is not my strong point, but the constestants that have been on million pound drop seem to be not very bright. I dont usually watch it, but didn't know what else to watch tonight (I watched last night as I was interested how Chris Moyles did). I know its not mastermind or university challenge, but I would have thought the contestants would be a bit more intelligent.

No, they are below average, I'd say.

DCSsunhill · 11/02/2012 22:36

Agree.

Sevenfold · 11/02/2012 22:37

yanbu, but they have to be, they can't out shine the dim hostess

fivegomadindorset · 11/02/2012 22:37

The last couple were exceptional especially on the first qquestion about the shape of sweets Grin

chippy47 · 11/02/2012 22:39

Pretty thick but why choose bright people? Plus the makers could not even spell confectionery correctly so all on the same level. Yanbu.

200k on muhahahaha for Thatcher's first words when she won the leadership of the Tory party. Maybe in private but in her speech. Come on!!

schoolchauffeur · 11/02/2012 23:19

The cynic in me would say they are specially chosen by Channel 4 so that there is very little chance of them ever having to pay out very much money.....

lottiegb · 11/02/2012 23:34

Where would the dramatic tension be if they knew all the answers?

It worries me more that much of the audience, in the studio at least, appear form their reactions to be operating at the same level. Though, I'd rarely get through to the end (with £1m intact, I play 'all one one' when watching Smile) as, while there are easy general knowledge questions to start, there is always something really obscure that demands guesswork and usually questions about celebrities I know nothing about too.

lottiegb · 11/02/2012 23:35

'all on one' - it's too late, can't type.

mycatsaysach · 11/02/2012 23:36

what school chauffeur said

mummymeister · 12/02/2012 00:15

Go on the website and see the application form. they weed out anyone who is bright at this stage. they also ask you to provide a photo - does this allow them to weed out other "undesirables" theres no real mix of ages usually 20 somethings. did used to watch it but when i saw the form felt it was a bit nasty actually - unless you are 20 something with fake tan and impossible heels and not bright then you need not apply. at least with other game shows they make a pretence at picking members of the public at random.

marmiteandjam · 12/02/2012 08:48

ooh ooh, I got through with £1,000,000 on the last one with the twins Grin. I do admit that some people are very thick, I mean who one earth thinks that Love Hearts are rectangular??!!

lottiegb · 12/02/2012 09:41

What does it say about the expectations and reality of the tv audience though? That's the scary part.

For the general knowledge questions I usually know the answer, then have to do something else for five minutes before they get around to 'revealing' it. Then, they throw in something requiring knowledge about slebs, or 'which popular hamburger has lettuce in it' (Big Mac, Whopper etc) and, not reading Hello and having been veggie since 15 I have no idea at all!

Don't you feel the same, without the 20-something glamour, about Millionaire though? The early questions are easy but they still fanny around with irritating tension. I've always wondered what the screening process is there, as there are plenty of people, well read and with good general knowledge, who would walk it, as they can use the lifelines for whatever topic they don't know.

ABigGirlDoneItAndRanAway · 12/02/2012 10:08

Also agree with schoolchaffeur, think how quickly channel 4 would go bust if they actually had to pay big money out to every couple.

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2012 10:13

Andi Peters and Chris Moyles were quite unwatchable. Then that couple who thought 'yo ho ho and a bottle of rum' was from a Dickens novel. Shock

TroublesomeEx · 12/02/2012 10:27

It's irritating, but people being knowledgeable is what Mastermind is for.

Most people at home don't want to see somebody competent who can do a task/answer a question quickly and accurately. We want to watch idiots flapping and getting it wrong because then we can shout at the TV and call them names and that is what is entertaining!

CalamityKate · 12/02/2012 13:43

I suspect some of the "couples" are not real.

I was in the audience of MPD and one couple just didn't ring true. No idea why. And they won quite a lot of money.

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2012 13:45

I have thought that too Calamity. Half of them look like they met backstage don't they?

CalamityKate · 12/02/2012 13:49

Yes. Exactly. They were all lovey-dovey and "normal" with each other when the cameras were rolling, but during ad breaks they didn't say one word to each other. Didn't exchange a single glance while they were having their makeup touched up. Then 2 seconds before filming started again, they gravitated towards each other. Like actors just before a scene.

They just didn't seem real. At all.

TotemPole · 12/02/2012 13:57

I don't think some of the questions are that easy.

Last night there was who is the oldest out of Kate Middleton, Hudson, Winslet and Moss. I could rule out Middleton and Hudson. I guessed Moss, which was correct, but I honestly thought she was a few years older than she really is. There's less than a year between Moss and Winslet's ages.
