to expect staff serving food in a supermarket not to touch it with their unwashed hands?

This was in Waitrose today. The assistant came from the shop floor to behind the cake counter. She didn't wash her hands, use gloves or tongs. Just picked up the three scones I asked for and put them in a bag. I refused to buy them from her. AIBU to expect her to at least wash her hands in the sink provided?

this would never happen in Asda because all their bakery goods are wrapped

Just think of all the poor little ethnics working for Fairtrade, pissing up the bushes and sweating in the sun, lactating babies in slings........ or all those nasty french people squeezing their tomatoes and cheese ......

FaithHopeAndKevin · 09/02/2012 20:22

It's called a patisserie in Waitrose and yes there's a sink there for staff to use and she should have. What did she say when you refused to accept the scores?

MoreBeta · 09/02/2012 20:26

Someone did this is a shop I was in and I told the floor supervisor. She was bagging up cookies and buns into prepackaged bags with bare hands.

It really is a bad thing to do.

faeriemoo · 09/02/2012 20:29

Whilst it's not something I would encourage, I don't think I'd be disgusted or assume she was diseased or anything.

I often handle food at home without washing my hands constantly Blush

It's not a nice thing to do. That aside it is against health and safety regs.

mimiof3 · 09/02/2012 20:41

troisgarcons I wash tomatoes when I get them home. Scones would go soggy.

FHAK I don't know. She shouted after me as I stalked off, but I was too cross to stop and listen Blush

At the height of the Swine Flu thing the person behind the deli in Co-Op sneezed onto her hands then proceeded to carry on serving me.

I did take the packet of her in silence and walk off ,then plucked up the courage to go back and explained why I couldn't buy the ham and handed it back. She just a glared at me.

I suppose though you never know what has happened before you arrive so just have to assume they have washed their hands/been clean

BleurghUna · 09/02/2012 20:50

No, i wouldn't have bought them either. It wouldn't have happened in Lidl

mimiof3 · 09/02/2012 21:11

sounds like I should shop in Lidl or Asda instead, but definitely not Co-Op. :bleurgh:

good on you for refusing to buy them.

I cant stand watching the oldies in my local morrisons who pick up the pick your own bread rolls instead of using tongs or even worse rummage among them looking for? goodness knows what.
