To make a christening present?

It's a friend's little girl's christening in a few weeks. We're quite skint at the mo as I'm on the no pay section on mat leave. I'm quite crafty (quite often sell handmade things on eBay etc) and was thinking of making a nice personalised present for the baby. Now...our baby's christening was not so long ago and they bought DC something quite expensive (I'd say they spent a good £40). AIBU to solely give the handcrafted gift? Dare I? Help!

do it.

yanbu at all.
it'll be unique, and personal. :)

I would much rather be given a unique and personalised present for something like a christening than an expensive something everyone has!

Do it.I often knit things for new babies and christenings and they are always very well received ,I think it is nice to know that someone has gone to the trouble of making a gift.

cheekyseamonkey · 11/02/2012 16:54

I'd much prefer a personalised thing. The fact that they spent £40 may put me off a bit too, but you can't afford £40 (from what you say) & you presumably didn't expect them to pay that much?

On balance I'd say lovely, thoughtful, personalised craft would be much better than cheap(ish) generic christening tat.

Go for it.

I agree with the other posts. Something handmade and personal will always be appreciated. It shows you have put time and effort into the gift - much more important than money.

I think it would be lovely to recieve a handmade gift. What about bunting spelling out the babys name?

WMDinthekitchen · 11/02/2012 19:48

Brilliant idea! Your friend's daughter will have a unique present that has had time and skill spent on it rather than ££. 'twould be unreasonable not to!!!!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/02/2012 19:49

I think it's a lovely idea!

My sister was skint when dd was christened she made (laminate A4 and bound with cable ties) a nursery rhyme book - wipe clean ;)

wrote out the nursery rhymes - including some old and new ones she googled and drew some lovley pictures to go with them.

My DD still has it and gets it out most days as its from her auntie shes is now 6

I think that I would prefer a lovingly made, presonal and homemade gift over a shop bought present, even an expensive one, everytime. I'm sure they will love it.

Dontbugmemalone · 11/02/2012 20:04

That sounds lovely. It will be personal to them and probably appreciated more. You sound like a great friend :)

LatteLady · 11/02/2012 20:05

Go for it... it will mean you spent time and energy on it... I think all of us on here would love to be the recipient.
